Eyeshadow novice

I LOVE eyeshadow but am nearly hopeless at applying it.  I end up with no crease definition or look like Harley Quinn, there’s no in between. 😬 I’ll usually sweep one color across my eyelid and call it a day but I really want to get better. 

What are must-have brushes to pull off a great smoky eye? Any tutorials you’d recommend? Also, should I really be layering the shadow on for it to show up in pics vividly?

@Cartalwaysfull @Sephora has YouTube videos on how to do a Smokey eye. Or you can also watch Desi Perkins or Jaclyn Hill. They have tutorials on their YouTube channel and brushes to have in your collection. I personally think you need an eyeshadow brush, blending brush and smudger brush.
