Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Hey BIC beauties! One of my goals this year is to try to put together a makeup capsule with a handful (okay, maybe a large handful, in my case) of products that will work for me for an every day look and special occasions. Given my current collection, I won't need to be starting from scratch. 😂 So, I'm treating this capsule makeup collection challenge like a shop my stash and declutter adventure all in one. Would love for you to join me if and when you can.

If this is something that interests you or just piques your curiosity, please feel free to use this thread to document and challenge yourself to

(1) use what you have / shop your stash; and

(2) determine which products in your collection to keep, which to declutter, and which to try again another day. All with the goal of curating a set of makeup products that will help you achieve a signature look - and maybe a few additional products for other looks in your daily life, including looks for special occasions or events.

Every week, I will post a group of makeup products I plan to choose from (i.e., shopping my stash) for my looks during the week. The themes / prompts are guides and if you have a certain interpretation or approach you want to take with it, go for it! Not every product has to fit squarely within the theme; it can be just one item.

Week 22 (May 27 - June 2) - The May 2024 "On Top", "On The Chopping Block" and/or "On Repeat" Makeup Capsule

It's that time again, BIC Beauties! Curate a capsule with (a) your standout or favorite products from the month; (b) products you're trying to decide whether to keep or declutter; (c) products that repeatedly find their way inio your makeup looks; (d) all of the above... OR, treat the "On Repeat" theme as an opportunity for a "Do Over" or "Take 2" of a previous makeup capsule, from earlier in the month or any of the previous themes to date (see below for complete list).

Upcoming Makeup Capsule Themes: [Updated 5.27.2024] Take a sneak peek at the themes to come.

Week 23 (June 3 - 9) - The Love Is Love Makeup Capsule
Let's curate a capsule of one or more products from LGBTQ+ founded/owned makeup brands to honor Pride Month. Check out the spoiler below ⬇️ for a non-exhaustive list of LGBTQ+ founded/owned beauty brands focused primarily on makeup / color cosmetics.
Week 24 (June 10 - 16) - The Repurposed Makeup Capsule and/or The Multitasking Makeup Capsule
Do you have a product(s) that you've repurposed for a different use or ones that perform more than one function (lip and cheek, eyeshadow and bronzer, etc.? Let's pull them out of your stash and put together a capsule with one or more of those beauties. Shout out to our marvelous @missjeanie  for the repurposed theme.
Week 25 (June 17 - 23) - The "Welcome, Summer!" Makeup Capsule and/or The "Good Stuff" Makeup Capsule  A couple of fun themes this week. Summer is officially here (well, on Thursday)! Let's kick things off with an ode to the sunny, warm, bright & breezy days to come! Or, use this week to focus on the "good stuff" in your collection, be it one or more products you looooove or the "good stuff" that only comes out every now and again (or, maybe for some of us, for the first time this week).
Week 26 (June 24 - 30) - The June 2024 "On Top", "On the Chopping Block" and/or "On Repeat" Makeup Capsule - Last week of the month, BIC! You know what that means. We have options! Let's shine a spotlight on one or more products from the capsules this month that's (a) one of the best products of the week (on top); or (b) something you're thinking about tossing or decluttering from your stash (on the chopping block); or (c) made a recurring appearance in your capsule all month (on repeat); or (d) all or some combination of the above. Or, curate a capsule that's been done before - a "Take 2" or "Do Over" - with or without any adjustments as you like.

FAQs: [Updated 4.28.2024]

What is a capsule makeup collection?

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.

Why have a capsule makeup collection?

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?

No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.

All are invited to join in this adventure, whenever and however is most effective for you. I'm excited to see what results from this experiment.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie I think I like the ND a little more as well. I think because it's so hydrating it looks more brightening and plumping, almost. The Kulfi is more of a natural finish. It's the Hourglass Illume Sheer Color Trio . I've had it for years. I still really like it but I'm kind of over it for now. So many great cream formulas have come out since this did that I find myself reaching for other products more. Idk why HG never did more shades of this or revamped it.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@makeitup305 I thought it was the HG Cream Trio.  I've seen a few people use it here and there and they were always complimentary but it never got much love.  I suspect because like you say... just the one colour way.  And yes... so many wonderful creams these days.  I love it!  Do you have a current favourite formula for cream blush?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Thank you for this great round @makeitup305 😀 I love seeing what everyone is using. I want to know a bit more on your HG palette. Is that a face palette?

