Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

It's 2024, BIC! A new year, with new adventures in store! One of the new adventures I will be embarking on this year is something I've been wanting to do for years actually - to create a capsule makeup collection that will suit me, my needs, preferences, lifestyle, and budget. My goal is to come up with a collection of tried-and-true makeup products by the end of the year that will work for me and I'd love, love, loooove for you to join me. Jump on in if you are interested - in creating your own makeup capsule or if one of the themes pique your interest.

tl;dr: [Edited 1.2.2024 to add] Using this thread to document and challenge myself to (1) use what I have / shop my stash; (2) determing which products in my collection to keep, which to declutter, and which to try again another day. All with the goal of curating a set of makeup products that will help me achieve a signature look (and maybe a few additional products for other looks in my daily life, including looks for special occasions or events).

To add some fun to going through what I have (which can seem like a herculean task), I'll challenge myself to pull together products to meet the theme each week, and then at the end of the month, curate a set of makeup from the best (or most loved products) from each of my weekly efforts. All in the hopes that by the end of the 52 weeks, I will have assembled a more streamlined makeup collecion that works for me.

Capsule Makeup Photo 2.jpeg

Every week, I will post a group of makeup products I plan to choose from (i.e., shopping my stash) for my looks during the week. I plan to post a photo of the products and tag those that may be available at Sephora. To keep things interesting and add a bit of fun to this experiment, I will try to have most of the products used fall within the weekly prompts/themes (see below), but, even though I have a fairly robust amount of makeup, there will be weeks when there may only be a few items that will fall squarely within that particular week's theme. All that to say, if you don't have a product that fits wholly within the prompt, don't let that keep you from participating.

CURRENT WEEKLY THEMES [Updated 2.26.2024]:

The Best of February 2024 Makeup Capsule and/or
The "On The Chopping Block" Makeup Capsule (thank you @cianni for this marvelous idea)

  2. The "On The Chopping Block" Makeup Capsule - Have some makeup items you're not sure whether to keep or declutter? This week's prompt was inspired by @sister13 who included this theme in the Makeup Looks Challenge and @Mellmars1185. Thank you, ladies! What a great idea for a capsule!
March 18 - 24
The "Springing Forward" Makeup Capsule and/or
The Pops of Colour Makeup Capsule (thank you @missjeanie for this fun and fabulous prompt!) - Spring is in the air! Create a makeup capsule with one or more product(s) that (a) give you springtime feels; (b) add a pop of colour to your everyday "go to" look; (c) pops because it's all about ALL the colors; or (d) any combination of the (a), (b), and (c).
March 25 - 31
The March 2024 "On Top" or "On The Chopping Block" Makeup Capsule - Let's close out the month with a capsule made up of the makeup products that (a) were the best of the beauties you used this month; (b) are items you're trying to decide whether to keep or declutter; or (c) a combination of both.

What is a capsule makeup collection?

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.

Why have a capsule makeup collection?

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why Weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube), Makeup Bag Monday, where she would rotate her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. She would post every Monday the products she selected for the upcoming week and provide detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews but will at least try to include a recap of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

Other Challenges On the Forums Worth a Look:

These are just a few of the many, MANY challenges on the forums. I've included links to ones that are active and will try to update accordingly. Some I participate in regularly, others I post to every so often, and others still I visit to learn about makeup products, tips and tricks, or just to see what's going on.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Yep @Mellmars1185! That’s in the works. I love the idea! There’s a week for “one brand or all the brands” - I’ll see about moving it up the schedule too and will tag you. I was inspired by @sister13 who did something along those lines last year (or the year before last?) for the makeup challenge thread -

Having done these capsules for over a month, it’s been interesting to see that I can do a full face (or nearly a full face) with certain brands. That may be a theme that gets repeated during the year!

Edited to add - mellmars1185, it’ll be part of either March or April’s capsule prompts. March themes will be posted by the end of this week.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi  Wow! A month done! Looks like you made good use of the capsule challenge!!’ And it’s nice to see some declutters!

