I wish they would do a bag like that for US too. It is so cute!
It seems like Canada always gets a Lunar New Year promo, I wish the same was true for the U.S.
@ohheyitscindyk Why does Canada get the lunar new year promo and not the US? Are there more people observing lunar new year in Canada than the US? No offense, Canadians, but your population is literally 1/10 of the US. I don't 'get it!
@itscarin Come visit Toronto or Vancouver and you will get why LNY is so big in the major metropolitan areas. Toronto is the 4th largest city in North America. About 20% of its population is East asian. Vancouver’s population is smaller but about 30+% of its population is East Asian. I can give you the stats but you have to see it to really get it. There’s actually more Asians in the US but it’s demographicaly insignificant. Lol.
@itscarin This is purely anecdotal, but I've got a ton of family in Toronto and Vancouver and while Canada has a much smaller population, percentage-wise, I feel like there are waaaaaaaaay more Chinese people in Canada than in the US. There are whole suburbs and neighborhoods, giant malls, shopping centers, etc that are JUST Chinese. I can find (and more importantly, eat) things in Toronto and Vancouver that I've only ever seen in HK. Sure, the US has a couple of cities with chinatowns (and honestly, most of them are now disappearing) but it's really not on the same scale. And the Lunar New Year is a holiday in Canada that even non-Chinese people know about, which is definitely NOT the case in the US.
However, I have noticed more and more companies offering Lunar New Year themed promos in the US in past 5 or so years, outside the standard international brands that already catered to the asian market, most likely tied to the influx of the super moneyed foreign Chinese coming to live and study stateside (rather than the existing asian-american population already here).
@MissPuff I first saw commercial celebrations of Lunar New Year in San Francisco. In Boston, it was totally unheard of. Right now the malls outside of DC are decked out in Lunar New Year decorations. It would be interesting to hear from someone who has been to the Prudential center in Boston if they're decked out for LNY or not.
The malls around here have signage in Chinese about how to pay with apple pay or alibaba or something. I haven't paid enough attention to tell you what it says exactly, but there's definitely a sense of an influx in Chinese shoppers. I'm not sure if they're tourists or residents.
Based on the very long NYT piece I read awhile back, it's Chinese middle class citizens who are coming to the US to buy land. I can see why you'd want to invest your money in foreign real estate when the local market only supports a 99 year leasing arrangement with the government. (My overly simplified understanding of Chinese real estate based on an article I read over 4 years ago.)
@itscarin Interesting about DC, the only place in the US (outside of chinatowns) that I've ever seen Lunar New Year decorations is Las Vegas and they do it HUGE, all up and down the strip and in all the casinos, but that's for obvious* reasons 🙂 I've never seen CNY decorations in the Pru, though now I'm going to go this weekend to see what's up! It's entirely possibly, the non-native asian population in Boston has exploded over the past few years, I feel like every other college aged student is rocking a canada goose parka and Supreme something 🙂
*Chinese (and vietnamese) people are pretty superstitious, gambling and winning during the new year (and holidays) is supposed to signify luck, prosperity, and good fortune for the rest of the year. If you ever want to view the entire Chinese population of a city in one place, check out your local casinos over the holidays 🙂 Many a childhood holidays was spent absorbing second hand smoke while aimlessly wandering around Foxwoods.
The Canadian and the US real estate market have historically be very popular for parking Chinese money, aside from the fact that western real estate is practically free in comparison to major chinese cities, there are a variety of political reasons for western investment. I could go on forever, but the current Chinese administration's crackdown on corruption and political rivals is a major factor in the massive cash outflow from China in the past decade. Add on the growing middle class that you mentioned, and it's a wonder more retailers haven't caught on earlier to the massive spending power of the foreign chinese.
@MissPuffI grew up in CT, my parents still live there, and I've *never* been to the casino except for a field trip in high school. LOL. My parents have been several times and I hear it's nice! Maybe if they do a UFC fight there I'll make it out some time. The most gambling I do is Beautylish's lucky bag!
I feel like the large department stores have caught on to asian-influenced spending trends. The Bloomingdales in SF, and the one here in the suburbs of DC are fully decked out for LNY. And I think Saks did a 11% off promotion for Singles Day. Beautylish has been doing lucky bags for some time now, too.
If any other culture has a shopping holiday, I'm all ears!
(The Beautylish bags are for Japanese new year on Jan 1... they're fukubukuro bags. Whole other thing.)
@itscarin Ha, I'm not a gambler at all either, I think blowing my money on a million lipsticks is a better use and more fun 🙂 My aunts and uncles (my parents actually aren't into gambling AT ALL) stopped going to Foxwoods once Mohegan opened and now there's going to be a Wynn branded casino right in Boston. It's kinda nuts!
Bring on the shopping! I do remember the Single's Day promos now that you mention it!
That is a great sample bag @Krisper92 ! Wish I was in 🇨🇦 as well😉
It's been a long time since I've seen that photo, but that is definitely not a "friend zone" look. lol @itscarin
@Ispend2much6 We're just a couple of American girls lusting after Canadian goods. 😉
Canada has some great natural resources. I guess it's not all maple syrup and poutine. @itscarin
ooh yes that is adorable!
Could someone else check out the MERRY16/TWOFORYOU/PICKTHREE codes?
They appear to have expired or maybe it's just a glitch on my part.
Thanks!
