Eyeshadow: Muddy Vs. Baddie

I own a couple Urban Decay palettes and use good brushes. Even though I follow the right steps (I've been watching videos and doing my makeup for yearsss) my eye shadow always turns out muddy and not very contrasted or defined like how I want it. You know when you see those 2014 vs 2017 makeup comparisons by people on Instagram? I'm still stuck in late 2014. Someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong!
