Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

It's 2024, BIC! A new year, with new adventures in store! One of the new adventures I will be embarking on this year is something I've been wanting to do for years actually - to create a capsule makeup collection that will suit me, my needs, preferences, lifestyle, and budget. My goal is to come up with a collection of tried-and-true makeup products by the end of the year that will work for me and I'd love, love, loooove for you to join me. Jump on in if you are interested - in creating your own makeup capsule or if one of the themes pique your interest.

tl;dr: [Edited 1.2.2024 to add] Using this thread to document and challenge myself to (1) use what I have / shop my stash; (2) determing which products in my collection to keep, which to declutter, and which to try again another day. All with the goal of curating a set of makeup products that will help me achieve a signature look (and maybe a few additional products for other looks in my daily life, including looks for special occasions or events).

To add some fun to going through what I have (which can seem like a herculean task), I'll challenge myself to pull together products to meet the theme each week, and then at the end of the month, curate a set of makeup from the best (or most loved products) from each of my weekly efforts. All in the hopes that by the end of the 52 weeks, I will have assembled a more streamlined makeup collecion that works for me.

Capsule Makeup Photo 2.jpeg

Every week, I will post a group of makeup products I plan to choose from (i.e., shopping my stash) for my looks during the week. I plan to post a photo of the products and tag those that may be available at Sephora. To keep things interesting and add a bit of fun to this experiment, I will try to have most of the products used fall within the weekly prompts/themes (see below), but, even though I have a fairly robust amount of makeup, there will be weeks when there may only be a few items that will fall squarely within that particular week's theme. All that to say, if you don't have a product that fits wholly within the prompt, don't let that keep you from participating.

CURRENT WEEKLY THEMES [Updated 2.4.2024]:

March 2024 Makeup Capsule Schedule: [Updated: 2.16.2024]

Capsule Theme
February 26 - March 3
The Best of February 2024 Makeup Capsule and/or
The "On The Chopping Block" Makeup Capsule (thank you @cianni for this marvelous idea)
Three (3) options this week for your makeup capsule -
  1. The Best of February 2024 Makeup Capsule - What makeup product(s) from the past 3 weeks stood out to you? Put together a makeup capsule with your favorite makeup products used this month.
  2. The "On The Chopping Block" Makeup Capsule - Have some makeup items you're not sure whether to keep or declutter? Bring them together for this week's capsule and let us know at the end of the week which of your beauties on the chopping block are staying another day, and which, if any, you've decided will no longer be part of your collection.
  3. The Hybrid Makeup Capsule - Mix it up and curate a capsule with your makeup favorites from this month, along with some beauty products that you've been on the fence about.
March 4 - 10
The International Woman Owned / Founded Beauty Brand Makeup Capsule - In honor of International Women's Day (March 8), curate capsule with 2 or more makeup products from a woman owned / founded (or co-owned / founded) brand from around the world. [NOTE: A partial list of brands that fit within this prompt will be posted by or before the end of February].
March 11 - 17
The "One Brand or All The Brands" Makeup Capsule - Browse your stash and put together a capsule for a full look with either makeup products from (a) one brand or (b) all different brands.
This week's prompt was inspired by @sister13 who included this theme in the Makeup Looks Challenge and @Mellmars1185. Thank you, ladies! What a great idea for a capsule!
March 18 - 24
The "Springing Forward" Makeup Capsule and/or
The Pops of Colour Makeup Capsule (thank you @missjeanie for this fun and fabulous prompt!) - Spring is in the air! Create a makeup capsule with one or more product(s) that (a) give you springtime feels; (b) add a pop of colour to your everyday "go to" look; (c) pops because it's all about ALL the colors; or (d) any combination of the (a), (b), and (c).
March 25 - 31
The March 2024 "On Top" or "On The Chopping Block" Makeup Capsule - Let's close out the month with a capsule made up of the makeup products that (a) were the best of the beauties you used this month; (b) are items you're trying to decide whether to keep or declutter; or (c) a combination of both.

What is a capsule makeup collection?

A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. ๐Ÿคฃ It would most definitely not.

Why have a capsule makeup collection?

Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions.  Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.

Why Weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube), Makeup Bag Monday, where she would rotate her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. She would post every Monday the products she selected for the upcoming week and provide detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews but will at least try to include a recap of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me.  If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.

Other Challenges On the Forums Worth a Look:

These are just a few of the many, MANY challenges on the forums. I've included links to ones that are active and will try to update accordingly. Some I participate in regularly, others I post to every so often, and others still I visit to learn about makeup products, tips and tricks, or just to see what's going on.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi thatโ€™s so funny you mention that - ive gone down the same rabbit hole while looking for products that hit the challenge! While i found that I didnโ€™t have as much makeup brand variety, i did learn that i have quite a few hair and skincare products!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

That's awesome @cianni! Love these types of rabbit holes. If you have just one or two products that fit the theme, definitely jump on in and supplement with other products. And, if there's not a product in your stash that fits the theme, jump in anyways with a capsule of your own or redo one you've done before (with the same or different products) - that will be another future capsule theme!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi that's really cool. I don't think I can do a full face either but I need to look through my collection and see what I have. PMG is definitely the winner in that category. I know I have foundation, concealer, powder, blush, highlighter, lipstick, lip gloss, and eyeshadow. I just finished my sample of the Danessa Myricks primer, which I did enjoy. No brows or bronzer, I think.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@makeitup305, it was eye opening and slightly convicting to see how many products I havenโ€™t even opened. ๐Ÿ˜” Iโ€™m looking forward to using this weekโ€™s products - there are so many good ones in this capsule.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Final thoughts from January Week 5!

