Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Hey BIC beauties! One of my goals this year is to try to put together a makeup capsule with a handful (okay, maybe a large handful, in my case) of products that will work for me for an every day look and special occasions. Given my current collection, I won't need to be starting from scratch. 😂 So, I'm treating this capsule makeup collection challenge like a shop my stash and declutter adventure all in one. Would love for you to join me if and when you can.

If this is something that interests you or just piques your curiosity, please feel free to use this thread to document and challenge yourself to

(1) use what you have / shop your stash; and

(2) determine which products in your collection to keep, which to declutter, and which to try again another day. All with the goal of curating a set of makeup products that will help you achieve a signature look - and maybe a few additional products for other looks in your daily life, including looks for special occasions or events.

Every week, I will post a group of makeup products I plan to choose from (i.e., shopping my stash) for my looks during the week. The themes / prompts are guides and if you have a certain interpretation or approach you want to take with it, go for it! Not every product has to fit squarely within the theme; it can be just one item.

WEEK 29 (July 15 - 21) - The Sticks and (Gem)Stones Makeup Capsule and/or The Pops of Colour: Summer Edition Makeup Capsule - Have some stick makeup in your stash that could use a little love? Time to bring 'em out include one or more stick product in a capsule (thanks @danielledanielle missjeanie). Stick makeup not your thing? All good; we're bringing back our previous Pops Of Colour theme (thank you @missjeanie), for a second option for this week's capsule - pick one or more products that add a summery pop of color to your look. Feeling adventurous - curate a capsule championing both themes.

Upcoming Makeup Capsule Themes: [Updated 7.16.2024] Take a sneak peek at the themes to come.

WEEK 30 (July 22 - 28) - The BIC Inspired Summer Edition Makeup Capsule and/or The Pan It! Makeup Capsule - Okay, BIC Beauties, here we go - we have a new capsule theme as well as a well loved one - assemble a capsule of one or more beauties inspired or enabled by the fabulous members of our Sephora Beauty Insider Community? Or, put together a look with one or more items from your project pan. Or, meld the two prompts together for a capsule of both BIC inspired and pan it! products!
WEEK 31 (July 29 - August 4) - The New, Old, or "Is It Time For This To Go?" Makeup Capsule - Did you pick up some new (or new-to-you) beauties this month that you want to play with (or keeping playing with)? Are there one or more tried-and-true products, or sleeping beauties in your collection that you want or need to put to use? Or, are there products in your stash that need to be put up on the chopping block (such an awesome theme, @cianni)? Here's your chance to curate a capsule with one or more products from one or any combination of these categories.

WEEK 32 (August 5 - 11) - The Take 2 / Do Over Makeup Capsule and/or The "Sleeping Beauties" Makeup Capsule - Was there a makeup capsule theme you missed out on taking part in? Or, perhaps one you want to do over, either because you had a lot of fun with it or you wanted to try a different approach to it? Here's your chance. Or, is there a product or products that's been sleeping in your stash or that you haven't had a chance to get to? Grab that sleeping beauty or beauties and incorporate it in your capsule.
WEEK 33 (August 12 - 18) - The Day-to-Night (or Date Night): Summer Edition Makeup Capsule and/or The "Outside My Comfort Zone" Makeup Capsule - Summer will be coming to an end soon. Did you have a go-to day-to-night (or Date Night) look this summer? Give us a sneak peak into that capsule. Or, are you feeling adventurous? Shop your stash for those beauties that you don't naturally gravitate towards and create a makeup capsule with one or more products that are outside your usual go-to look or comfort zone. (Sneak Peek: I'm going with the outside my comfort zone theme, with false lashes and red lips - eek! 😱)
WEEK 34 (August 19 - 25) - The Samples Makeup Capsule and/or The Newness Makeup Capsule - Have one (or 10? 😂) makeup samples you've been meaning to try out? Here's your chance! Curate a capsule with one or more sample-sized (foils, deluxe samples, promo gwp's, etc.) makeup products. If you're using foils, think about sharing your thoughts on the Foil Challenge thread. Or, did you pick up some fun new beauties that you've been wanting to play with? Put together a makeup look with one or more of the new additions to your makeup collection.
WEEK 35 (August 26 - September 1) - The August 2024 Throw Down!, Throwback, and/or Throw Out! Makeup Capsule - In a nod to @danielledanielle's always amazing alliteration acumen 😉, @cianni's brilliant idea for a chopping block capsule, @missjeanie's throwback suggestion, and @ather's inspired battle theme, here are your choices for capsule prompts for the last week of August 2024 -
*  Throw Down! Are there a couple (or more) similar products that you want to pit against each other? Toss 'em in with your choice of makeup this week to duke it out. 🥊