1. I feel like the challenge is well rounded. I like the different themes thus far they are really pushing me out of my regular rotation! I don’t know if there is anything I think could be improved! I think it’s perfect!

2. Weekly is perfect for me. The ones I did participate in was nice to get everything ready Sunday night for Monday! I’m not sure if changing it to more or less frequently would be beneficial at this point. I need a week to really gauge how something works for me!

3. I am loving this so far! I’ve loved the challenge this far and I can’t wait to see what’s next!!!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Awww, thank you for the feedback @ather. I agree it’s been good to make use of the products I have and I’ve been very happy to see that others have been able to do the same and enjoying it. I also don’t mind having all my makeup at the ready in the mornings - it makes it easier, faster and also more fun to get ready. 👍🏼

It’ll be interesting to see how it goes not to have the Tower 28 as the one I automatically reach for. I’ll have it handy if I’m not feeling like the foundation in my capsule for the week but it does move me out of my comfort zone a bit and gets me using the other makeup in my stash more which is definitely a good thing, both for using what I have and for assessing whether it makes sense to have it in my collection.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi While you may have talked me out of the Tower 28 liners... I think you and @ather may have talked me into the Merit complexion stick.  I see the other base products your loving and love them as well, so basically I have proof it's gonna be great.

As for your questions...

  1. Likes / Dislikes about the challenge - is there anything you'd like to see more of? What is/are area(s) for improvement?  I really enjoy the themes.  I find they're forcing me to look through my stash and see what can fit.  I'm using this challenge to get me to go through my products more and use a wider range of them.  Not necessarily to declutter, but just to get more use of a wider range of items.  I'm sure there are going to be weeks where I have larger capsules (don't just this coming week, but I'm feeling extra tonight as I choose items) and weeks where I won't have items that fit, or I'm away and just don't have access to my stash, but I'm loving it so far.
  2. How's the frequency for changing up the themes / prompts? Is a week a good cadence? Is it too short?  I really like the weekly change.  I find Sunday nights a time where I'm usually home and I try to do more of a full 'self care sunday' evening routine so I'm able to incorporate a capsule as part of my getting ready for the week to come.  I think depending on the theme a two week slot would be fine as well.  I mostly see the size of my stash and how many things I'd like to incorporate this year... and know I need a more changes lol.
  3. Any other thoughts you'd like to share?  I'm loving this so far!  Great idea Fi! I'm getting to use some products that I've forgotten about and I'm getting some more in depth reviews on products that others are using as well.  All around a winner challenge in my books.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie, the Merit foundation stick has mostly pros for me. The one “con” and it may just be the stick I have is that the bullet or actual stick has fallen out a few times on opening. It’s managed to not fall on the ground but I’ve been more careful when removing the top since the first time it happened. Has that happened to you @@ather

I also have the Westman Atelier stick and I like it as well. They provide different coverages for me so that at the moment, I feel like having both in my collection is fine. The Merit gives me light to light-medium coverage and the Westman Atelier is medium coverage that I can build up to a more full coverage look on days when my skin is really good.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi I think I was mixing up the Merit and the WA, my skin isn't a fan of coconut oil and one of them had it as an ingredient.  I'll do a quick perusal before purchase to make sure the one I'm snagging is the one without. Good to know about the stick falling out though, I'll keep an eye out.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie, it looks like the Westman Atelier stick is one with coconut oil specifically listed in its ingredients list.*

It doesn't look like there's coconut oil in the Merit ingredients list but I didn't check if all of the listed ingredients are derivatives of coconut oil.

* Screenshots of the ingredient lists are from the product page for each product, as it appears on the Sephora website.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi I knew it was one of them.  The Sephora I was at this weekend was out of the entire paler end of shades of the Merit.  It's okay... I'll wait and save money and get it during the spring sale!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie, I have a feeling there's gonna be a lot of purchases from the BIC during the spring sale. 😅

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

The Capsule Challenge is helping me add to my collection... not declutter it @itsfi  lol

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

hahahaha @missjeanie. Oopsies.

