Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Hello, BIC Beauties! If the idea of makeup capsules piques your curiosity, or you're interested in seeing what's in the beauty collection or weekly makeup bag of your fellow BIC beauties, jump right on in - with questions, comments or a capsule of your own to share.

To add a fun take on putting together a makeup capsule, I've included theme(s) for the weekly capsule - some weeks, I have enough products in my stash (eek!) to make a whole capsule based on the prompt; other weeks, I have just one or two items that fit neatly within theme.

Whether you find yourself in the same place or somewhere in between, jump right on it and share your weekly makeup capsule. Check out the FAQ section below ⤵️ for more info on this challenge.

With the American Music Awards airing on October 6, thought it might be a fun way to jazz up the prompts with a capsule consisting of one or more products from beauty brands founded or owned by musicians. See spoiler for non-exhaustive list.

FAQs: [Updated 4.28.2024]

Spoiler

What is a capsule makeup collection?

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.

Why have a capsule makeup collection?

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I can and might @itsfi .  Some of the resistance is the lack of sheer will to go through everything, pick out, edit myself and then put everything back 🤣.

And funny you mention ice cream.  Unrelated to my eye, I went and made good on my resolution to have a cone.  Now, I have to go back and get one for my eye.

R/t liner - Will do

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Ummmm, but what flavor ice cream 🍨 did you get @danielledanielle? Details. I need ice cream details. 😆

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

It was a soft serve cold brew ❄️ @itsfi

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@danielledanielle Booo to an eye inflammation.  But dang, I'm impressed every time I see how much you squeeze into a make up bag! I think I'm going to especially love seeing what everyone uses this week for inspiration purposes!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie🤣, I didn't think I keep going with the fits, but I feel compelled. I remember seeing @CynthieLu stuff a bag, and after that I was like, let's gooooooo

I think my Fenty Bag + Black owned Beauty week was the best out of the fits.  I got everything in there and didn't break the zipper 🙌🏽

R/t picks - Me, too.  It'll probably enable me 🤣 Who doesn't love a multi use item?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Still more Week 23: The Love Is Love Makeup Capsule

23 - Love Is Love - about face.jpg

This capsule centered on the about Face Perfecting Foundation. I'm with @missjeanie when it comes to my thoughts on the foundation - formulation and performance are good; the packaging takes some extra care - my sink and the glass to my shower door have experienced some splatter from it, even when I'm trying to be super careful with the applicator out of the bottle (and the narrow bottle neck).

Spoiler
🖌  I'm still in the early stages of trying a few of the new Wayne Goss White Gold brushes but in true Wayne Goss form, they're lovely - really very lovely @danielledanielle. I'll go into more detail once I've used them a couple more times, but initial impressions are good. The #5 brush is small for a kabuki foundation brush but it works just as quickly and effectively as a more traditional sized kabuki. The smaller head allows me to really get into harder to reach / blend areas like around the corners of my nose. 👍 The  #1 large bronzer brush is large indeed, which I initially thought might mean more work for me, but it had the opposite effect - quick and easy application and blending for all over bronzing of my mug. I haven't tried using it for a more defined bronzer look and that's on my to do, but for my usual "get-your-face-on-asap-gurl" mentality in the morning, it works beautifully.

😍  MAKEUP BY MARIO SoftSculpt Transforming Skin Enhancer®  has been a fantastic product to have in my overall makeup collection. I would never have picked this up if it were not part of a very generous gratis package a couple of summers ago. I received the shade Medium which I still have and reach for in the latter part of the summer. This Light-Medium shade works well for me in that spring-to-summer transition when my fair-to-light complected skin tone needs some warmth to perk itself up.

☀️  Speaking of a little warmth, TOM FORD Soleil Glow Bronzer 02 Terra is a verrrry light bronzer; very light. It gets more use in the winter months, when I remember I have it in my collection and in the spring/early summer transition, it makes for a fine setting powder with a light hand for creamy bronzers or eyeshadow, or a light dusting all over.

🌻  OLEHENRIKSEN Banana Bright Face Primer 1 oz/ 30 mL is great for brightening the complexion and priming skin for makeup.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi, so what you're saying is I need the  bronzer brush because my beloved Sonia G Jumbo Bronzer takes forever to dry, so this is a good stand in... That's what I read, right ?? 🤣🤣

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

That is IG ZAKT LEE what I'm saying @danielledanielle!! 😂 Excellent job at reading between the lines and understanding itsfi - speak. 😝

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi … you’re talking me into the Tom Ford Bronzer….

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

hahaha, I don't know if I'm supposed to respond with "You're welcome!" or "I'm sorry." @missjeanie 🤣 I don't think Emily Post covered this in her rules on etiquette. 🤔 I somehow think my audience will be a factor to be considered, so ...

to you, missjeanie, "you're welcome!! Happy to help!" 🛍

to your wallet,  "Oooopsy. I'm sorry; will *try* not to let it happen again? 😬"

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi lol you've got it right!  I know most people these days are all about pigment pigment pigment, but I like a subtleness in my bronzers. Not that I need another bronzer... sale season... once sale season starts up!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie, pigments are pretty, but 9.875 out of 10 times (with a +/- 0.125 margin of error 😉😅), I'm a "my <<insert part of face, as applicable>> but better" gal. 😁 What others may find boring, I consider my 'go to' - I'm good with being boring. 💗

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi I hear you loud and clear!  When someone complains a palette is lacking pigment, it peaks my interest.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I swear I have been doing a few capsules here and there since I started falling off my posts.... but alas... a fresh start!  I like the Love is Love theme and was tempted to do something quite colourful to celebrate the start of Pride month, however work and personal commitments this week were better off a bit more conservative.  I started to build a capsule then got distracted and it turns out I just meshed in some other products that were a part of project pan and/or just convenient to grab.