Not much to say here other than I loved like 95% of these products and was happy to wear them through the week.  I had a variety of looks with the shadows and lip products here and could have used this particular capsule without any issue for much longer.

-Both the Tower 28 and the Benefit mascaras have been moved to empties.  The Tower 28 was used last on the last day of January and then hit my January empties.  The Benefit was used until the end of the week and then went in with February's.  Both were lovely, but I'm not sure if they're 'oh my gawd, I love them and I won't ever buy anything else' kind of loves.  They were both to the point where they were very very dry and had to be worked to get product on my lashes so I'm happy to have used them up.

- The Stila lip liner is the only other product that I really have anything to note on.  It's okay, and I like the formula, I've used several of this formula in the past and enjoyed them, but this shade is a bit lighter than my preference.  I'll happily use it up and move on to others.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

What a fabulous week you had with these products @missjeanie. Wow, loving. 95% of the products in your capsule? Thatโ€™s phenomenal โ™ฅ๏ธ What would you say was your most favorite product to use?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi Never ask a mother who her favourite child is and never ask a BICer to choose just one favourite lip product!!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Hey there BIC beauties! We've gone through a month of capsules. I'll get to my recap shortly (and I'll try to keep it short and sweet). Before then, wanted to check in with folks - whether you participated for a week or all 5 this first month, whether you followed along on the boards or on your own at home, or whether you just stopped by for a peek, thank you for stopping by. I hope there was something here that you found helpful. Speaking of things you may have found helpful, wondering if folks might share their thoughts on the following:

  1. Likes / Dislikes about the challenge - is there anything you'd like to see more of? What is/are area(s) for improvement?
  2. How's the frequency for changing up the themes / prompts? Is a week a good cadence? Is it too short?
  3. Any other thoughts you'd like to share?

And, now, here it is:

RECAP: Week 5 - Best of January Makeup Capsule

Week 5 - Base.jpg

Base - All 3 are becoming regulars in my weekly capsules. I can see that being an issue to getting to other base products so my plan going forward is to move each of these into what I'm currently referring to as my "Top Shelf" products. If these fit squarely into a weekly prompt and there's nothing else in my stash that would work, I'll bring these back into the fold as a leading player but for the time being, they'll play a supporting role during the week. I may still reach for them but priority in terms of use will go to other items so that I can truly be working through my collection and giving a fair shake to other makeup products.

Week 5 - Cheeks.jpg

Cheeks - this challenge has helped me to wear my cheek products more, a lot more. I don't have many cheek products so these will go back into my stash to be incorporated into different capsules as the year goes by. I'm thinking the Saie highlighter may receive a "Top Shelf" designation at some point.

Week 5 - Eyes.jpg

Eyes - Lancome Monsieur Big Waterproof gets "Top Shelf" designation; everything else goes back into the stash. Nudestix Hey, Honey and Glossier Boy Brow my be involved in a duel with another similar product sometime in the future.

Week 5 - Lips.jpg

Lips - For the most part, these lippies were all good and will be going back into the collection for use another week. I'm undecided on the Tower 28 Work of Art liner; I don't have many liners but I have a feeling there may be a couple of liners in the same shade (e.g., Make Up For Ever and Victoria Beckham Beauty) that I like more - enough to maybe put the Tower 28 on the chopping block at a later date.

Week 5 - Other.jpg

Other - These are all keepers and, except for the Gucci mist which gets Top Shelf designation, will go back into the rotation.

January Declutters

No decluttered beauties this week, which means my total capsule declutters for January holds at 6.
January Capsule Declutters.jpg

That's all I have for my January recap. I'll be back later tonight or early tomorrow morning to post my Black Founded / Owned Beauty Brands Makeup Capsule. I had fun sorting through my collection and am excited to use the beauties in this coming week's capsule. ๐Ÿ’–

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi I thought of something I would like to share โ˜บ๏ธ. Just an idea for a weekly theme. I have seen some videos of influencers that do a full face of a certain brand? Maybe one week we can do that with a brand of choice?

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Yep @Mellmars1185! Thatโ€™s in the works. I love the idea! Thereโ€™s a week for โ€œone brand or all the brandsโ€ - Iโ€™ll see about moving it up the schedule too and will tag you. I was inspired by @sister13 who did something along those lines last year (or the year before last?) for the makeup challenge thread -

Having done these capsules for over a month, itโ€™s been interesting to see that I can do a full face (or nearly a full face) with certain brands. That may be a theme that gets repeated during the year!

