Post in Dry Skin

Extremely dry skin in desperate need of a good water-based moisturizer.

My skin (especially chin area) was feeling rough lately but I just figured it was the change in weather however, I recently had a facial and was told that my skin was extremely dry.  I would appreciate any suggestions for a good water-based moisturizer that could help me revitalize my face.  Thanks!

I would try First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream which has a nice whipped, non-greasy texture.  It is a thick, rich, emollient product that hydrates deep down with exceptional penetration. This cream is for anyone with severely dry, scaly skin due to harsh winter weather, aggressive cosmetic treatments, or any of the following conditions:  atopic dermatitis, irritant eczema, allergic eczema, and keratosis pilaris. With the help of colloidal oatmeal, shea butter, soothing eucalyptus oil, and ceramides, Ultra Repair Cream provides immediate relief and visible improvement for distressed skin. The FAB Antioxidant Booster defends skin from free radical damage and the cream deeply hydrates with exceptional penetration, providing immediate relief and visible improvement. The cream is immediately absorbed into the skin and can be used all over the body and on the face.  It is safe for even the most sensitive skin and it's petroleum-free. It contains Colloidal Oatmeal, the only FDA-approved, OTC ingredient for eczema.  It's allergy-tested, dermatologist-recommended, and contains FAB Antioxidant Booster to combat free radicals.  You can find it here:

I recently used the product recommended - Ultra Repair Cream - when I did some major damage to the side of my nose with a pore strip.  The skin actually looked badly sunburned and blistered.  I had a sample and decided to try it and it worked exceptionally well.  I bought a small tube to keep on hand, I was that impressed.

The most effective ultra-hydrating moisturizer I've ever used is Bobbi Brown "Hydrating Face Cream." (Sephora Product Page) This is a light moisturizing cream that leaves skin healthy and prepared for a seamless makeup application. This rich formula instantly hydrates, steadily releasing moisture, skin conditioners, and nutrients throughout the day. This is a great cream to use in the morning to ensure that dry skin won't be a problem for you throughout your day. For maximum moisturizing results, pair this product with Bobbi Brown "Hydrating Intense Night Cream." (Sephora Product Page) This is a concentrated cream that boosts skin's ability to recharge and rehydrate during the nightly repair process. This luxurious night cream contains an enriched mineral water blend to hydrate, balance, and revive skin. It contains white birch extract to maintain elastin while promoting the natural repair of environmental damage. I use both these products during the winter when my skin gets really dry, and they work wonders! They are expensive, but since they're more effective than any other moisturizing creams I've tried (and I've tried LOTS) I think the results are well worth the price. I hope this helps you! To find a water based one, look at the ingredient list....

To find a water based one, look at the ingredient list.  The first few ingredients listed should be water or water related.  Marine ingredients may also be benefical.  Read the boxes carefully.  Some of the online only products can probably be tried at the higher end department stores where the skin line is carried.  Can always try it in the stores and then buy at Sephora for the points later.

In addition, consider a toner/lotion designed for moisture re-balance.  It should improve the effectiveness of the moisturizer.  There are also serums that may help as well.  It may seem that adding these steps might be time consuming but I've found the the benefits of improved skin to outweigh the additional few minutes in my skincare routine.

I consider myself to be very dry (eyes, hair, lips, dry climate on top of things).  Unfortunately, the majority of products offered at Sephora just do not cut it as far as moisturizing goes.  The closest one was Guerlain's Super Aqua series.  It is expensive and quite fragrant.  However if you do have a high end department store that carries it, try it there.  This was probably the only counter that also provided a free sample without apprehension (makes me appreciate Sephora's free samples even more so).

La Mer would be the next recommendation because it was another product that wasn't face pulling.

Shu Uemura has a water based moisturizing line called Depsea.  If in the US (mainland), it will take about two weeks to ship or can be picked at select Holt Renfrew department stores in Canada.  It does meet the criteria.  I also like their cleansing oils (A/I for dry skin) and the depsea mists for pick me up moisture throughout the day.  If the shipping wait time seems too long, try this one if and/or when everything else does not seem to work.  If still curious, call or e-mail their customer service.  They have always been very helpful and courteous each time.  Cannot say enough good things about this line.

Skyn Iceland is another good brand.  Although this one only tends to be a summer time moisturizer as it falls flat in the wintertime on my skin.

Maybe look into Benefit?  I'll have to look at the ingredient list the next time I am in a Sephora.  Others that I came across (probably not everything) that had water as the first ingredient:  Laura Mercier, CaudalieAmore Pacific might also be worthwhile (they have other brands in this company that are more affordable).

Lifestyle wise, if you are not drinking enough water, it helps tremendously.  Watch alcohol intake as it tends to dehydrate tremendously (always pair it with water if this tends to be the case).

This is a long entry but I hope this helps you find the right product for your skin.

In addition to a new moisturizer, don't forget to drink more water and less caffeine!!! When I was a teenager, my skin was so dry, I had to use COLD CREAM to wash my face.  No kidding. A teenager using cold cream. The past 5-10 years since I've been drinking water and completely cut out caffeine, besides feeling like a different person, my skin is normal and in the best condition it's ever been in.

I've had facials, where the person told me my skin had a lot of dead skin in the surface, so I know what you mean. Why don't you ask your facialist what's a good brand for you? Since the person may know your skin a bit more than a new dermatologist, you may have better luck. I'm not sure what to recommend you because it is going to be summer time soon so I wouldn't want to suggest a product that might make your skin turn oily. Good luck!
