What is a capsule makeup collection?
A capsule makeup collection is a selection of makeup products that can be used to put together different looks for a variety of occasions. For some of us, that may mean a group of essential products for your everyday look plus a few extra items for a more glam or dramatic look; and, for others of us, that may mean, a lineup of our holy grail product(s) in each makeup category. My ideal capsule makeup collection probably falls somewhere in between - we'll (hopefully) find out at the end of the year! I don't see myself as a minimalist, but I don't have an extensive collection of makeup either. I appreciate the collections of people who fall within both camps but I float somewhere in between - on the one hand, my brow product collection would earn a gold star if we were using a minimalist approach to makeup; my lip product lineup, on the other hand, would not. 🤣 It would most definitely not.
Why have a capsule makeup collection?
Everyone will have their own reasons for having (or not having) a more streamlined makeup collection. Over the years, I've just become more interested in having less beauty products on hand (well, except for lip products, lol) - a handful of items I use or reach for more frequently with maybe a few additional products that are go-to's for me for special events or occasions. Don't get me wrong, I love trying new products and I don't see that changing. I just like the idea of having a simpler collection (I appreciate that "simpler" can be relative), curated to my needs and lifestyle.
Why weekly?
A few years ago, beauty & lifestyle blogger Serein Wu, did a weekly series (on her blog and YouTube channel), Makeup Bag Monday, where she rotated her makeup bag each week with new product launches and makeup already in her collection. Every Monday, she shared the products she selected for the upcoming week and provided detailed makeup reviews on the makeup she used for the previous week. I may not post detailed reviews, but will at least try to include a weekly recap (probably at the end of the week) of what products I like and which ones didn't work for me. If weekly works for you, great. If not, feel free to join in based on what works best for you.
What if I don't have enough products to fit the theme for a full face?
No need for your entire makeup capsule to fit the weekly theme(s). Just one will do. And, even if you don't have one that fits squarely within a theme, feel free to post your makeup capsule. We'd love to see what you're using and hear your feedback on the products as you put them to use.
@JoSometimes For me I find it gives me a glow from within look. I think personally for me I like it. But maybe others feel it isn’t enough if they prefer more sparkle. I will try and snap a pic tomorrow! I had planned on it today but I was super busy and when I thought of it was at lunch during my workout. So probably not the best time!
We'll be base twinsies this week @ather! I love a quick & easy makeup routine; well, pretty much any routine, actually. 😆 I really like that gel serum concealer from the Sephora Collection. I wonder though if it is being phased out though; it looks like there's a new concealer being added to their Best Skin Ever collection.
@itsfi SEPHORA COLLECTION Bright Future Gel Serum Under Eye Concealer? I used to have that one and I was so sad when I couldn’t find my shade anymore. I think it is being phased out… 😢 I switched to MAC Cosmetics Studio Fix 24-Hour Smooth Wear Concealer NW32 and it’s ok but I want to try other things.
@itsfi Yay!!! Oh no! I hope not! Although it gives me an excuse to try others! I have the Tower 28 concealer and the Saie on my list! I tried the best skin ever one but it was more to thick for me I think. Maybe the colour wasn’t a great match also. I’ll have to look into my stash!
@ather, the Tower 28 concealer is nice. I thnk you'll like it. The Best Skin Ever Concealer is on the thick side; for some reason, I think my skin is not liking it of late. ☹️ I do find it applies less heavy when I mix it with a moisturizer or oil, if I'm using it more as a foundation or tint than as a concealer. I saw that there's a new concealer from the Best Skin Ever range - it looks like it will have a lighter consistency and it says it's medium coverage (versus full coverage).
@itsfi oooo I’m excited to try the Tower 28 one now!! Hmm I’ll have to check out the new version of the best skin ever! I like the consistency of the gel serum one and that it’s an almost perfect match for my skin! I find it hard to properly match my skin colour!!
Yeah @ather, I feel like color match plays a big factor in how much I like a concealer. In my mind, I'm okay (for the most part) with a foundation shade being close or sometimes even with picking up two different shades, but with concealer, for whatever reason, I'm a little pickier when it comes to a shade match. Doesn't make sense but that's how it seems to work out when I'm looking at foundation and concealer.
@itsfi I agree 100%. But I’m actually super picky if it’s not matching I can’t wear it!!
