My face is dehydrated & uneven with a rough texture, please help

My skin is extremely dehydrated and dull lately. I use a clarisonic every night but no matter how much I exfoliate it never seems to look anything but rough. Large pores on my cheeks, lines on my forehead & an uneven looking texture all over. My skin is extremely sensitive and is frequently irritated on top if all this. My moisturizer does nothing for the dryness & my makeup looks awful sitting on the roughness. I use cetaphil face wash, cerave moisturizer spf 30 & MyChelle hyaluronic acid serum at night

I'm only 28, please help!

This was so helpful thanks

Re: My face is dehydrated & uneven with a rough texture, please help

Girl, you’re over exfoliating your skin TO DEATH!!! Do not use your Clarisonic everyday! It’s drying you out and sensitizing your skin. Your barrier is totally compromised. Skip to a cream based cleanser, something with apricot or jojoba oil to nourish while it cleanses and ABSOLUTELY sulfate free. Thicker moisturizer with hyloronic acid.

Re: My face is dehydrated & uneven with a rough texture, please help

I had the same problem actually. I started using pure mango butter, and it actually toned my face out well while moisturizing it! I also use Olay for all my moisturizers.

Re: My face is dehydrated & uneven with a rough texture, please help

Hello!!! My skin is so so sooooooo dry. UGH its the worst. I found a product recommended by a friend that literally changed my life...Josie Maran Aragon Oil...I use it overnight and its like it gives me a nightly facial. I wake up and my skin is so smooth and supple its almost like i don't need a daily moisturizer!!! I use it on my hands and cuticles when they are dry, and also on my hairline at night to prevent flaky dandruff! I want to find Josie and HUG HER for letting me have this product in my life.

Re: My face is dehydrated & uneven with a rough texture, please help

A couple things that really helped me was only washing my face once a day.  I only wash at night.  I also wait until after I wash and condition my hair so none of the oils get on my face.  I stopped using morrocan oil on my hair as it was getting on my face when I slept.

in the morning I quickly rinse my face with water in the morning and immediately put Clinique moisture surge lotion on.  That is it.  I use my clarisonic only once a week.

You might think about using a retinol cream before bed.

also, only introduce your skin to one new item per week. This will make it easier to pinpoint items that are causing irritation.

Re: My face is dehydrated & uneven with a rough texture, please help

hi Haley,

i saw on a post you wrote a while back saying you had dehydrate and dull skin. I'm going through the same thing right now, with very dry, flakey skin with uneven texture and large pores. Basically the skin looks very aged and I'm only 25 years old. Did you ever find a solution to your problem? Any advice is appreciated!

Re: My face is dehydrated & uneven with a rough texture, please help

100% agree on cutting back on the Clarisonic. (for anyone who is looking for an answer since the OP hopefully figured something out 2.5 years ago when she asked originally!)

I have really sensitive skin and even with the sensitive brush heads, the Clarisonic easily overwhelms my skin. Even just with a light touch, it's just not worth it for me.

My guess is your skin is just looking for a little more love!

Re: My face is dehydrated & uneven with a rough texture, please help

I too agree on cutting back on the clearsonic. I usually use it 2 times a week at night. Usually Thursday and Thursday (easier for me to remember). Though this product line is QUITE pricey I have used Eminence Artctic Berry Peptide Radiance Cream when my face is so dry it hurts. It really helps and FAST!  It can b a bit thick u can add a few drops of water to it. Oh and it is all natural!  Smells super yummy too.

Re: My face is dehydrated & uneven with a rough texture, please help

I completely agree with @etscore1 and @Lilly5454  - I used to use my Clarisonic every day and didn't realize it was too much until I started introducing other exfoliating products into my routine. I don't use the Clarisonic anymore these days.

Also second the @Lilly5454's recommendation for Eminence Arctic Berry Peptide Radiance Cream - it's amazing!  My skin loves it in the winter.  I was first introduced to the Arctic Berry Cream when I purchased the Eminence Arctic Berry Peel & Peptide Illuminating System (it's an at home peel kit) - that peel did wonders for my skin!  Eminence products are on the pricey side, but I've found them to be worth the money.