Throwback - okay, this can be taken a few ways and it's all up to what you're up for this week. "Throwback" can mean (A) taking your capsule look (in whole or part) to days gone by - love the bright bold makeup of the 80s? Go for it. 90s brown lip liner your thing? Add it to your capsule. Blue eyeshadow and frosty lips from the aughts (2000s) more your speed? You do you. Or, maybe "throwback" for you means (B) going back to a previous theme from this challenge, whether all the way back to January or just last week. Here's another chance for a Take 2 / Do Over capsule.

Throw Out! - Is there a product or two or three or ... that you're on the fence about. Put 'em on the chopping block this week to see whether their performance saves them from elimination or shows them the door.

FAQs: [Updated 4.28.2024]

What is a capsule makeup collection?

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.

Why have a capsule makeup collection?

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

All are invited to join in this adventure, whenever and however is most effective for you. I'm excited to see what results from this experiment.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

If the Chanel is from a while back, I'm pretty sure I have it too @blackkitty2014😂 I've been a little more ... strategic (?), practical maybe, when it comes to the Chanel releases over the last 12-18 months. It helps that there's been quite a few cheek products which are usually easier for me to pass on and since I keep reminding myself that I'm still working on ND Biba 4.5 years later, it makes it a smidge easier to pass on the eyeshadow quads. Foundations and lips though, especially from Chanel, are more tempting for me.

If you carry the Chanel Le Blanc into next week's capsule, you've hit the repurposed (and possibly multi-tasker) mark - skincare / illuminating product as makeup primer. DONE! All you need is one product in your capsule to fit the theme. If you want to do more, go for it. But just the one is fine. Cream blush for lips and cheeks. Bronzer for bronzer and eyeshadow. Concealer for foundation.

Ahhhh, I used to wash my hair everyday ... and with Pantene too! Using those gratis beauties can be a slippery slope - that's how I started down the fancy hair care path 😂 My hair has no complaints or regrets. My wallet though? Entirely different story. ha!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Oh good call @itsfi . I will carry that Le Blanc over and will think of something else for next week too 😘

