Return but exchange with cheaper price?

Hello to whomever reads this,

 

So in the past I had purchase a starlit powder by makeup forever that I thought was a blush highlight colour but was actually a bronze because each powder pot had starlit powder as the colour name and you would not be able to tell which colour was what unless opening the packaging. Since I did not know this I picked up the wrong colour since the display colour I was testing was switched to where it should have been in front of the representing merchandise. Anyways, long story short, by the time I go in to exchange it the next day I had lost the receipt and sephora worker told me I should go online to return it since I did not have a receipt and it would be very inconvenient. After leaving because it made sense and I did not want to be a bother I struggled very hard trying to figure out a return from in store purchase. I was not able to do this because of time I just did not have due to work, college, and the convenience, so by the time I finally racked up enough courage to go back and request an exchange no matter what because the bronze colour was impossible to use with my complexion and the 60 day policy for return was getting close, the worker instead offered to exchange my product with the blush highlight colour I wanted but at the lowest price found online sephora, which is what I did happy to get a colour that worked, but price was only 4$ less than my original purchase. Still, happy to get what I originally wanted I paid for the right starlit powder. But here comes the strange part that I did not understand, which is, after purchasing my second product I had to return the first one without reimbursement at all. So my question is, if this is the case, I can never exchange without a physical receipt how do I get electronic receipts online from in store purchase? Also I have recently purchased a lipstick in store and am afraid to go back to pay for an entire different purchase and relinquish my first purchase without reimbursement because then at the end of the day I would have paid for two lipsticks but only have one. I feel like this system of exchange pay because of no receipt is in a way extortion because I also had to return my first product I paid for but for a second one but at a lesser price but not get reimbursed for the first product. Please also help explain why this is also a thing.

Shopped at Sephora Inside JCP at Honey Creek Mall, Terre Haute IN (only because it is close to the college I attend out of state)

I'd try emailing customer service about that, it seems kind of weird and not right. I've had to do something similar when i ordered something online but i got reimbursed for the one i returned and then had to re-order it. (i had bought it online and went in store to return and they helped me through the handheld registers.)
