CURRENT MAKEUP CAPSULE THEME:
Week 40 - (September 30 - October 6) - The "Pop of Colour": Fall Edit Makeup Capsule and/or The Musician Founded or Owned Beauty Brands Makeup Capsule - Hey BIC! Fall is in full swing. Show us some pop of fall color, be it lipstick, eyeshadow, blush, etc. Shouting out @missjeanie for the great theme suggestion and @cianni who I think mentioned earlier in the year some fall-worthy red lippies in her collection.
With the American Music Awards airing on October 6, thought it might be a fun way to jazz up the prompts with a capsule consisting of one or more products from beauty brands founded or owned by musicians. See spoiler for non-exhaustive list.
Below are some musician founded or owned makeup brands. This is a non-exhaustive list. Brands with an asterisk (*) next to it are available at Sephora (in store or online, or both). If the founder/owner is not easily identifiable by the brand name, his/her/their name appears in the parens.

What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
Week 3 Capsule
I'm learning that my idea of a capsule is really more products than I want it to be, but I'm also being realistic about needing something from every category in order to use only these products and my project pan through the week.
I'm going away for work this week (just a quick 2 nights) so I needed items that I can easily pack along with fitting the theme. On top of that there are two nights this week where I'll be going out and will want something a bit ... more to wear.
-The Missha is a favourite that has been set aside in order to focus on using up some that are not a favourite, so I'm happy to have it for the week!
-The Smashbox/Becca Under eye brightener is the only item over 20$. I just don't have a colour corrector that falls under the $$.
-Cover Girl Powder was purchased when I had some lost luggage... I honestly do not remember if I liked it at all.
-The SC Concealer is brand new so we're going out on a limb here that I'll like it.
-Mascara ... The Benefit is about at it's end, and the SC I don't remember really loving, it's also a wee bit older so it may be trash after day 1.
The only way I could have shadow was if I went for my single products.
-Mac shadows... I may need to replace these with some MUFE singles. I am certain I got these on sale which would have put them under the 20$US, however I might be stretching the premise of the challenge with this one. I'm pretty sure that I have some MUFE in similar shades.
-Colour Pop will be nice for my nights out I think.
-The Rare Beauty liquid shadow was one that I really enjoyed and always hoped for more shades to come out. Kinda sad that it hasn't take off.
-Laura Mercier mini sticks will travel easily I think and since they're the mini size are under the cap!
-I'm feeling some brighter shades this week as it's quite grey and snowy here. The Tower 28 blush is a favourite formula of mine and I'm hoping to spend some time with the LYS this week and decide how I feel about these. I have a few more that I picked up in a set over the holidays and I'm still questioning if I want them to stay with me or to move on to a friend or family member.
Last week I had four lip products. The way I leave them all over the place I felt like I wanted a few more this week just to avoid having nothing when I've left them at work etc.
-The NXY is the only lipliner I have that falls under the cap, and having just gone through my lip liners... I'm kind shocked that I have such a small handful. Old me would see this as a reason to shop the heck out of this category, but new me is going to use the few that I have until the spring sale.
-I really love the Rare Beauty lip gloss formula and am happy to have a reason to pull these out again. They really do feel balmy.
-Innbeauty Lip Glazes, are quite nice. The cookie shade is easy to wear and the mystery shade is a lovely hot pink on me if I re apply a few times in the day.
-Glossier Ultra Lip in Viper is going to be my 'going out' lip this week.
These cover all your bases so well @missjeanie. I feel so confident you are going to pull a bunch of looks out of these picks. 😀
I'm glad I came here and saw how all of you are putting together the capsule this week, I'm getting some good ideas. I think it's going to take some good digging to find things to fit, bit I'm really inspired but what you've done with yours.
@CynthieLu It was a good hour of shuffling things in and out with a phone in hand trying to find prices lol! But I had fun doing it!
I started digging though my things. You nailed it, it is fun to come up with creative ways to use these goodies in our collections. @missjeanie 😜
@missjeanie, beautiful, beautiful choices!!! 😍 Any Kbeauty base product that is in the shade No. 22 is probably one I'm going to love! The 21's are always a smidge too light and sometimes with a greige undertone that is not what I would consider flattering or healthy looking on anyone. The 23's are often too warm or at worst, too warm and orangey for me. 22. I feel like there needs to be more of those shades in Kbeauty bases. I would buy more Kbeauty makeup if that were the case. Ohhhh, on second thought, maybe there shouldn't be more 22's on the market. 😂🤣😂 This must be the new me talking. Wow, the 2024 versions of us are sure savings savvy, missjeanie. I'd usually recommend we treat ourselves to a haul, but that doesn't seem in keeping with the 2024 versions of us. Maybe a spirited refresher or an ice cream refreshment instead. Ha!
Like I said in another post, your lippie collection - so pretty! 💗 I will shop your stash any day!
@itsfi Its funny you mention shade 21 being a tad too greige. I have a 21 here and while I think I can pull it off... I do need to be careful which powders I use to warm it up a bit. I bought 21 first, then found that 22 was a MUCH better match.