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Week-In-Review - Week 22: The May 2024 "On The Chopping Block" Makeup Capsule
It was a busy week on the personal and work fronts, with mixed results, but a very good week for shopping my stash and working through products as far as capsules go.
No new items to add to the Top Shelf but the week's battles set up really helped me move products out of my stash and, for the most part, into spaces where they will be better loved and put to use. So, even when I lose (an item), I win! 😊 Here are the hits & misses from Week 22 -
Battle of the Clear Lip Glosses & Oils:
22 - Battle - Lip Gloss + Oils.jpg
The clear (lol) takeaway from this battle is that sparkle wins! 😆 The two lip glosses containing sparkle, one silver (Dominque Cosmetics) and the other gold (Tower 28 Beauty x Kung Fu Panda Magic), will stay in my collection. The other two will be re-homed.
Batte of the Cream Cheekies
22 - Battle - Cream Blush.jpg
Turns out that the criteria for this group as far as what stays and what goes is how well the product wears on the cheeks and the lips. Nudestix Bohemian Rose, a gorgeous cheek shade, didn't work well on my lips.
Battle of Eyeshadow Sticks:
22 - Battle - Eyeshadow Sticks.jpg
The OG, Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Waterproof Cream Eyeshadow Stick remains atop this field. The IT Cosmetics counterpart, while displaying good staying power, just isn't for me - the shade is too cool leaning and more stone hued than taupe. It also looked a bit patchy. The about face shadow stick is one I'm undecided about - it may perform better with an eye primer; I plan to give that a try next week
Battle of the Skin Tints
22 - Battle - Skin Tints.jpg
Finally, the main event, the showdown, that many of us are interested in ... the battle of the skin tints << dun, dun, duuuun >> @ather @CynthieLu
U Beauty The Super Tinted Hydrator is my fave of the three here. It doesn't beat out my 🐐 skin tint, Tower 28 Beauty SunnyDays, but of the ones here, I liked it the most - soft, dewy, lightly hydrated skin. I do use a concealer with this one as my skin is still a work in progress, but this is a beauty and one I'm looking forward to using more this summer.
Week 22 FavesWeek 22 Faves
Week 22 DecluttersWeek 22 Declutters
May Declutters: With the 4 products decluttered from Week 22, we had a total of 21 products moved out of my stash for the month of May! 🙌🙌 And what a beautiful array of 21 products!
5.2024 Declutters 1.jpg
5.2024 Declutters 2.jpg
Week 22 "Extra" Capsule - For weeks when I have a larger makeup capsule to work with, my plan is to curate (using mostly products from that larger capsule) a small set of makeup items - for a quick-and-easy look or for my weekend wear. Yep, always trying to make it easier to get my face on and out the door. 😅 I joke about that but I have appreciated having a capsule with options to choose from right there in one makeup bag (or sometimes, in a medium sized Sephora shopping bag) and also having a smaller group of products already curated from within that capsule group! @caitbird, here's what my sub-capsule looked like for the week - it's been my weekend-plus makeup capsule. I wore this Friday and Saturday, and will use this group of beauties for my look today (Sunday).
22 - Battles - Subcapsule.jpg
Added the Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench® Hyaluronic Hydrating Moisturizer SPF 45 1.7 oz/ 50 mL after chatting with some of the BIC beauties here about it.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi, dare I say devastatingly delightful declutter!  That's a lot and you have the wherewithal to actually take a pic before you say goodbye.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

*squee @danielledanielle - "devastatingly delightful declutter!" My word nerd self is gleefully giddy at that! 😍

lol, the pic is for accountability. So I have a visual reminder of what I passed on and what I will hopefully not pick up again without good reason (e.g., reformulation that has been noted as addressing whatever the reason was that I decluttered it).

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi  I was at the edge of my seat waiting for the main event and it kept me hanging till the end. In true main event fashion! I am so surprised that U Beauty won the battle. But not the 🐐 I mean it is hard to beat Tower 28 Beauty SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen Foundation 30 PCH  it’s a true 🐐

one thing I was surprised by was that Nudestix didn’t preform well. I feel like they might have been one of the first brands that started the multi stick. So I am disappointed it didn’t preform well.

And yay for the sparkles winning. I think a clear with sparkles is always the best option. It just adds that extra bit!! Yay for this showdown of makeup!! It was even better than the March Madness makeup!!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@ather, I won't say it will never happen, but it would take a lot, and I mean, A LOT!!! for Tower 28 Beauty SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen Foundation to lose its 🐐 GOAT status. The K18 dry shampoo did it to the amika Perk Up dry shampoo and that actually had me stunned, so I won't say never, but it's unlikely SunnyDays will be bested as my go to skin tint. ❤️

A few notes about the skin tint battle, which I probaby should have included in the original post:

  • Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Soothing Serum Skin Tint Foundation with Peptides + Ceramides  is lovely, but T28 SunnyDays gives me more coverage and glow. I feel like of the three skin tints duking it out this week, the DM is most similar consistency-wise to the T28 but since I have the T28, I could do without the DM. I've worked my way through a good bit of it and I do like it, so I won't declutter it and instead, will plan to use it up. Where does the Live Tinted skin tint fit? If I were to rank it, it would fall between the Tower 28 and the Danessa Myricks.

  • Kosas BB Burst Tinted Moisturizer Gel Cream with Copper Peptides separates on certain parts of my face throughout the day - it's odd. I get separation on the high points of my cheek bone, on my left cheek; as well around certain parts of my mouth and jawline. That actually made it an easy decision to pass on this one. I really wanted to like it.