I'm excited to see what products you swap in for April.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@CynthieLu it's the Hourglass Illume Sheer Color Trio . It came out years ago. I like it but I have other stuff I'm more excited to use these days. I swapped in a bunch of other cream products- Nudestix blushes, some Kevin Aucoin cream sticks I picked up over the holidays, and a Tarte cream bronzer. I also grabbed some other concealers and foundations. I tend to set aside products I want to incorporate more and then pick through my collection to supplement what I got. I'm also working through my lipstick purgatory box from my declutter from this month. I'm keepig an Excel sheet of all the eyeshadow palettes I'm using this year so those get rotated almost daily.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Ohhhh, those Tom Ford blush & highlighter duos were great @makeitup305

I love the idea of products like the I’m Meme highlighter and contour duo stick but my experience with them, regardless of brand, is that one is great and the other off. Was there a brand that allowed you to mix and match? I feel like there was a while back, but at the same time, that could just be wishful thinking on my part!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Idk maybe? I know Dibs beauty has one with a bronzer and a blush one either side with a ton of shades, but I haven't tried it. It looks great, though! The problem with highlighter is that it has a pearl not really a shimmer so when it starts to fade it's just specks of glitter. Not too noticeable unless you look for it but not idea.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

PSA - Hey BIC!

Next week (April 1 - 7), we have The "Do Over" or "Take 2" Makeup Capsule but I realized we've gone through a lot of capsules over the last 3 months, so I've included a quick summary of our previous 13+ capsule themes / prompts in the spoiler below, as well as a link to the below list in the original post.

Past Makeup Capsule Collection Challenge Themes:

10The International Woman Owned / Founded Beauty Brand Makeup Capsule
11 - The "One Brand" or "All The Brands" Makeup Capsule - this was so much fun (and sobering) to see how which brand(s) I had in my collection that I could use to put together a full face; a fabulous theme @Mellmars1185
12 - The "Springing Forward" Makeup Capsule and/or The Pops of Colour Makeup Capsule - How much fun was it add some pop of color to our looks this week?! This one was all thanks to @missjeanie
13 -  The Fast & Furious / Quick & Easy Makeup Capsule and/or The March 2024 "On Top" or "On The Chopping Block" Makeup Capsule - I love a look that is quick and easy to put together and this was a super fun way to go about it, and eye opening too. Loved being able to have a collab across different threads - @sister13 @danielle If this is your capsule choice to repeat, do be sure to cross-post to Re: Makeup Challenge of the Week 2021/2022/2023 and Sephora Six - Fast & Furious Edition

It'll be fun to see what theme everyone chooses to re-do. Or, perhaps, you'll mix-and-match a couple or more themes for your makeup capsule this week?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi ive been a silent participant for the last few weeks because things are crazy at home, but loving this chance to try one that ive missed!! The fast and furious one is right up my alley this week, as we are travelling and i packed in a hurry…. Not only will the looks be fast and furious, but the selection was too!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@cianni, always so good to hear from you! How was baby's first Easter?!! Safe and happy travels to you. Will keep an eye out to see what you packed and hear how it performed.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

RECAP - Week 13 (March 25 - 31) - The Fast & Furious / Quick & Easy Makeup Capsule13 - Fast & Furious - Recap.jpg

With the Easter holiday, I'm here with an early check-in for the last week of March. There was one adjustment I made to my capsule this week, to account for allergies and acne - ack! 😣 I subbed out the Yves Saint Laurent Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara Noir as my eyes were irritated and watery. In its place came the Armani Beauty Power Fabric + Longwear Matte Concealer, a tried-and-true OG, to mask an unsightly zit that popped up. I have been very disappointed by this turn of events as I was doing pretty well when it came to controlling my breakouts. Alas, such is life and such is the nature of my skin in spring.

This was a fun capsule week - had a great time doing a collab with the fabulous @danielledanielle and @sister13 ❣️ No new additions to the Top Shelf and no declutters this week. Will be back after the Easter holiday to post about March declutters as well as to share my Week 14 makeup capsule, which should have something for everyone - The "Do Over" or "Take 2" Makeup Capsule. Have a favorite cspsule theme from the last 13 weeks? Or did you miss out on taking part in one? Here's your chance for a "do over"; - whether to repeat a past capsule or to re-do it, with modifcations based on lessons learned, or to add new products, or to make changes due to seasonal shifts.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Sorry to hear you had to battle some allergies @itsfi

I hope it was nothing too serious. 🩵 Glad to hear you had fun with your capsule this week, it felt like the most adventurous I think, trying to use less, complete a face in record time. 😉 It was a fun experience. (thank you!)