Lol... I'm sitting here now enjoying some ice cream with chai concentrate on top. It's delightful and I'm kinda mad I didn't think to do this sooner! I'm going to enjoy window shopping for a bit to figure out my spring haul. My basket will change so often between now and then it'll look like a tornado hit! Side note... I wish we could keep multiple loves lists.
@missjeanie Great selections for under $20 and work travel. Good idea on holding off on buying liners until the sale. Are there any specific shades you have in mind?
@Mellmars1185 I usually go for mauvy berry tones and I'll likely stick with that. I probably have enough to get through a full year but I'll start keeping an eye out and do some window shopping until then!
Week 2 Recap!
These products are part of my Project Pan for 2024. I've decided that I'm going to include them in all of my capsules both to ensure they get used and to give my capsule products some back up. I have no need for other eyeliner or brow products generally so it'll also mean that I don't need choose those weekly. These were all fine. I'm not a huge fan of the Dew You Foundation so I'm still trying to figure out how to mix it with skincare to make it more wearable for me. The brow pencil is meh... it tends to smudge a bit if I don't leave it alone and I really just prefer a tinted gel.
So as you can see.... my version of a capsule collection might rival some of the regular collections of others. I do a full face every day for work and I'm trying to exclusively use these products all week.
Highlights of the week:
- MUFE makes such solid products. The powder was great and I'm happy to use it anytime, though there's so little left I'd like to finish it off. The foundation was great when I need quick as I'm able to draw it right onto my face. I also used this to touch up my base after work before going out for dinner and it really worked well going over my morning make up.
-Didn't quite finish off my Dior concealer, but I did pull the stopper and see it being finished as soon as I work it back into the project.
- The ND Mini Love was a nice add on to my project pan GXVE in order to have a bit of a pink or purple tint. The paler shimmer shade also worked nicely with just the GXVE for an easy look.
- I can't believe I've let my use of the YSL Vinyl Stains wane. I mean... I've seen how many lip products I have... so I get why its happened, but I need to use these more often.
- 4 lip products isn't enough for me in a week. Not that I mind repeating lip wardrobe in the week, but I have the habit of putting them into my purse or pocket or on my desk and then finding I don't have one within easy access.
@itsfi I think for me, doing a capsule each week makes my mornings easier, and hopefully will allow me to actually use some products that I pass over because there's something newer that always seems to strike my fancy. I'll never have a capsule collection overall, but I can at least try during the week lol
I love your capsule collections @missjeanie. I've been using the capsules this month to see "how low can I go" in terms of the fewest number of products in a capsule I can have while being able to do the looks I need. So far, it's hovering between 11 - 18 items - and that's me being very intentional on having fewer products. Mine, I'm sure, will end up being a more ... robust ... makeup capsule collection. 🤣 All good. This isn't one size fits all, or even most; it's about finding the capsule size that suits you.
btw, your selection of lip products is gorgeous!! 😍😍😍 Not surprising but worth mentioning.
@missjeanie Great capsule picks. I like how you included project pan in the capsule. I may try that. The GXVE is a great palette to have for a crease/transition shades. I was so sad when I had to declutter a YSL vinyl stain last year. The formula changed and went bad. I need to give my lippies more love and not let that happen again. I also need several lippies each week.
@Mellmars1185 I'd be sad to have to toss my YSL stains as well. I'm actually impressed at how well a few of them have lasted! And high five for multiple lip products... gotta have choice!
Week 3 - The $20 and Under Makeup Capsule
When it says $20 capsule, that’s $20 USD, which makes this about $27 CAD, riiight? I’d have almost no makeup to play with otherwise. 😅 I have a few that are over budget simply because it’s all I have. I also have a few repeats because they’re my usual routine and have fulfilled all the capsule requirements so far.
@JoSometimes Ah... Tower 28.... within the challenge and still such a winning product! I was so excited when I saw they were 20$ US!!
@missjeanie I was staring at my blush collection, trying to figure out what could work. Good thing I checked the price! 😁
Yep @JoSometimes, that's the right conversion. I updated the original post after @missjeanie brought it to my attention. All good if you go over it; all your makeup doesn't have to fit entirely into the theme. And, conversion rates change daily, right? So even the ones that are over it today could be very well within the range on another day. 😉
Oh! Is that pan or close to pan on that Tower 28 contour / bronzer I see? 😍 It looks like there's a good dip in the product if it's not pan.
@itsfi I know it doesn’t have to but I like the challenge. 😄
And yes! It’s “pan” (more like acrylic bottom). It saw a lot of use when I played around with underpainting last summer.
@JoSometimes Great capsule! I think that conversion is accurate. I may have to consider that when choosing my foundation for the week. I meant to set my products for the week aside today. Oops!
@Mellmars1185I just have the one to work with and it fits perfectly with this challenge. I can’t wait to see what you put together!
Week 2 Recap
like @itsfi , I didn’t really have any losers or declutters for this week. I’m pretty happy with it all, but I do have some notes!
