Does anybody have some tips for making the perfect cat eye? I've been trying to do it for a while but never have made to my satisfaction.

Re: Does anybody have some tips for making the perfect cat eye? I've been trying to do it for a while but never have made to my satisfaction.

I honestly use a light eyeshadow and an angled brush to outline my wing first sometimes and then go over it with my Em Cosmetics brush tip eyeliner (because I prefer brush tips and it dries down matte). If I mess up with the light eyeshadow, I just wipe it away and do it again until I think it's right. That's pretty much how I learned how to do winged liner, anyhow.

I personally love to use the Kat Von D tattoo liner in trooper (but of course you can use any color you want) to outline the wing and then fill it in with a quill liner, like the Revlon Color stay. I'd been struggling for the longest time with my winged liner but then I discovered both that trick and another one: always start with the flick that's going to make your cat eye, following the natural shape of your eye.  pictorial.png

Also, I NEVER recommend putting tape on your face. >.<;; If you need an aid like that just use a card or a folded piece of paper.

my favorite eyeliner is the clinique pretty easy liquid eyeliner. it stays on but is easy to fix or take off if you make a mistake. i do a very very thin line across my eye, then do a super thin line going out towards my hairline from the corner of my eye. i then make another line, pressing harder back towards my eye, leaving the end very thin, and i fill it in. much love!!

@MissPuff Gel pot liner!!! Great suggestion! I found one in my stash from buxom that's probably a billion years old and should be retired. I'll look into the L'Oréal and put the Top Ford on my wish list! Thanks, dollface 👀💖🦄

I preferred the stila eyeliner. I went to my local Sephora, and they used a pencil with a liquid eyeliner over it. I have one hooded eyelid so I have to make the line in more of an "s" shape for that eye or you can't see the line. I have tried every liquid eyeliner there is and I always go back to Stila. Good luck!

So I always recommend my friends that are starting out to start with a felt tip brush like the Kat Von D liquid liner, or the Sephora long lasting liquid liner! (There's 2) it will help with the sharp lines!

The worst is having two great razor sharp tails...that don't match each other. Sigh.

I've got a few tricks that I rely on to help in the eternal quest for perfect, matching wings. If I'm not going to be wearing much shadow, I draw the wing first (liquid or gel with a fine, pointy tip brush) and then, to get the sharpest lines, I'll clean up or swipe away at the edges with a damp q-tip (regular or pointed work). I find this gives me the thinnest fade out possible and works if you've got a heavy hand, the q-tip wipes away the excess. You don't want a wet q-tip, just moist; usually putting the q-tip in my mouth for a second works just fine (yes, this is gross and I would never do this for someone else's eyes). I don't use make-up remover because it leaves a bit of film and makes it impossible to add more liner/shadow.

If I've got a lot of eyeshadow that I don't want to mess up, I'll use an angled brush in black shadow to draw an outline (sort of like in the video), then fill in and darken with the actual eyeliner. Currently, I find I have the best control and results with gel liner and a nice sharp brush, but if I'm in a rush, liquid will do. Pencils are not great because it's quite hard to get that sharp tip (even with the q-tip trick).

@MissPuff  Yhese are great tips. Which liner do you recommend? I've tried Stila liquid liner, Kat Von D Tattoo liner  and Marc Jacobs gel liner. The Stila literally worked great on my hand but showed up Not. At. All. on my eyes. The KAt Von D showed, but was thin and not that super crisp black line. It wsa literally see through. I have oily lids so ....... THe onlt felt liner that eer worked for me was Agnes B> I can get nice crisp lines with the Sephora colorful 24 hr liquid liners but cannot draw a wing to save my life!!!  #firstworldproblems

Re: Does anybody have some tips for making the perfect cat eye? I've been trying to do it for a while but never have made to my satisfaction.

@mermadelove I used to use the Stila Liquid Liner forever, gone through at least 4 or 5 pens, but you're totally right, it's a thinner black than some other pens. I had to be really quick when drawing my lines, otherwise it was impossible to layer. My current obsession liquid liner is the tom ford eye defining pen, it's absurdly expensive (in my opinion) so it's definitely a splurge, but it is kinda awesome...double ended for a thick or thin line.

To make up for that, my favorite, budgeproof, blackest black gel liner is...L'oreal Infallible 24hr Laquer Liner, comes in a little pot with a crappy brush. Drugstore 🙂 Don't use the brush, it's garbage, but the liner...HG for me. Better than Bobbi Brown, MAC, it's probably just the same formulation as the Lancome gel pot liner. And I think it's like $10? Maybe less?

I recommend a combination of everyone's answers, honestly.

I wear glasses because I'm incredibly nearsighted, so I adore the Sephora tape (that said, just purchase unbranded paper medical tape if you go through it a lot). It's something that makes it goof proof for me.

I also recommend watching as many tutorials as you can.

Most importantly, take some time with your eyes- what's your eye shape? Are your eyes symmetrical? Brows? Getting to know the tiny differences (for instance my brow hairs naturally extend longer on my right eye) can allow you to correct the look so it appears the same on each eye. Plus, knowing more about your eye shape helps with eyeshadow application in general.

When I first started I used tape to line up my eyes to get an even look (Sephora even sells tape for this). I also find using a liquid liner with a felt tip or bristle works well for me over using an angled brush. I say practice when you have time and be patient.

So THAT's what tape is for!!! THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!!! Because....1) I honestly had no idea what on earth the tape was used for and 2) I really thought everyone was freehanding those crisp, perfect cut crease and cat eye looks! I'm a nurse so I'm SURE I have paper tape around here somewhere. SO gonna practice! LOVE BT!!!

Artist brushes! I went and bought a set of artist brushes (Master's Touch) and I'm going to tell you the bet one I found for doing any kind of winged eyeliners in the Angled Brush . It's way cheaper than buying makeup brushes, and works just as well. Plus another great tip is to use the same brush to smooth out the unevenness after your line is applied.

Oh I'm glad I found this thread.  I'm having a hard time getting a nice cat eye too.  I'll check out the video.  Does anyone have a favorite liner they use that doesn't skip?

It's for a holiday look but the liner would be perfect for any occasion 🙂