Edited to add - mellmars1185, itโ€™ll be part of either March or Aprilโ€™s capsule prompts. March themes will be posted by the end of this week.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi  Wow! A month done! Looks like you made good use of the capsule challenge!!โ€™ And itโ€™s nice to see some declutters!

1. I feel like the challenge is well rounded. I like the different themes thus far they are really pushing me out of my regular rotation! I donโ€™t know if there is anything I think could be improved! I think itโ€™s perfect!

2. Weekly is perfect for me. The ones I did participate in was nice to get everything ready Sunday night for Monday! Iโ€™m not sure if changing it to more or less frequently would be beneficial at this point. I need a week to really gauge how something works for me!

3. I am loving this so far! Iโ€™ve loved the challenge this far and I canโ€™t wait to see whatโ€™s next!!!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Awww, thank you for the feedback @ather. I agree itโ€™s been good to make use of the products I have and Iโ€™ve been very happy to see that others have been able to do the same and enjoying it. I also donโ€™t mind having all my makeup at the ready in the mornings - it makes it easier, faster and also more fun to get ready. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Itโ€™ll be interesting to see how it goes not to have the Tower 28 as the one I automatically reach for. Iโ€™ll have it handy if Iโ€™m not feeling like the foundation in my capsule for the week but it does move me out of my comfort zone a bit and gets me using the other makeup in my stash more which is definitely a good thing, both for using what I have and for assessing whether it makes sense to have it in my collection.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi While you may have talked me out of the Tower 28 liners... I think you and @ather may have talked me into the Merit complexion stick.  I see the other base products your loving and love them as well, so basically I have proof it's gonna be great.

As for your questions...

  1. Likes / Dislikes about the challenge - is there anything you'd like to see more of? What is/are area(s) for improvement?  I really enjoy the themes.  I find they're forcing me to look through my stash and see what can fit.  I'm using this challenge to get me to go through my products more and use a wider range of them.  Not necessarily to declutter, but just to get more use of a wider range of items.  I'm sure there are going to be weeks where I have larger capsules (don't just this coming week, but I'm feeling extra tonight as I choose items) and weeks where I won't have items that fit, or I'm away and just don't have access to my stash, but I'm loving it so far.
  2. How's the frequency for changing up the themes / prompts? Is a week a good cadence? Is it too short?  I really like the weekly change.  I find Sunday nights a time where I'm usually home and I try to do more of a full 'self care sunday' evening routine so I'm able to incorporate a capsule as part of my getting ready for the week to come.  I think depending on the theme a two week slot would be fine as well.  I mostly see the size of my stash and how many things I'd like to incorporate this year... and know I need a more changes lol.
  3. Any other thoughts you'd like to share?  I'm loving this so far!  Great idea Fi! I'm getting to use some products that I've forgotten about and I'm getting some more in depth reviews on products that others are using as well.  All around a winner challenge in my books.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie, the Merit foundation stick has mostly pros for me. The one โ€œconโ€ and it may just be the stick I have is that the bullet or actual stick has fallen out a few times on opening. Itโ€™s managed to not fall on the ground but Iโ€™ve been more careful when removing the top since the first time it happened. Has that happened to you @@ather

I also have the Westman Atelier stick and I like it as well. They provide different coverages for me so that at the moment, I feel like having both in my collection is fine. The Merit gives me light to light-medium coverage and the Westman Atelier is medium coverage that I can build up to a more full coverage look on days when my skin is really good.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi I think I was mixing up the Merit and the WA, my skin isn't a fan of coconut oil and one of them had it as an ingredient.  I'll do a quick perusal before purchase to make sure the one I'm snagging is the one without. Good to know about the stick falling out though, I'll keep an eye out.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie, it looks like the Westman Atelier stick is one with coconut oil specifically listed in its ingredients list.*

INCI list - Westman Atelier Foundation StickINCI list - Westman Atelier Foundation Stick

It doesn't look like there's coconut oil in the Merit ingredients list but I didn't check if all of the listed ingredients are derivatives of coconut oil.

* Screenshots of the ingredient lists are from the product page for each product, as it appears on the Sephora website.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@itsfi I knew it was one of them.  The Sephora I was at this weekend was out of the entire paler end of shades of the Merit.  It's okay... I'll wait and save money and get it during the spring sale!

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

@missjeanie, I have a feeling there's gonna be a lot of purchases from the BIC during the spring sale. ๐Ÿ˜…

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

The Capsule Challenge is helping me add to my collection... not declutter it @itsfi  lol

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

hahahaha @missjeanie. Oopsies.

Oops gif.gif

I mean, you never know, there could be declutters in your future. We're still early in the year.

Re: Capsule Makeup Collection Challenge

Oh no @itsfi   Mine hasnโ€™t fallen out. But I think I remember reading reviews that said that. I feel like they changed the stick since tho. Maybe that fixed that issue @missjeanie
