Dry skin

What are the best ingredients to look for in a moisturizer for dry skin?

Re: Dry skin

@Suseecool  I’ll list a few that come to mind. This isn’t an exhaustive list: I’m sure I’m forgetting a few items. And I’m excluding ingredients that target specific skin issue like hyperpigmentation, redness, etc.

Occlusives to keep water in your skin:

  • Petrolatum
  • Squalane
  • Mineral oil
  • Shea butter
  • Dimethicone

Humectants to draw water into your skin:

  • Hyaluronic acid in various forms (many products use its salt form, sodium hyaluronate)
  • PCA or sodium PCA
  • Polyglutamic acid
  • Peptides
  • Carrageenan (if you’re not sensitive or allergic to algae)
  • Lanolin (if you’re not sensitive or allergic to it)
  • Glycerin
  • Honey
  • Urea
  • Trehalose

Emollients to soften your skin; some may also help prevent water loss:

  • Sunflower oil
  • Safflower oil
  • Argan oil
  • Jojoba
  • Rose hip oil
  • Grapeseed oil

Other beneficial ingredients that build up your skin’s moisture barrier:

  • Ceramides
  • Cholesterol
  • Omega fatty acids like linoleic acid
