Fragrance Junkie Central

I know there are a few of us on BT that are fragrance addicts, so I thought it would be nice to have a dedicated place where we can share our thoughts.

This is not to take away from the lovely What Are You Wearing Today, Fragrance Edition thread, but more a place to post longer reviews, chat about new brands or releases, and just shoot the breeze on anything good and smelly 🙂

For me, I recently acquired 2 new decants that I've been anxiously awaiting.  Ever since Lachaton mentioned that MMM was releasing a new scent called By The Fireplace I've been itching to get my hands on it.  My decant arrived yesterday, so I'm looking forward to marinating in it this weekend.  Secondly, I recently picked up a tiny sample of Shiseido Nombre Noir.  Supposedly it is one of the most expensive failures in perfume history - made by Serge Lutens for Shiseido back in the 80s.  Of course, with a backstory like that, I was dying to get a sniff 😄

What's new on your scent radar?  Do tell!

Re: Fragrance Junkie Central

@WinglessOne I suspect it's a reformulation versus cost of materials issue? Malle has reformulated but he strikes me as someone who would rather shelve a scent than see it reformulated below his standards. Because I agree, these two do not strike me as unpopular fragrances in the house. Very surprizing! Well, a former Malle SA confirmed the discontinuations with me so that's now two decent sources. Fans of these scents should definitely get in touch with their Malle SA 😞

Trends I've noticed after EL gets involved in a perfume house include

  • smaller sizes, travel sizes
  • discovery sets
  • axing products
  • "masstige" products that are more affordable but significantly more expensive than designer products
  • pressure to increase profit margins which sounds obvious but I read an interview where Kilian Hennessy, no stranger to business, was struggling with this pressure from EL and it seemed like he had to make a lot of concessions - but he said he felt compelled to sell to EL because of its extensive distribution networks. This then makes me think that with extensive international distribution, there is likely pressure to cater to the tastes of the largest markets. Like, I wonder if the uptick in tuberose fragrances has been because of Chinese tastes. Culturally, tuberose is not considered carnal and challenging like it is in Europe and N. America. It is considered pure and clean.

Last one today, Burberry is releasing a new fragrance for men, Hero. Adam Driver fans take note

The fragrance is brightened with sparkling bergamot and invigorated with juniper and black pepper. This vibrant scent is deepened with a heart of warm cedarwood of three distinct origins: Virginia, the Atlas Mountains, and the Himalayas.

Re: Fragrance Junkie Central

@pocketvenus - This one sounds nice and no migraine triggers!  🥳  Think I'll try to track down a sample.

Re: Fragrance Junkie Central

I tried it today at the store and it smells delicious,  I'll be picking up a full size sometime soon🥰🤩

That's great, @lovelykatya !

Re: Fragrance Junkie Central

Gucci Flora GG is not one I’ve felt compelled to get, but this bottle speaks to me! And I LOVE gardenia, so if the gardenia and brown sugar is really stronger/strong enough, I may be tempted. I’ve kind of been on a fragrance low buy, especially for mass market and especially unless they are very long lasting. Not many except Kilian, Malle, Tom Ford seem to last all that well on me. Or if I find something intriguing while traveling and of course, no fun travel for a while! @pocketvenus

Re: Fragrance Junkie Central

@sister13 Maybe they will do the other Floras with these bottles??

Re: Fragrance Junkie Central

I just purchased the Eau de toilette thinking it was the original. I hope it's not super strong, I like a very light gardenia scent. I bought the toilette thinking it would be lighter. Wish me luck.

Re: Fragrance Junkie Central

@Thehouseofbaez hope it works out for you!! 🍀

Re: Fragrance Junkie Central

@Thehouseofbaez - Good luck!  Maybe you'll end up liking this scent.  🤞🍀💖

Re: Fragrance Junkie Central

@pocketvenus - This one sounds nice and the bottle is pretty, but gardenia is a migraine trigger.  Bummer!  😪

Re: Fragrance Junkie Central

@Titian06 Yes, it's odd to see what is essentially a flanker take an completely different bottle design. Since it's supposed to be stronger than the original, definitely one to avoid if you've sensitivities to certain notes!

Re: Fragrance Junkie Central

A couple new ones out by Jérôme Epinette

Edited to add Epinette is the nose behind many Atelier Colognes, a number of Byredos including the popular Bal d'Afrique, the rest of the Floral Street lines and niche lines such as Room 1050, Vilhelm Parfumerie 🙂

Ariana Grande's God is a Woman opens with notes of pear and ambrette that give way to a heart of Turkish rose and orris. Base notes of Madagascar vanilla and cedarwood ground the fragrance.

Floral Street, in collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum, has launched Sunflower Pop, a new fruity citrus fragrance inspired by Van Gogh's Sunflowers.

A citrus, fruity fragrance. Joy-bringing and sun-soaked. Bursting with rays of optimism. A masterpiece in a bottle. Yellow-tipped sunflowers from the brush of Van Gogh inspire this bright blend of fresh mandarin, bursts of sustainably sourced Calabrian bergamot, vegan honey accord, and a pop of bellini accord. Sunflower Pop is a vibrant, sumptuous citrus blend to bring to life the beauty and optimism of Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers'.

Additional notes include passion fruit, plum blossom, orris, musk and amber.

Re: Fragrance Junkie Central

@CatheRH - I hope you like it!  Let us know what you think!  💖💖💖

Re: Fragrance Junkie Central

@pocketvenus - Sunflower Pop sounds nice or maybe it's just the Van Gogh lover in me. 🤷‍♀️  Ariana Grande is giving me a migraine just reading the scent notes!  That is a definite pass. 😝

Re: Fragrance Junkie Central

Fenty is coming out with a fragrance, set to release Aug 10. Promo copy describes the scent as "a memory encapsulated into a fragrance," with notes of "sensual magnolia," "seductive musk," "vibrant fruit" and "spice." I wonder if it will smell like a Kilian since Rihanna's signature perfume is from that house. You can snag a sample now at the website.
