Hi BIC!
A lot of us have talked about our huge lipstick collections, and with the passing of another National Lipstick Day, I took stock of mine. I have about 200 lipsticks and glosses and realized, I only wear about 20 of them! So I'm challenging myself (and whoever else wants to join) to use more of them. I'm going to try to wear a different lipstick every day for the next 100 days.
Day 19. Excited about this one. I've been saving it. Smashbox always on lipstick from the Smashbox Vlada collab. The shade is In Bloom. Hooray for metallics!
Also I've done eye looks the last 4 days as I'm trying to look more polished. Thanks for the encouragement ladies.
Man, I think metallics are your thing @sprocketta! That looks fantastic on you ❤️
I think Smashbox has the best metallics so far. I can't wait to put on some Smashbox liquid lips when I get to them.
You could checkout Ulta they have a box set of Be Legendary 3 creams and 4 metallics gloss/lipstick hybrids. Sometimes it goes on sale for $40 and is worht it for so many full size lippies. 🙂
@sprocketta I love both the lipstick and your eyeshadow! You look great 😉! By the way I happen to LOVE metallics and shimmers! It just gives you a special look, some extra sparkle! The key is not to go in sparkle overload since you didn’t want to look like a firework! I’m glad that you’re trying new looks, keep it up! You’re doing great 👍!
Thanks! @keana1 I've been exploring the UD Naked palette (yes, I was late to the show) and that eye shadow is from there. I have a few other metallic lipsticks and love those as well. As you said, you have to be careful so you don't go overboard.
I love that gold shadow @sprocketta It's so lovely on you and it goes so well with the lippie! I like that it's metallic but not in a weird robotic way.
@michelleshops lol "not in a weird robotic way" Thanks for the kind words.
@sprocketta The gold looks great! I love using gold on my eyes. Isn’t it a fantastic feeling when you put on a lippie and you’re just like “Yaaaassssss.”
@alexasteph Yes, that's how I felt when I put that lipstick on!
Speaking of lipsticks that make you look dead: this is Smashbox Be Legendary cream lipstick in Skinny Jeans. It’s one of the few blues that truly make me look asphyxiated. It’s so grayish blue, my phone camera automatically pulled extremely yellow/warm to compensate—which made me look like an overripe tangerine, so I did lots of color correcting in iOS Photos afterward. 😄 This made the final photo too red/cool toned overall, but at least the lipstick appears true to in-person color. And I refuse to pull this photo into Photoshop CS to fully color correct everything because honestly, this lipstick’s not worth the effort.
I wore it for just one hour today, thinking “maybe I’ll like it now that I haven’t worn it in months.” But nope: it’s still super patchy and not buildable. It doesn’t work well as a topper either (I’ve tried many times). I’ve meant to toss it for a long time... I think I kept it in case I wanna do ghost or zombie makeup for Halloween. But it’s too lousy a performer for that. So now it’s in my declutter box.
Did I mention how much I hate this lipstick?
@WinglessOne This challenge is totally making me go back and try lipsticks I didn't like. Just confirms my previous thoughts and decision to get rid of them.
I also keep lipsticks for potential Halloween looks, especially the unconventional shades that I really want to like but just cant justify wearing normally. One really saved me recently by assisting me in creating a teal lip to match my shirt.
@Anonymous Careful, or you’ll end up with a declutter box full of lipsticks, including the ones you’d saved for Halloween. 😄 Last night I found more “maybe this’ll work for costumes” lipsticks in my collection, and those are now in the box.
My new lipstick rule: if it’ll only work for one occasion, then it’s not worth buying/keeping. Try to get more than once-a-year use out of it to justify keeping it. Sticking to that will be hard because it’s fun to stockpile lipsticks for costumer/art looks. But if a special occasion lipstick can’t work outside that occasion—even as a base coat or topper—then it’s time to let it go.
You're right. I actually didn't realize how many lippies I had until starting this challenge. Lol. I would feel better parting with them if I knew they were going to get used and not simply tossed, like some of the others had been speaking about.
Maybe we should start the "Lipstick colors we despise" thread @WinglessOne
@jozkid Ha, that and/or lipstick formulas we despise. The lipstick I’m wearing in my profile picture is a color I like but, unfortunately, it’s one of the worst liquid matte formulas I’ve ever tried. I definitely won’t wear it for this thread. Its fate is already sealed.
I get chills when I think about how much $ we’ve spent on things that just did not work @WinglessOne

I just want to cry when I look at my declutter box and see how much money is there 😥
I'm trying to spin it positively and use it as a lesson against future spending on untested items and just buying so much excess in general. Still makes me wanna cry though 😋
@RGbrown @jozkid I plan to keep a photo of my declutter box to remind myself to stick to my “do I REALLY need this” rule. It’s a painful lesson I should’ve learned in my 20s or 30s, but here we are.
I wish I could donate all the solid bullets and crayons/pencils (well, the ones that perform decently) after sanitizing them but, understandably, most places won’t accept them. At least I knock any remaining product out of MAC tubes and bring the empties to a MAC store/counter for... um... a free lipstick... but it’ll be a lipstick I’ll wear on a regular basis! Or it’ll be a gift for someone else.
That’s what bugs me most about my declutter box: all the tangible waste I’ve produced, with very few ways of reusing/donating/upcycling. I’d rather not just toss all that lipstick in the trash. I might try using some of them as art supplies, along with some eyeshadow palettes I hate but haven’t tossed yet. I need to turn this box of woe into something tangibly positive. 🙂
@WinglessOne and @RGbrown I've kind of been wondering...what's the purpose of a declutter box? It seems like just an extra step to save them intending to toss them. I guess if you're looking to give something away, I understand. I feel like a lot of people are having a lot of trouble letting go. It was tough for me when I did but I binned most of it and haven't looked back since.

For me it's a bit of an inability to just throw that much money away outright lol. I also realized I got rid of one thing I maybe shouldn't have, so I like having a buffer zone of "not in my collection but not quite gone yet". And I do hope to find a way to keep at least some of this stuff in circulation instead of a landfill, whether through family/friends or trading or donating...I just have to get around to figuring that out lol.
Trouble letting go though...yup...that's me 😂
@sprocketta Since my lipstick collection’s quite large, I’m doing a multi-step purge, section by section. The declutter box helps me a few ways.
1. The more items I see in the box, the more confidently and comfortably I can toss more items into the box. It gets me past the “this is so overwhelming, I don’t know where to start, I’ll never get this done” anxiety stage.
2. The box is a progress report. I need some sense of accomplishment to keep me motivated to do this.
3. I can sift through the box and find common themes, which helps me realize there are certain kinds/types of lipstick I shouldn’t buy anymore. Example: there are lots of coral shades in the box. I didn’t even know I had so many corals! I guess I thought “someday I’ll find the right coral” while buying these, but now I’m convinced that won’t happen. 😄 Also, there are lots of ColourPop liquid mattes in the box, which doesn’t really surprise me but confirms that I need to stop giving those mattes a chance.
4. I’ll try to find new homes for some box items, so it’s good to have them all gathered in one place. I don’t like to toss things in the trash without trying to donate/upcycle/recycle them first.
5. The box is a good visual to keep in my mind whenever I’m about to buy more lipstick. It’ll help me stick to my “do I REALLY need this” rule.
6. Inspiration for other folks: a friend of mine saw my lipstick declutter box and is now inspired to purge her own equally large collection. (Heh, lipstick junkies always seem to find one another.) Seeing other people’s declutters can really help motivate you.
Most of this is self-inflicted Jedi mind trickery, but it’s necessary for me. 🙂