@ather How do you like the Tower 28 Beauty SuperDew Shimmer-Free Highlight Balm 0.158 oz/ 4.5 g ? I'm not into shimmer so I often avoid highlighters all together, but this one intrigues me. Is it sticky or does it set down similarly to the blushes?
@missjeanie It sets just like the blushes. It is a very natural look. Perfect for when you don’t need that shine to be to bright!
@ather and onto my loves list it goes! That's exactly what I was hoping you'd say!
I was wondering the same thing as @missjeanie about the highlighting balm @ather. Also adding it to my list. My list is sure getting longer and longer, and it's only Day 7 of the new year. 😆
@itsfi Just means we're learning and discovering new things!! That's a good thing! We've probably added more to our 'I don't need that' lists!
So true @missjeanie, Excellent outlook! I’m happy to say I had a few things in different carts but ended up passing on them. <<pats self on back>>
@itsfi You are doing great! Day 7 but almost day 8!!! It is a great one! I also love using it on a no makeup day to add a little depth to my skin!!!
I spent the last week thinking on how I could be a part of the challenge knowing full well I'm never going to have a capsule collection. That said, I work off a capsule of my collection every few weeks. I tend to try and rotate some of my products every few weeks into a box in my washroom where I get ready. That said, I can also get lazy and only rotate out products when a new one comes into my life. I'm going to try and do more shopping my stash this year and have more thoughtful purchases through the year so that I can hopefully accumulate less. All that said, I'm going to try and use this thread as a motivator to rotate weekly and use the themes to try use some products I wouldn't normally reach for anymore simply due to having too much (I'm lookin' at you lip products).
Easy Winter Collection
-Smashbox Primer - This is easy to use as it's just a quick spritz. Doesn't get much easier.
- The Bobbi Brown Mini Vitamin Enriched Face Base Moisturizer & Primer with Vitamin C + Hyaluronic Acid 0.... is a great one for me with winter starting to set in and a possible snow storm this week.
- The MUFE powder is an older one and it's pretty close to being done. I'm going to focus on this to try and polish it off in the next few weeks. I've used MUFE powders for ... a long time... and they've always been easy to use for me, no matter what I use for base.
- Too Faced Dew You foundation is my project pan foundation and I'm hoping that mixing it with the BB Face Base I'll find a way to make it work for my skin.
- MAKE UP FOR EVER Ultra HD Invisible Cover Stick Foundation is one that really falls into the easy category. I can draw it right on to my face and blend out super quickly.
- NATASHA DENONA Hy-Glam Brightening & Hydrating Medium to Full Coverage Crease Proof Serum Concealer ... is such an easy product for me. It just blends like a dream and wears so well that I don't have to think about it. It is however only coming into play if I finish up my Dior.
- DIOR Backstage Concealer 3W was a lovely product, but it's so dang close to being done that I want it finished. Since I know this concealer, I know what I'll get with it and I know that if I'm not wearing foundation I can get away with this blending well into my skincare.
- Bobbi Brown Under Eye Corrector is one that has always been easy to use. It's a bit of a go to product for me so I know that I like it, but I'm rotating it in since I've let it sit aside for newer products of late.
- Summer Fridays Blush Balm Stick is one that is relatively new to me, but really works for winter as I prefer a cream product on my dry skin and I know this one blends super quick, making it very easy.
Still thinking on how to best do this for me, but I'm going to start here and see how it goes.
I sort of have a similar approach as you @missjeanie I have the makeup items pulled out that I use daily and rotate things in as I feel like it. 😉 Instead of a box my area is a little shelf.
I think using this experiment to help use up your Lippies is a good idea, that's going to help you move through them for sure.
@CynthieLu I think I get overwhelmed with the lipsticks so just use the same ones over and over until something new arrives and I tend to forget about the older ones. Hoping to spread some love this year!
There were a lot of oooohhhh's and aaaaahhhh's coming from my mouth when I saw your capsule for this week @missjeanie! 😍 I would be happy shopping this stash; so many great beauties!
Ummm, wondering what shade that Summer Fridays blush is? Errrr ,,, asking for a friend.
@itsfi It's Pink Skies? I just went on their website to double check that... why are they only 5.60$??? I might need to buy more.
Did you pick up any before they sold out @missjeanie?
