Hi BIC!
A lot of us have talked about our huge lipstick collections, and with the passing of another National Lipstick Day, I took stock of mine. I have about 200 lipsticks and glosses and realized, I only wear about 20 of them! So I'm challenging myself (and whoever else wants to join) to use more of them. I'm going to try to wear a different lipstick every day for the next 100 days.
ABH Plumeria is so pretty on you @MissPuff! I can see why it is one of your favorites. Your skin is looking fabulous! 💓
Thank you @itsfi ! Sheet masks and overhead lighting 🙂
@MissPuff Both of these are really nice on you!
I really ❤️ the Shiseido on you, @MissPuff! You layered it with the Fenty it looks like, curious how much that changes the color, or if it is to mainly add some gloss. They go well together:)
Thank you @eshoe ! I adore the Shiseido Rouge Rouge formula and when they released some non-reds, I had to pick up a few. Amber Afternoon is a MLBB color on me and more matte than some of the reds, hence the gloss bomb. I'd say the fenty brightened up the color a smidge, but otherwise, it pulls a touch browner on me than how it looks in the tube (which I prefer!)
Thank you so much for the pic, @MissPuff! That is a great color😊
Another red today. Almost repeated the red Clinique lip I love due to my outfit which has red. Reached for a gloss instead. Clinique pop lip lacquer in Flame Pop. Also can someone teach me how to take a decent selfie? Everyone looks beautiful and glamorous in their pics. I can't seem to manage that.
Oh @sprocketta I feel the same way every time I try to take a photo. I use my phone which auto backs up to my google drive. It's kind of embarrassing to see all the photos of my face at different angles just to get one semi-decent one. Sometimes I just give up, but then I always forget to delete the bad ones and when I go back through, I'm like "whoa is my chin really that big?!?" I agree with what others have said, phone cameras do weird stuff and can easily distort things. It's all about experimenting to find an angel and lighting that works.
I dunno @sprocketta, you look pretty glamorous in this photo to me!
My selfie advice: take lots of photos from various angles, distances, and heights to figure out what you like best. Sounds obvious, I know. But once upon a very long time ago, I was a photography student with 2 instructors: one for composition, another for darkroom/development. One taught his class all about “proper” photo composition technique, angles, lighting, etc. The other basically said “yeah it’s good to know all that stuff but, honestly, sometimes you just have to experiment with crazy angles and distances to get a great shot.” Back then, experimenting was expensive because of this super ancient thing called film negatives that apparently no one uses anymore. 😄 But that’s the advice that’s always stuck with me.
I don’t take many selfies fully facing the camera, only because the camera I use is my phone. Since the phone lenses aren’t dead center, they’ll always skew a bit to one side unless I manage to hold the phone at the magic angle that flattens things. Since the camera’s going to skew anyway, I just take profile or semi-profile selfies.
And seriously, you look good in your photos!
Thanks @WinglessOne You are too sweet! I will have to experiment more with angles. I usually take a few pics one after another to see if maybe one turns out looking decent. But still not finding anything looking as good as you ladies. I'll give it another shot. Or a few...
I took a photography class in high school and learned to use film in the darkroom. Kids these days have no idea what that's like. Instant gratification. Makes me thing of those little plastic disposable cameras we took on a trip and we had to wait for days for the photos to be printed at Walgreens 🙂
@eshoe @jozkid @WinglessOne I actually just said in my post, "Kids these days..." LOL. Never thought I'd utter that one in my 30s. I feel so old right now.
@sprocketta You feel old! Just imagine how old I can feel,I’m 53 ! You’re aging me even more LOL 😝!
Oh my goodness, @sprocketta,you are not kidding. I had to save up chore money just to pay for what I hoped would be ONE good photo out of 24! It was SO EXPENSIVE.
Ha, I wanted to learn to use the color enlarger just so I could develop my own color photos in a darkroom, instead of waiting for days to get my prints developed. I did get to develop a couple of my own color shots. It made me appreciate the b&w enlarger a lot more. 😄 Nothing ever made me appreciate developing my own negatives, though. To this day, I grumble a bit whenever someone mentions hand-reeling photo negatives. Those were the days...
In addition to angles, play with distance. A lot of my selfies are closeups because my arms aren’t very long. (The joy of being a short person.) But sometimes those close shots are the ones I like best. Other times, not so much. You can also do fun things like playing with light and shadow outdoors on a sunny afternoon. Just don’t get frustrated, and remember that you’re your worst critic. (I have to remind myself of that often.)
Omg! Winding film onto those metal wire reels in the dark, hoping you got them on there without the film touching each other. The stuff of college nightmares @WinglessOne
I regale young designers with how we used to spec type for jobs back in the day. Oh the misery. No "It doesn't fit? Just knock it down a point size on the computer." Nope, counting all the characters in a piece of copy was a little slice of hell. And expensive if you got it wrong because the typesetter would have to do it all over again. I'm getting heart palpitations just thinking about it!
@jozkid I like to tell young designers “oh, you think kerning is a pain now? You have no idea!”
As much as I like our digital advances, I do miss—and refuse to let go of—some analog things. I really miss working in the darkroom (except reeling negatives). I don’t miss the old typesetting days, though. 😄
Kerning is a pain now? @WinglessOne
Heaven knows it used to be!
I have to admit, I kind of hated photography classes. The creative part was OK, but I don't miss fussing with all the chemicals and praying no one turned on a light in the darkroom. I am still old school when it comes to doing illustrations, though. I like all the different traditional media.
Hi @sprocketta,this is a nice shiny red on you 🙂 As for selfies, you look good. I think its more about the angle of the camera and I was told to keep your hands, I mean camera, at the level of your eye. The lens can kind of distort if it's not angeled a certain a way, it depends on type of lens you have.
Hope this helps 🙂
Thanks for the tip @Buootiful Hopefully I can improve with this suggestion!
