how long can you keep makeup before it expires? I know mascara can only keep for 2-3 months

There should be a symbol like this that shows for how many months after opening a product is good. If the texture or smell changes, I would throw things out even if they haven't been open for as long as labeled though.

Agreed and I also feel like the opposite is true...I'm not going to throw out a palette or lipstick that is performing the same as usual and has no weird smells or textures even if it's out of date ... I would be spending an insane amount of money on replacements if I did that haha. 

But I am more careful with things like eyeliner and mascara because I have sensitive eyes

Agreed, eye stuff you want to be careful with(though tbh I'm terrible about throwing those out as well), but no way I'm throwing away a limited edition (or any edition) eye shadow palette that's practically full and preforms like new just because it's gone past a date printed on it.