The products from this week and going into the weekend...

Spoiler
For my base/eyes...
-About Face Foundation is one that I quite like.  The way it wears away is really lovely for me.  I'm quite interested to check out the concealers (I think I saw they have them?). Big warning on the doe foot though, it's too large for the scraper in the neck of the bottle.  One needs to be careful with the packaging!
- ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr Mini On 'Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof Setting Spray 1 oz/ 46 mL This was included in a Sephoria box I think?  I only tried it at the end of last summer and was impressed.  This is a setting spray I could see myself re-purchasing this summer.  It very much does help with longevity of makeup.
- MAKEUP BY MARIO SoftSculpt Transforming Skin Enhancer®  This was a gift from @TeamBIC that I was initially a bit hesitant on, I just don't wear bronzer often.  But it's soooo easy to blend in that it looks very natural even if I'm not great with application.  I still only wear bronzer in the warmer months, but I'm quite happy with this one and look forward to testing out other items from the brand.
-Marc Jacobs Liquid Lip Creme in Truth or Bare.  Discontinued.  I'm not a liquid lip gal, never really was.  This ... is a great blush though.  I brush some on the back of my hand and use a beauty blender to blend.  LOVELY!  I'm tempted to try some of my other liquid lips like this.
-About Face Eyeshadow On Pointe.  I've been using this as a shadow primer this week.  It really does blend nicely and barely creases at all.  I'm looking forward to seeing other shades in person from the line to pick up one or two.
- TOM FORD Eye Color Quad Eyeshadow Palette 30 Insolent Rose This is a favourite quad of mine.  I like rosey shades a lot.  I was torn between this one and the MJ listed below and found both worked well together.
- Marc Jacobs eye-conic Fantascene.  I have a few MJ's palettes... I need to use them.  I honestly don't think I've touched them in at least 5 years.  This is a bit more peachy than the TF above but they worked really well together.

Spoiler
My lip products for the week
- TOM FORD Patent Finish Lip Color in Exotica This is a nice stain in a gorgeous magenta shade that unfortunately fades a bit weird.  It seems to settle a bit into my lip lines and fades that way?  Not bad if you put a balm over it though.
- TOM FORD Lumière Lip Lumière No real colour with this, but it's a lovely lip balm.  I shouldn't like such an expensive lip balm so much.  I might need more and this capsule may have reminded me of this.
- Marc Jacobs Sheer Gel Lipstick New Nudes in Role Play.  This is such a great nude shade for me.  And I don't generally love nudes, or bullet lipsticks these days.  Was interesting wearing a bullet lip again that I wasn't blotting down significantly into a stain.
- MAC Viva Glam Miley Cyrus.  This is a VIBRANT coral/pink.  I *think* MAC was founded by two LGBTQ+ gents, but I'm not sure.  I felt like a Viva Glam product got a bye this round though for the amount of good the line has done.  It was also fun to do a bright lip this week!  Summer is for brights in my mind, and I'm ready for summer!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

That Marc Jacobs eye palette.  Another shoulda woulda.  I love seeing it, and paired with About Face (which I have yet to dip my toe in, but yes to).

@missjeanieThere's sophistication to this edit 🤌🏽🤌🏽

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@danielledanielle I reached for the Marc Jacobs palette everyday... had to force myself to use the Tom Ford one day just so that I could say I used it.  This is one I'd consider panning at some point if I thought I could handle a larger palette!

I'm still getting into the About Face line... so far... interest peaked.  I'm looking forward to taking a bigger peak at the line next time I'm in Ulta!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Ahhhh, the Marc Jacobs beauties in this capsule are making me nostalgic @missjeanie! That's one of his OG eyeshadow palette! I regret (well, somewhat) passing on a few of the eyeshadow palettes of his that I had. Yes, his New Nudes lip collection was great! I think I also found a good nude lipstick that I liked back in the day.

"I shouldn't like such an expensive lip balm so much." Hahaha! You know, missjeanie, that sentiment just speaks to me. 1000%

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi I was tempted to throw in more Marc Jacobs! I still miss his beauty line. I know they weren’t all hits for everyone, but I miss so many products! I might still have a mascara unopened….

Every time I’ve pulled this TF lip balm out this week I’m more and more convinced that I need more!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie, I loved the aesthetic of the MJ line - the packaging was so sleek and he did have a lot of palettes that I really thought were beautiful, even if they weren't necessarily colors I'd reach for often.

I feel like I have one (or more) of those Tom Ford lip clicky pens somewhere in my stash. 🤔 There was a stretch way back when where Tom Ford beauty products somehow seemed to find their way to my home, with some frequency, too! 😉

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Nothing beats a fresh start @missjeanie  and I agree, this is a great prompt and theme to jump into. I like the color scheme that I'm seeing unfold in your capsule. I'm picking up a lovely romantic rose kind of feel. 🌷

And wow, yes the Mac lip is a bold looking one. This is going to be a fun and beautiful color for you to wear. Brights for summer you say? I love that.  🤩

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@CynthieLu  I love a look in any shades of pink. Then it’s my lipstick I’m willing to branch out more with.  I still after all these years go back to Mac for some fun lips!
