I pulled a foot long, living plant out of my bathroom drain tonight! What did this?

My top suspect is the Glamglow but in also wondering about the Origins black clay mask. I'm thankful that this particular incident was so easily solved but would like to prevent future issues.

Re: I pulled a foot long, living plant out of my bathroom drain tonight! What did this?

LOL I think it's a perfectly reasonable solution.  Although, with this stupid extra cold winter, I'd be wearing an ice mask.  At least that would just melt in into the drain.

Re: I pulled a foot long, living plant out of my bathroom drain tonight! What did this?

I really don't think that plant was caused by a mask.  Even if a mask has seeds in it they should flush completely through your plumbing system when you run the water.  I suggest calling a plumber and having your pipes cleared.

Re: I pulled a foot long, living plant out of my bathroom drain tonight! What did this?

Hey Jandi, I'm an engineer and we see things like this often. They're usually associated with broken sanitary lines beneath your house, enabling soil and vegetation to enter your pipes. This can also lead to potential problems with your foundation due to the excess of water draining from the broken pipe (depending on your location and the types of soil present).

I've honestly never encountered vegetation in a pipe due to something other than a broken line, but that's not to say it isn't possible. I'd try to monitor the situation and, if possible, get a plumber out to camera your sanitary lines.

Re: I pulled a foot long, living plant out of my bathroom drain tonight! What did this?

It was a foot long and sticking out of the drain, it didn't crawl up the sewer pipe.  It's a bean that got dropped in the sink, probably caught in the fins sticking out of the plug and reached down to drink that little bit of water that's always in the trap.  For a bean that's less than a week of growth particularly somewhere warm like a bathroom.

Re: I pulled a foot long, living plant out of my bathroom drain tonight! What did this?

Sounds like the Little Shop of Horrors movie, probably just a trapped seed.  For prevention,

2 cups baking soda
4 cups boiling water
1 cup vinegar

Directions for Homemade Drain Cleaner:

Remove all water from the sink or tub and pour about 1 cup of baking soda down the drain. Make sure that baking soda makes it down the drain.
Next, pour about 2 Cups of boiling water down the drain. The baking soda mixed with boiling water dissolves the sludge and gunk in the pipe, even if you don’t see it happening. Wait a few minutes.
Now, pour another cup baking soda down the drain then add 1 cup of white vinegar and plug the drain immediately. If you’re unclogging a double sink, plug both drains. You’ll hear sizzling coming up from the drain and see bubbles foaming up.
When the bubbles have died down, add the remaining boiling water down the drain.
Repeat this process if necessary. This can be used as a monthly treatment helps prevent future clogs too; simply pour a cup of baking soda down the drains followed by boiling water.

Dumb question, but do you think work for hair stuck and what happens if you dont have like a "plug" for the sink. I have this olde school one where you just holes in the bottom and you can't really have a way to "stop or hold" water in the basin?

Re: I pulled a foot long, living plant out of my bathroom drain tonight! What did this?

You would have to probably have to use wire to get it out If it is super clogged. They sell kits at Home Depot.

That's a pic of one of the "snakes" in a Drano kit. I believe most are made of plastic now as to not be too scratchy or damage the interior of pipes.

I use one of their kits and it worked very well (if anyone plans on snaking their pipes, please be sure to use the right formula and stick with time frames, the gel that helps dissolve and dislodge debris can be damaging if used too frequently). The key with the snakes is to be patient and not just force the whole thing down the drain (as much as you may want to do that), feed it in a little at a time, and work it up and down a bit so it can snag debris on the little hooks and then you can pull it out, clean it off and repeat the process. The snake did manage to loose a few of the plastic teeth during the process, but it definitely worked.

eww!

And now this makes me wonder if I'll be doing the same thing in the near future since my husband doesn't know how to be sick in the toilet instead of the bathtub. >.<

If this happens, HE's going to be doing the pulling.

I love that gif! I use it all the time in another forum (hahahah). How do you post them here?? Just the link?

Re: I pulled a foot long, living plant out of my bathroom drain tonight! What did this?

You can right click and do the "copy image" and then paste into the thread direct or use the "link to a picture" option on the side of the posting window and paste the actual link/url of the gif. I find that copy/pasting direct saves space because photo albums here only hold 1000 images and I had hit mine not long ago. Since then I've been going back and trying to clear some room, but most of what I upload are the copy/paste method.

Oh jeez, I didn't realize there was a limit on the album... that will become a problem at some point!
