Hi BIC!
A lot of us have talked about our huge lipstick collections, and with the passing of another National Lipstick Day, I took stock of mine. I have about 200 lipsticks and glosses and realized, I only wear about 20 of them! So I'm challenging myself (and whoever else wants to join) to use more of them. I'm going to try to wear a different lipstick every day for the next 100 days.
32- Bite Peacock Pearl. I was excited because I have a week off...but I'm having more dental surgery Tuesday haha so I won't get to wear as much as I hoped.
Beautiful duochrome shift on you @Samtian ❤️, love this shade. I’ll have to remember it for metals week on the rainbow challenge.
@2manyperfumes Thank you! I'm not sure how I feel about the shape of the stick, it was pretty sheer too.
True it’s pretty sheer. I like it over a lipliner or matte lipstick @Samtian ❤️
31- Bite Cava. Where did everyone go :'(
I love Cava by Bite. It’s my fave nude from them @Samtian ❤️💝. It’s ethereal.
@Samtian Aw, I’m glad you’ve helped keep this thread going!
I was going to start posting again after doing another big declutter, which hasn’t gone well at all. 😄 It’s gone so badly, I finally resigned myself to Official Lipstick Hoarder status and broke out my 3rd lipstick carousel... the one I’d kept boxed up for a year, determined to keep my bullets limited to just 2 carousels. Each carousel can hold 80 bullets. They’re also quite configurable: I can remove some of the dividers as needed. I did that to the top of one carousel so I could jam lots more mini bullets into that space. Because you can never have too many minis! All my liquid lipsticks are still in a big bathroom drawer that’s getting cluttered... sigh.
I still have plenty of not-new lipsticks to share, and I’m still going to try another declutter. I also need to rearrange a lot of bullets, now that there’s a 3rd carousel of space. I’ll probably start posting here again soon. I still have my running list in iOS Notes, so I can pick up where I left off. It’ll be fun to participate here again. 🙂
The first round of decluttering is the easiest...it's not hard to toss the lowest ones on the totem pole. But once you know you like everything, getting rid of more is hard...I started to feel borderline panicky trying to decide what to toss. Eff it...they all stay. Hahahaha
I cant really even say I've been good about not buying more. I mean, yeah, I've been good at avoiding lipsticks, but I've just channeled all that excess hoarding to nail polish. I have to cut more makeshift shelves asap, while I decide if I want to build a new cabinet (that I have nowhere to put right now... 😕 )
@RGbrown Heh, I managed to get through 2 serious lipstick declutter rounds and a few much smaller lightening rounds of “which [small color family] lipsticks must go.” But I gave up when it was time to tackle the warm, cool, and “true” reds. 😄
My other large hoard is sheet masks. I keep saying I have more lipsticks than sheet masks but honestly, the reverse might be true. I counted all my masks a few days ago but haven’t done a lipstick recount this year. Last month I bought a rolling set of plastic Sterilite drawers just to house sheet masks, and that’s not enough room for all of them. 🤦♀️ The craziest thing: I usually do far more masking in fall and winter than spring and summer. This means I have a big overflow of masks with 2020 expiration dates. This year I’ve challenged myself to mask each season and use up as many sheets as I can. Of course this hasn’t stopped me from buying more masks—just as I haven’t stopped buying more lipstick—because c’mon, it’d be silly to stop!
Meanwhile, fate’s sick sense of humor (can’t even wear any of my lipsticks out in public until this pandemic dies down) has not gone unnoticed. Ugh.
2020 exp dates? Pfffft...I'm finishing up 2018/2019 this year, and set the 2020s off in the "still have plenty of time" stash with the 2021/2022 masks 😮 I've always known sheet masking wasn't my favorite thing; for the most part I just tolerate 'em, but for some reason I kept buying them. Biobelle was my one true love, and I see they've discontinued all the ones I liked and replaced them with new masks that have subpar material and too much fragrance, so once I finish off my current stash, this might be a category I exit completely, save for the occasional GWP/freebie. Mine don't require a rolling cart, but I still have way too many for someone that's not terribly partial to them lol.
My nail polish has always outstripped my lippie collection, but I also started painting my nails long before I got into face makeup, so I never really expected that to change. And I don't think I could tolerate that sort of volume, frankly...the 200ish lipsticks I have now is already overkill 😛
I froze up trying to sort the berry/magentas and pull out similar shades. Even found a few that were so freakin' close, I'd call them true dupes. Still couldn't figure out which one(s) to ditch...everything I have now has survived wear testing and been deemed a-ok, so I decided I'm content to keep them, dupes and all.
@RGbrown Yeah, the fun part of sheet masks (once you’ve collected a large enough stash of ‘em) is Expiration Roulette. “Hmm, this mask officially expired 3 years ago... but let’s open it up and see if it smells okay!” 😄 I probably won’t use a vitamin C mask too far beyond its exp, but most other types of “expired” sheet masks are fair game.
Lipstick was my first cosmetic love, followed quickly by eyeliner and nail polish. I wasn’t much into eyeshadow until the mid to late 1990s. Blush was no big deal to me until the 2010s, which is funny considering how much I love it now. (Thanks a lot, Mr. Nars.) I’m not sure when I stopped frequently using nail polish. I can’t that on blame piano playing or typing fast, since I was doing both long before I fell in love with nail polish. I’m sure GAD had something to do with it, but now I wonder what truly made me give up on it—and it happened fairly recently, in the late 2010s. I even used to travel with nail polish, remover, etc. And now that I really think about it, I think this photo is the last time I “did” my nails... it’s from November 2018. I haven’t let my nails grow that long since. (Haha, as if that nail length is anywhere near “long.” 🤣)
I kinda miss nail polish. But I’ll probably never have a huge collection of it, considering how many sheet masks and lipsticks I have. I probably need to treat my lipstick true dupes as backups and put them in my backups bin. But nah. I hadn’t even gotten to the berries before the reds stopped my last declutter round. I know dang well a berries declutter would mean giving up MAC Rebel, and I’m not yet emotionally ready to do that. I’d have extreme trouble with a few other very similar shades. It’d be an even more frustrating declutter than the reds were. Yesterday I made a half-serious attempt to declutter some purples and nope, not happening. Eh, I might change my mind in a couple days. I can be ruthlessly picky and performance-driven about cuts sometimes.
@WinglessOne Haha it's not a bad title to keep! Can't wait to see what else you have! Sounds like a fun project though. Where did you get the carousals from?
@Samtian I got mine from Amazon. Looks like my model’s not made anymore, though. 😞 There are others available, but they’re wider and hold fewer bullets (usually 64). I love this one because it holds more bullets yet has a smaller footprint.
The Amazon page:
My original 2 carousels (photo from January, after I bought more countertop drawers):
I stuck 2 acrylic cubbies on the sides of one carousel to hold lip crayons and lip liners. I’ve since added another cubby so I can store all my Guerlain Rouge Gs together—because their awkward shape doesn’t play nice with the carousel holes.
@WinglessOne Hmm I'll keep an eye out, thanks!
@Samtian I've been looking but was waiting until I felt better to start posting again. Love this one on you.
@sprocketta Thank you! Hope you feel better soon, can't wait to see you posting again!
@lmaster Thank you! haha I noticed it was just me and you.