Re: My face is dehydrated & uneven with a rough texture, please help

@myinsidevoice :-). Another item I forgot to mention is Eminence facial recovery oil. This product has really been worth every penny and then some. U can use it alone or add a few drops to your nighttime moisturizer. Also any of Eminence moisturizers can b worn overnight as a mask also. As my niece says; “Supersonic Hydration”. I am an Eminence junky,  (when I can afford it) I have used every single item so I am more than happy to share any and all insight I have. One last thing I would not buy any of the products from Amazon. They r usually fakes.

Re: My face is dehydrated & uneven with a rough texture, please help

Right there with ya, @Lilly5454!  My skin loves Eminence products; my wallet...not so much. Ha!  Pricey but effective.  Every so often, I find that certain authorized retailers will offer a promo code for Eminence products and I stock up on my faves and try out a new product or two as well!  Will add the Facial Recovery Oil to my list.  Thank you for the recommendation!

Re: My face is dehydrated & uneven with a rough texture, please help

Let me know if you try something new and love it!  Where do u find the promo codes?

Re: My face is dehydrated & uneven with a rough texture, please help

Will do @Lilly5454!  Right now, I've really been liking the Rosehip Triple C + E Firming Oil.  My skin is terribly sensitive to Vitamin C products but I've found that it responds well to the Eminence oil.  I have purchased my Eminence products from the website for lovelyskin and from time to time, they will send me a sample of a new Eminence product (this most recent time it was a sample of the acai exfoliating pad) and that sample comes with a coupon code for Eminence products (you don't have to purchase the sample product).  20% off with code: EMINPEELA - I think it should still be valid if you want to use it.

Re: My face is dehydrated & uneven with a rough texture,...

Oh dear, I did not realize this was a zombie thread from 2012!

Hello, I'm not a skincare expert, but I would definitely recommend that you cut your use of the Clarisonic back.  For some people, even with the sensitive brush, it is just too much stimulation and it sounds like it may be triggering inflammation and irritation.  Also, some people tolerate better a chemical exfoliation (using acids, etc.) vs the manual exfoliation of the brush.

Since you are using gentle products otherwise for cleanser and moisture, I would suggest that you immediately cut back use of the Clarisonic to once per week, keep with the other products and perhaps add a hydrating serum or oil.  You may also want to look into a hydrating sleeping mask, or hydrating mask and use it 2-3 times/week.  Try adding one product at a time, to see whether you see improvement, worsening or no change.  If you are seeing improvement, you could try adding the Clarisonic back at 2-3x/week, and then monitor to see how your skin reacts.

Indeed, make sure you are drinking lots of water, and keep a moisturizer with you during the day to apply.  Until your skin gets back in balance, I don't think you should assume that it can go all day without re-applying moisturizer.

Good luck, I know how frustrating this is, but it does take some patience to establish a good routine and a lot of trial and error to find what works for you.  I've been reading a lot of skincare threads here on BT, which has given me a new appreciation for really taking the time to pay special attention to the needs of my skin on a day-to-day basis to get it looking good. Keep us posted!

Hi! did you end up fixing it?

Re: My face is dehydrated & uneven with a rough texture, please help

Hi there,

Well I can somewhat relate to your skin condition and I myself was fedup with using all sorts of things and products and techniques till I found this nice product.

Lancome genifique youth activating concentrate.

I use it after washing my face and exfloting it a little then applying the concentrate, tapping with my finger tips under eye, cheeks, sides of my nose and then around my lips. then the rest of the face n neck. I take about 4 drops on 1 each cheek, 1 on my forhead, and one on my chin.

After than I use Bare Minerals Purely Nourishing Cream for Dry Skin (I got a free sample from sephora and so far it has lasted me more than 2 weeks)

It has made wonders and changed the look and feel of my skin.
Please do visit Sephora and ask a consulantant there to recommend you treatments and then get a sample to try out before buying it out!

All the best!

