Winged liner placement?

Full disclosure: I cannot eyeliner. BUT, I'm trying. And I feel like I'm getting better at it, but something just seems... off. Am I drawing my tail at the right angle? Not connecting at the right angle? I feel like I'm following where everyone says to draw the lines from; maybe I'm just not used to it? Suggestions?

I only have eye makeup on, so ignore my dark circles and freckles. I practice pre-shower :)I only have eye makeup on, so ignore my dark circles and freckles. I practice pre-shower 🙂

RE: Winged liner placement?

Try making a line that is totally horizontal, instead of angled. This was a tip taught to me for hooded eyes to open them up more and make the wing look more natural. Good luck!

Re: RE: Winged liner placement?

Thanks! I'm going to keep trying 🤞🤞🤞

I screenshot Tati just know to see if I can copy her angles. (Not that I'm ever going to look like Tati 🙄.)

Re: Winged liner placement?

I would say the angle may be too high, the flick part of the line too thin and you could start the angle later (further from the inner corner, so that the eyelid crease doesn't interfere as much with the liner) if you don't mind elongating your eye shape a little bit.

If you want the point that high, you have a couple options. Instead of drawing a straight line, draw a curved one. This will allow the line to curve under the eyelid crease (or not be so absorbed into it) and the curve will look very cute and flirty.

You can keep the line straight and also fill in the line above the eyelid crease. This will create a thick and dramatic look - it will look very thick when your eyes are downcast.

The crease will interfere with the line the higher the point you choose so ***always check that the line is smooth when your eyes are open and relaxed.***

Hope this helps! Remember practice makes perfect ❤️

Re: Winged liner placement?

Excellent post, @pocketvenus! This would've been my "advice"/opinion as well.

@Susubee while I don't have monolids, my eyes are even more hooded than yours to the point where if I open my eyes very wide it might seem like I DO have monolids, so I don't do winged liner. I prefer a tiny flick instead, or just tightlining. Give your winged liner more practice and if you can't get it to work out, you might find that non-winged liner looks better! Or try using a dark eyeshadow for a softer winged eyeliner look (which I sometimes do). Good luck!

Re: Winged liner placement?

@k617  Thanks! My eyes are hooded and sound like yours, the lids are set pretty deep. It took me awhile to get the right shapes for a cat-eye!!! But my mother did a cat-eye look everyday with her monolids - I still remember, just one swoop per lid right in the middle with those fiddly little liquid eyeliner brushes that came in the caps (no pencils, pens or gel liners!) - and it never occurred to me that I would not be able to do otherwise when I grew up 😛

Re: Winged liner placement?

It does! Thank you! It seems maybe I need to go more triangle than curve to bring it back to the eyeline?

Yes, exactly... and on hooded eyes the triangle part will...

Yes, exactly... and on hooded eyes the triangle part will be mostly hidden when your eyes are open. Just keep the top line a bit curved Jetsons-style, like a sexy boomerang or something 😂

Re: Winged liner placement?

You're most welcome! I'm not sure I understand what you mean by bringing it back to the eyeline but curve will avoid the eye crease and straight will get right into the crease. Because of this, curve will generally last longer.

Re: Winged liner placement?

I have found that if you open your eyes a little while you do it , t helps. Do. The eyeliner to how your eye flows.

RE: Winged liner placement?

Hey Susubee, although I can’t tell for sure where to exactly place your line, I have the same issue as you. I guess by looking at your pics you have hooded eyelids right? I do too, and having hooded eyes for me is almost impossible to get that perfect cat eye looking because of the shape of my eyes. I heard that when placing the liner you should try to work it more from the angle where your bottom lashes start and bring it up from there not closing your eye to kind of see where your line is gonna start folding if that makes sense. A couple of tips is watching tutorials maybe on YouTube specifically for that type of shape and another thing that I’m thinking of doing is to schedule a free session at my local Sephora so they can teach me all the tricks when trying to do a cat eye. I would say if it is accessible to you to do the same thing definitely take advantageous that.

Totally agree with YouTube tutorials. I often suggest ChristinaMUA. She's awesome and has legit hooded eyes. I find that some ppl say it's a tutorial for hooded eyes and only have a slight hood. 😬

Ooo. I don't think I've found her Channel yet! I'll have to check it out; I'm always liking for new channels! Thank you 😊

RE: Winged liner placement?

I have hooded eyes as well and winged liner is so difficult to do. I find it either accentuates my hood or just looks sort of not right. I haven’t found any tricks that really help me

RE: Winged liner placement?

I honestly have set my mind to not do the cat eye cause is just impossible lol I just go for a tight line or I just go with the normal line without wing, but I’m gonna give the class a try and see just for curiosity! Anyway you know our struggle 😂

Re: RE: Winged liner placement?

@Ninij87 I always just tightline, too!

But I'm a crafty/technical person, and II'm curious - *eyeliners:how do they work???*

Re: RE: Winged liner placement?

All my best makeup techniques needed reverse-engineering 😂

Re: Winged liner placement?

@Susubee  I don't know what I'm doing, but when I don't like my liner placement, it's usually because I need to shorten the tail or thicken it and/or shorten it.  Maybe one of those suggestions would work for you.  But, again, I don't know what I'm doing.

Re: Winged liner placement?

Me neither! Hooray for not knowing what we're doing together! 😂IMG_7577.GIF

My best (only) tip is to start from the outside instead. Look in the mirror and make a tiny dot where you want the wing to end, then draw to connect to your lash line and fill it in. This way when you close/open your eyes as you work, you always have a "target". Some people can really master the one-stroke flick, but for the rest of us mortals this comes out almost as good.
