Store credit for online return with receipt within 30 day window, can't use online?

Hello, I received an online order that ended up being a duplicate of a gift I received. My item was ordered 12/27. I returned it in store on 1/11, with an original receipt (which is confirmed and noted on the return receipt). My refund was issued as a merchandise credit, which at the time I didn't question since I intended to place an online order shortly for the full amount of the refund. However, I've since learned that the store credit card cannot be used online, and the only items I wish to purchase are only available online. Had I known about the restriction on the card I would not have returned the item in store, and would have simply returned by mail to get the online Sephora.com credit. But, according to what I have learned here, I'm now stuck with an in-store credit card that I cannot use or exchange, because the in-store employee did not note the restriction on card use. What are my options here? I'm extremely frustrated that this policy is not made known, especially when being handed a store credit card without any explanation and apparently without any way to reverse or correct the error, and I'm really wary about ever purchasing from Sephora online or in-store in the future.
