Scratched off pin number on gift card

I purchased two gift cards and when we scratched to get the pin numbers, they scratched off as well and we couldn't read them. We live a ways away from a physical store. Customer service told me I have to go back to the retailer where I purchased them. Has anyone had luck with this? I am not confident this will go anywhere. I am also nervous to scratch the new ones and have the same issue happen. Seems like an issue with the manufacturer who makes the gift cards.

This just happened to me, too. Do you have any updates on your issues? Were they able to resolve it or did you go to the Sephora store itself to redeem it?