  • U Beauty The Super Tinted Hydrator was the darkhorse. I thought it would be too sheer and too glowy (possibly greasy looking) for my liking, but I think my skin type at the moment is right in the sweet spot for this product. It is more sheer than the T28 SunnyDays but also more dewy (but without being greasy). It's different enough from T28 SunnyDays (and the lighter coverage and no SPF may come in handy) that I feel like it has a place in my collection without feeling too similar to the T28.

@CynthieLu @missjeanie

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi  Ooooo now I’m more interested in the Live Tinted!! Interesting the Kosas separated. Especially where it did. I’m glad it was easy to pass. It was on my list to try but I’ll strike it out now!! Better to stick to what works!! The DM sounds good too.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@ather, the undertone in the DM leans more yellow whereas the undertone in the Live Tinted, at least the color I chose, is more neutral which suits me better.

Yeah, Kosas is really hit or miss for me. I like their tinted oil (that looks like it’s no longer available), their lip oils and their bronzers (but I’ve only tried the original formula, not the new version).

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Week 22 The May 2024 "On The Chopping Block" Makeup Capsule

Mixing it up a bit with my capsule for the last week of May. It's a spin on the "On The Chopping Block" theme; however, not all of these items are at risk of being chopped! Some of these beauties, in fact, are Top Shelf or worthy of a place on the Top Shelf.  Many, though, sit in that undecided camp where it's a liked (or in some instances, a "very well liked") product but not necessarily a loved one or one that standouts amongst other similar products in my stash.
22 - May chopping block.jpg
I've chosen 3-5 products for each of the following categories - complexion, eyes, cheeks and lips. My goal is to declutter at least one product from each group. A Battle Capsule, so to speak 😉 or a duel between products. Something I think I mean have mentioned earlier in the year, and that was brought back to my after chatting with a good friend over the board game "Battleship" 🚢
In addition to trying to declutter a few items from this bunch, I'm also hoping to put together a separate mini capsule from this set of beauties, and put that mini capsule to use over the weekend - it'll be a sub-capsule, so to speak, from the larger ensemble and was something that came to mind as I was chatting with our magnificent @caitbird earlier this month.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi  Oooo I am so down for the battle of the tints. Who will win and reign over them all and which one will be left in the dust. You have a great line up!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Thank you @ather! I've had a duel with foundations or lip products in mind for a few months but never really got anywhere with it, and that just morphed into a battle across different categories. All inspired by talking about a game of Battleship! 😊 Surprisingly, it was pretty easy to assemble a few beauties to battle it out with one another. lol. I'm pretty sure that may mean that I have too many products. 🙄 In any event, this is shaping up to be a fun week. I love the color commentary "battle of the tints. Who will win and reign over them all and which one will be left in the dust." It evokes dazzling broadcast journalism feels a la the Olympics or high stakes sporting events. Love it! 💗

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi  I maybe watching to much of the hockey playoffs. It might be rubbing off on me!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Ahhh, the Stanley Cup playoffs! How amazing was that Game 4 for the Oilers @ather???!!!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi  yes!! It was actually pretty exciting since last round they played against Vancouver! I’m not much for watching sports. But it’s been fun! Tim Hortons even had oiler donuts 🍩 Felix and I had one and he said the Oilers taste good! 😊

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@ather, there must just be a lot of energy around all of it, especially with a local team in the playoffs. Awwww, your little guy always makes me smile! 😊

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

That's the battle I'm most curious to see the results of to @itsfi @ather . It could totally be a broadcast in beauty journalism. Who will prevail! Aaahhh the suspense! 😃

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@CynthieLu  I agree. I’m at the end of my seat biting my nails! @itsfi

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@ather, oh my goodness, no biting your nails. We working on growing them out!!! 🤣 I have a long-ish day today but if I'm not too tired when I get home from work, I'll post results of the the battle of the skin tints. If not tonight, then over the weekend.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi  Yes! Still working on growing them out!!! And not real nail biting more pretend biting!! My nails are getting longer! And stronger!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I didn’t think you were really biting them, @ather. Yaaay to stronger and longer nails; you’ve worked hard for them. 👊🏼