Re: My face is dehydrated & uneven with a rough texture, please help

Hi Haley! First of all, let me acknowledge how frustrating and upsetting it is to deal with multiple skin problem and find zero relief (I've been there). But there's hope! That said, there are several things that helped me.

For inner skincare, I agree with fabme about lots of water (aim for half your body weight, more if possible). Along with the increased H2O, you can adjust your diet by eliminating processed foods, simple carbs, sugar (the worst for skin) and alcohol (if you must drink set a limit and reach for wine at least it has antioxidants).

Add various veggies (dark leafy greens are great for the skin) and low glycemic fruits, lean proteins (fish and poultry) and good fats aka MUFAs (monounsaturatedfatty acids) such as olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocados and dark cholocate (55% cacao or higher). I incorporated a few supplements, since it's tough to get all the nutrition we need through food! I take collagen supplements, hyaluric acid, biotin (10,000mcg) and Vit C (2000mg) all supporting healthy skin, hair and nails from the inside.

As for outer skincare, I found an amazing aesthetician who has changed my skin (and life). I started out with more frequent visits to get faster results but now I go less frequently and focus on daily skincare at home to maintain/continue improvement. The facials are all natural which include a peel (lactic and glycolic acids) followed by a manual microderm (using a handheld tool rather than a machine which weakens collagen and elastin). Her facials evened my skintone and texture!

At home, I use a gentle scrub (Kiehl's Skin Brightening Exfoliator) 2X/week in the shower with my Clarisonic. I also do biweekly masks. I rotate between Murad Skin Intesive C Radiance peel, Boscia Luminizing Black Mask and Ren Glycolic-Lactic Mask. To restore moisture, I follow with Caudalie moisture mask or Origins Drink Up mask (I leave it on for 20-30 min to get super results).

Other creams that provide deep hydration are Amore Pacific Hydra-gel, Murad Hydro-dynamic, and Sephora night cream (it heals the skin overnight). They are gel-based which are not heavy, sticky or greasy. To relieve redness and irritation, try FAB redness relief (it works). I also found relief from very dry skin (burning, itchy, flaking skin) with Garnier Moisture Rescue both as a mask and moisturizing gel that sinks into thirsty skin. It's light, smells fresh (like aloe) and feels amazing!

I hope these tips didn't overwhelm you. Choose only a few products and stick with the same routine for a few months (switching can throw off the pH balance in skin) and eventually you'll discover beautiful healthy skin. Be patient it takes time, less is more. Good luck!

Sounds like your moisturizer isn't cutting it.  Also, I have seen hyaluronic acid serum dry people out a great deal. I would consiter looking for a moisturizer to use night and day (but that is labled as night, these are ritcher), specifically one that is advertised for "mature" skin even though you are only 28.  These tend to have higher quality ingredients.  By this I don't mean a anti wrinkle cream, but a nice rich night cream you can use night and day.  Maybe use the clarisonic with a non-drying clenser as well.

I also had my dry and irritated skin but then I read in a magazine that with dry skin sometimes washing your face can strip it of its natural moisture so I started washing my face only at night time.... This seem to really help me, I used any gentle drugstore brand..And in the morning I would only wet my face with water then allowed it to airdry before applying moisturizer...Ole Hendrickson did wonders for me plus it had SPF.....Also fresh rose petal mask is OMG amazing! It brought the moisture back to my skin after two applications...I highly recommend it. Also for makeup try a foundation instead of powder sometimes powders make your skin look even drier.... nars foundation powder is really good you apply like powder but it looks and feel like foundation..It almost has a velvety feel...Plus it gives full coverage.

I agree with the previous post regarding water- sometimes change has to come from within 🙂 It's also a good idea to put on moisturizer while your skin is still damp.

Maybe you need to shake up your routine a little. My skin started looking dull with enlarged pores when I got into my late 30's, and none of my regular tricks were working (mechanical exfoliation, masks, homemade remedies). That's when I discovered the chemical exfoliators. Philosophy Help Me did wonders for my skin: it evened out my skin, got rid of the roughness, and I could continue with my regular day moisturizers.
