What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
@danielledanielle This is a great line up!! Can’t wait to see your looks!
@danielledanielle I haven't tried that mascara, but it looks so good!
I love how it lengthens and darkens my lashes. I have pretty straight lashes, so when I see length, I'm impressed. The Gxve mascara also does the same thing, I remember taking a pic of it, but I forgot which side is which. Both look good to me, I like the ami a little better. With Gxve, for me, too many coats go into spiderlash territory.
Ami: It's a very wet formula though, which some reviews note, but I have no issue with it and it doesn't smudge on me.
@danielledanielle Thank you for taking the time to give your feedback. I was wondering about the GXVE too. Unfortunately the Ami Cole is not available in Canada on Sephora.
@danielledanielle Wonderful capsule! The Ami Cole mascara sounds wonderful. What do you enjoy the most about it?
So many pretties @danielledanielle! Those lip choices will all look stunning on you! 😍
Question for you, the PML concealer - are the concealer shades similar to the foundation shades with the same number?
Thank you. m'dear @itsfi
Yea,the foundation and concealer correspond with each other. I should correct myself, I had the sample\foil packet of the PMG on me. Previous year, the medium shade was 18, but recently it was 17, which still worked since it's a small amount.
Week 5 - The Black Owned/Founded Beauty Brand Makeup Capsule
I love the looks of everything you put together for this capsule @Mellmars1185 💟 you should totally start playing with groundwork more, have you tried contouring with it at all?
@CynthieLu Thank you! No I have not tried contouring. That is a good idea. I definitely need more practice in the contouring department.
I've watched alot of videos where Danessa uses this palette for a few multipurpose uses. From lip sculpting, eyebrows, full neutral looks, face contouring etc... @Mellmars1185 just too give you some possible ideas. 😉
@CynthieLu Thanks! I will check out the videos ☺️
@Mellmars1185 I have FOMO every time I see someone using the Fenty stick foundation. I dont need a new foundation... but I mean... if it happens to make its way to me over the next few months... don't be shocked!
How do you like the Groundworks palette? I hear so many extremes who either love or hate it.
@missjeanie The Fenty stick is great! The Sephora site seems to be OOS of a lot of shades. I wonder why? The ground works palette is neat. I need to use it more. I probably did not need to buy it because the neutrals are very similar to the neutrals in the PATRICK TA Major Dimension III Matte Eyeshadow Palette I find. I need to be more crative with the cream side. I have only tried one shade as a base. The packaging is beautiful and convenient. No regrets though!
@Mellmars1185 Great comparison to the Patrick Ta Palette... I have that one so likely don't need both, but now I'm gonna be looking out for some of your looks with the creams!
Beautiful choices @Mellmars1185! Am interested to know your thoughts on the LYS foundation. I’m on a quest to find my shade but like the serum consistency of the foundation. Oh no, your Fenty highlighter is playing a game of hide-and-seek. Keeping my fingers crossed you find it soon.
@danielledanielle Thank you! This will be my first time trying the Lys so if it does not work well for me I will have Fenty as a backup. I hope to give it a test tonight! I am disappointed in myself about the highlighter. Clearly I need to do some organizing! 😆
@itsfi This is such a cool thread. I'm not doing the capsule collection exactly but I'm with you on the goal of trying to use everything I have in my collection. I'm currently on a no-buy and have stuck to it in January. My main challenge this year is using everything I own at least once before purchasing something else in that category.
Right now my focus is eyeshadow so I've been writing down what palette or singles I've been wearing each day and it's definitely helped me make use of products in my collection. I've been also making notes of what shades I used or impressions when wearing the shadows for future reference. This month I mostly used palettes I picked up over the holidays and were new to me. I think I missed writing down a few days' looks but most of the empty days I just didn't do eyeshadow.
I need to do the same with blush, since it's another big category in my stash. Lippies is a little too daunting right now lol
I tend to declutter pretty consistently so I tend to really enjoy what I have, even if not everything is "top shelf". I do have a "chopping block" / purgatory box where I put products I want to use more, finish up, or that I'm thinking about decluttering. Currently, I have the Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Highlighter Wand in a couple of shades. I use these as blush mostly but they're kind of meh compared to other stuff I have and enjoy more. They're probably going to live in my declutter box for a while since I'm having trouble letting them go permanently.
Here are some of the face products that have been in heavy rotation this month. ROSE INC Cream Blush Refillable Cheek & Lip Color Daylily PAT McGRATH LABS Sublime Perfection Concealer L5 NATASHA DENONA Hy-Glam Brightening & Hydrating Medium to Full Coverage Crease Proof Serum Concealer Kulfi Main Match Crease-Proof Long-Wear Hydrating Concealer Mitai Soul Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Glow Serum with Hyaluronic Acid & Niacinamide as well as the MERIT Brow 1980 Volumizing Eyebrow Pomade Gel Brown (not in the picture). I've also been working through all my brushes, as you can see in the giant box filled with the dirty ones lol. Lots of Rom&nd lippies as well.
Here's to another month of enjoying what we have!
@makeitup305 As someone who loves a good tracker/spreadsheet, I’m so happy to see how you’ve created one for this purpose! It’s really helpful to both track what you’ve been using, as well as what you thought about it. I don’t know how many times ive looked at a palette or product I hardly pick up, and can’t for the life of me remember if i like it or not 😅