Oops gif.gif

I mean, you never know, there could be declutters in your future. We're still early in the year.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Oh no @itsfi   Mine hasn’t fallen out. But I think I remember reading reviews that said that. I feel like they changed the stick since tho. Maybe that fixed that issue @missjeanie

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@ather, ahhh, I probably have one of the older ones. I just have to be careful when I open it.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Great recap! I found your feedback on the Tower 28 liner very helpful as I have been eyeing it. I have been loving thr brand so far but had not tried their liners. The fact that it could be on the chopping block helped me decide if I actually want to buy it. I like your top shelf idea also. I eventually only want to have top shelf items as my whole collection.

To answer your questions...

Likes / Dislikes about the challenge - is there anything you'd like to see more of? What is/are area(s) for improvement? I like that I am getting more use out of products that have not been used for a while. It is helping me give products a chance before destashing. It is helping me explore my stash and helping curve my spending.

How's the frequency for changing up the themes / prompts? Is a week a good cadence? Is it too short? I think a week is good. Maybe one of the months we can try doing a 2 week capsule for fun and see how it goes?

Any other thoughts you'd like to share? I have been enjoying this challenge a lot. I am also learning a lot from everyone participating!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@Mellmars1185 @itsfi I've had the Tower 28 liners in and out of my carts so many times too.  I love the brand and I don't have a crazy stash of lip liners, but that said... I think I'm in the same boast at Mellmars, I'll wait until I see something that really speaks to me in lieu of getting this one just because I like the brand.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie @Mellmars1185 I think the Tower 28 liner is nice but it’s not one that is necessarily a must have, for me at least. It can be used for eyes and cheeks as well and I can see it being great for someone who would be able to use it for something in addition to a lip liner.

I think you’ve hit on something with liking the brand. It’s definitely something I want to like because I do like the brand and a really enjoy a few items from their collection. And, it’s not something I don’t like, but there are other similar items I like more. It did get me thinking about what, if any, brands I like all their products or practically all of them. There’s only a small few that came to mind for me, and it wasn’t every product offered but most.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Yes @Mellmars1185, that's my goal too - to have all Top Shelf products in my makeup collection! The Tower 28 liner is nice; it's just that I have other liners that work better for me. We shall see.

Thank you so much for your feedback; it's very helpful. Working on my capsule and using the products each week has curbed my spending too, more so than I thought it would. I'm less inclined to just buy something and I haven't been struck by FOMO to the point where I cave. If I do, I've been going through my capsule and my stash to see what I have that I've not opened. Then I'll either add it to the week's capsule as an extra or I'll set it aside with a note to use it for the next capsule where I can fit it in.

I am loving your idea of having a 2-week capsule sometime in the year. Made a note of it; I'm going to give that some thought to see when would be a good time to slot that in.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

I’m taking a slightly different approach to this weeks theme - instead of my monthly faves (because I know they’re tried and true), this weeks capsule is going to be a collection of capsule challenge products I tried this month that I’m on the fence about. I want another week to play around with them and see if I like them enough to keep in a regular rotation.

because of my take on the challenge, my capsule is not going to be super cohesive and necessarily hit every category to create a full face. I’ll rotate some known faves to fill in any gaps, and summarize what additional products made it to the final capsule ☺️

here’s some of the products on the chopping block this week!

  • MAC Cosmetics Macstack Mascara - already know I don’t love this, but it’s getting old. After this week, it’s time for her to go.
  • Charlotte Tilbury Magic Water Cream Refillable Gel Moisturizer with Niacinamide
  • Covergirl TruBlend Super Stunner Highlighter
  • Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer (Liquid) - I did like this, but it was my first time using it, so I want to keep experimenting
  • Pacifica Dream Big Brushed Up Brow Gel
  • Bite Beauty Yaysayer Lip Gloss in Rum Baba - not something I need to test but definitely something I need to work through and finish!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Great approach @cianni !  Now to see what ends up making the final cut!!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie ive told myself that i have to be ruthless with these declutters - if I’m still on the fence after all these attempts and chances, it’s gotta go!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@cianni I'm hoping everyone in this thread will be rubbing off on me... I need to be better at getting rid of products I'm not fond of!
