Hi BIC!
A lot of us have talked about our huge lipstick collections, and with the passing of another National Lipstick Day, I took stock of mine. I have about 200 lipsticks and glosses and realized, I only wear about 20 of them! So I'm challenging myself (and whoever else wants to join) to use more of them. I'm going to try to wear a different lipstick every day for the next 100 days.
@MissPuff I wish I could see it in person. I'm always impressed when someone can pull off a shade like that. It does look red here, and very lovely on you. I SHOULD be putting aside my already worn lippies but hadn't thought to do that. Good idea!
Finally put on some lipstick 3 hours ago before going out to dinner. This is Urban Decay Vice lipstick in Firebird, paired with MAC Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in Rebellious. Not wearing any other makeup (except brow pencil) because I’m giving my skin a breather while it finishes its breakout/irritation tantrum.
Firebird has a pearly finish with an iridescent blue shift that’s very hard to catch in still photos. Let’s try an extreme closeup:
I love this lipstick but rarely wear it because it’s a chronic bleeder. To wear it, I have to use a very grippy lip primer (Cargo’s primer instead of my usual MAC primer) on my lips to make it stick, then overline my lips with the MAC lip primer as a barrier (the Cargo primer is terrible for that), *and* use a good lip liner as extra insurance. Otherwise Firebird will bleed all over my chin and mouth area. Reapplying it is a pain because of all that. But the color payoff is fantastic.
@WinglessOne I am crazy for this colour. It's kind of in the family my hair is currently fading through (from a more decidedly purple in June). I've had similar problems with the bleeding issues, and it's totally made me hesitant to slap on some of my thinner lipsticks because of it (I am soooo lazy not wanting to go through the lip liner effort). But seriously, you are giving me life with this and now I am going to hunt down a similar colour in my collection to wear tonight! Also, the brow/lip combo is one I put to work often. My glasses kind of tie the whole show together and (if only in my mind) make me look somewhat put together. You look so great with so few elements. Love. It.
Thanks so much, @NotCrocker! I hear you on the lip liner laziness: there aren’t many lipsticks (not even liquids) I’ll go through all the liner effort for. And really, that should be one of my declutter criteria. “Would I use 2 primers plus a liner to make this lipstick work, if I had to?”
Brows + lipstick = my “everyday” routine. Lately I’ve added blush to that routine, and sometimes I’ll add a tiny bit of concealer to mask some under eye darkness. I kinda miss wearing eyeshadow/liner/mascara more frequently... I go through phases with that. But hooray for minimal looks! Can’t wait to see your Firebirdesque lipstick!
This is a fantastic color on you! @WinglessOne.
Isn't it annoying when the color is so good but the wear is bad? I have one of Laura Geller's Fifty kisses liquid lip and its horriblel for feathering//bleeding. Ive worn it 2x and am dreading wearing it in the challenge. It says it's kiss proof but it wouldn't be even if I blew a kiss across the room, lol.
Thanks @Buootiful! Sometimes I think those kiss proof claims really mean “no one will kiss you because they don’t wanna end up wearing this lipstick.” 😄
@WinglessOne This is a gorgeous color on you. I'm also a big fan of the MAC prep and prime lip primer. I use it with everything. It sucks when a good lipstick bleeds. I agree that some colors are worth the extra effort to make them work.
Thanks @sprocketta! I use that primer mostly with liquid lipsticks, and always with liquid mattes. I don’t need to use it with most of my creamy solid lipsticks, but it definitely helps those too—especially solid mattes. I love Urban Decay Heroine but it’s a Vice matte that needs a balm + primer base for comfort.
@WinglessOne Oh this is a gorgeous color! Adding it to my list...And your skin looks pretty good even with a couple minor blemishes!
Whew! That’s a definite keeper @WinglessOne! Beautiful!
I love Firebird. I have it from the Gwen Stefani collection, so I don't know if they changed much when they released it as a Vice lipstick, but man is it beautiful. @WinglessOne
@snoflakefaerie I don’t remember the original bleeding/feathering this much, but I could be in blissfully ignorant memory mode about that. But yeah, the color is absolutely worth the extra effort needed to wear it. I’ve yet to see Firebird look bad on anyone, regardless of skin tone/shade.
This is a beautiful lip color on you! 🙂
@WinglessOne This is such a gorgeous colour! It complements your skin tone so well! Have you ever tried an invisible lip liner that prevents lipstick from bleeding?
Thanks @keana1! I have 2 brands’ invisible lip liners, but neither of them work as well or feel as nice as the MAC Prep + Prime Lip primer. Firebird is one of 2 lipsticks I always use to test primers and invisible liners. The other lipstick is Smashbox Be Legendary in Iced Out, which I’ll definitely wear during this 100 day challenge. That one is 100% guaranteed to bleed, and nothing completely stops it—but at least the MAC primer drastically reduces it.
The Cargo lip primer feels kinda yucky and leaves a white tacky film wherever you put it. But it acts like a magnet for problematic lipsticks. I don’t overline with it because that would encourage lip color to creep out beyond my lip line and potentially feather. I don’t whip that primer out unless I’m dealing with a real problem child lipstick.
@WinglessOne I have never heard about the Cargo lip primer before!
@keana1 Ulta used to sell it. The full name is Cargo HD Picture Perfect Lip Primer, if you’re interested in looking for it. On me it’s not moisturizing at all, so it needs a good lip balm underneath. It cost me $15-20 USD when I bought it (last year, I think) from Ulta. I think most Walgreens that sell theBalm also still sell Cargo, so you might be able to find the primer there. Kohl’s and Dermstore sell some Cargo stuff, too.
That color looks so good on you, @WinglessOne I only wear it when I am feeling ready to take on the world😆! I’ve heard some good recommendations on BITE BEAUTY - Line & Define Lip Primer for more definition. I haven’t picked it up yet but am adding to my (growing) November list.
