Online return to jcp Sephora

I had to order an item online as it was sold out in store. I bought the sample size while I waited for it to return to stock and get shipped. Meanwhile I found out the item just wasn’t right for my hair. I’ve never returned anything in the long time I’ve been a customer so I looked over the policy and saw I could take my online purchase to the store for a refund to my credit card. I go Into my local Sephora which is a Sephora inside JCP. The first employee told me she could accept my return but only for merchandise credit which is only good to use inside the Sephora JCP store only. When I asked Why she said it was because they are a “free standing store” I declined the offer as this store is a bit away and as of right now the shelves are very bare. I went back to the car and looked again to see where it states I can take the item to a free standing store for a refund to my CC as long as I used a CC. I returned and was greeted by a different employee and I showed her where it doesn’t show anywhere that I wouldn’t get a normal refund. She told me the other girl “used the wrong words” and they aren’t a free standing store but more of a partner to Sephora and that their systems just don’t allow it. Still cannot find anywhere on the website where it states this info. As of right now my county went back on lockdown and I dont have access to a printer. The closest Sephora store not inside a JCP is a little over 2 hours away. Is this correct info regarding online returns ?

I haven’t heard from anyone and my item is about to be outside the 30 day return policy. Furthermore I found On JCP website that they do indeed accept online returns for original method of money. Please help resolve why my only store is an exception to this policy. Thank you so much for your help in this matter