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@CynthieLu, it was a challenge on top of a challenge! Great to hear you had fun!

Allergies were not so bad, more that they took me by surprise. It was windy and rained here and that isn't typically when my allergies strike, but the wind picked up the pollen from other parts and blew in on over so there were many days when my eyes were watery. Fortunately, that was it and I didn't experience itchy or swollen eyes.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I thought this posted yesterday!

Yesterday’s 4.5 minute face - no cheating, even I was impressed with myself! Some of the stuff was still out from the day before, but also new items, including a random Marc Jacobs nude lipstick, one of very few nudes that works on me. I was rushing for a zoom call at 11, haha, cutting it a little close. The pic I of my face is from after the call though.

Some of these items are definitely in my "5-minute capsule" i.e. the Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Eaze Drop Stick Blur + Smooth Tint Stick Foundation because I don't need a concealer, and the Benefit Cosmetics BADgal BANG! Volumizing Mascara Intense Pitch Black – 0.30 oz/ 8.5 g because it goes on fast and one coat will do. The Gucci Gucci Crayon Définition Sourcils Eyebrow Pencil is nice because it's not too soft, but still pigmented and it's easy to remember which side is the pencil and which side is the spoolie.

The tarte Timeless Smoothing Primer 0.5 oz/ 14.2 g is the only thing that fills the large pores on my nose and stays put throughout the day. I realize I didn't use the LYS bronzer stick on my face in the morning (I added it later) so ignore that in the pic below. Anyway, this is X-posted to Sephora Six - Fast & Furious Edition  and Re: Makeup Challenge of the Week 2021/2022/2023 with a pic of my face included! 🙂

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I love your makeup tray @sister13 it's makes for beautiful product shots. 🤩🤩  Congratulations, that's amazing time!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Thank you @CynthieLu and @itsfi,! I’m trying to remember to put items I use on the tray and photograph them when I’m done getting ready (or later that night) and then PUT THEM AWAY! Otherwise, I end up with photos from the week of multiple looks and I forget what I used (and liked), AND I have products everywhere!

Also, this vintage tray came from my uncle’s house, when he moved out to enter assisted living, it was like a time capsule in there. We assume this was his aunt’s, our Great Aunt Louise’s, whom we never met, and it’s likely from the 1960s or before.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I just love the tray of treats @sister13 😍 And I spy a few throwbacks that put a smile on my face. That Marc Jacobs lipstick!!! And, of course the macarons. Errr, I mean, the Too Faced blushes. 💗

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Those MJ nudes were so great, and such a fabulous formula! @itsfi

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I changed my mind a few times making this capsule.

The theme I wanted to try was:

The Fast & Furious / Quick & Easy Makeup Capsule

But getting the right products for me to use in a quick routine was challenging. What I chose, I ended up switching up a bit.. a few times. 😅

My first group was all of the below product pic,  but with the PATRICK TA Major Dimension III Matte Eyeshadow Palette instead of DM's, I just never took a picture of the group, as well as a different Fenty Stain.

The Look:

I took just under 16 minutes for this. My overall thoughts were speed is tricky. 😂

My second try was this group:

The look:

I chose the DM Danessa Myricks Beauty Lightwork V: I Am Palette For Eyes And Face because I can apply it easily with my fingers, and the Hourglass face palette has *everything* setting powder, bronzer, highlighter etc.. but using all of those isn't always fast. But I'm happy too say I got this all done in under 11 minutes.  Speed is still tricky, I don't think I enjoy going fast but I did like the idea of challenging myself. 🙌 I was happy I saved a few minutes. Not trying to do my eyeliner definitely saved me some time.

But I ended up switching to: my final grouping

I need an SPF and finding one that behaves with my base is hard. Dior and Shiseido get along really well together.

I got this done in under 11 and that's with eyeliner.

@itsfi @danielledanielle @sister13 Thank you all for this one 🙏💖 that was a fun experience. 💖🙏

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

So pretty! Great job! @CynthieLu

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@CynthieLu, you put together some great capsules this week. Super impressed with your eyeliner look. If I were to attempt to do as clean and tight a line as you've done, it would take so much more than 11 minutes to do a full look. In fact, I'd probably still be working on the eyeliner. 😅 You always make the Fenty lipstains look so amazing! I wonder if she'll expand the range with the warmer weather approaching. 🤔 It's been fabulous to see everyone's fast & furious choices - thrilled to have had the opp to collab with @sister13 and @danielledanielle 💖
