Shrinkage

Hi y’all I’m new here and my name is Daisha. I’m really considering relaxing my hair. My natural hair is very fine and it shrinks regardless of what I put in it 😭 I haven’t found any stylist that knows how to work with my hair and it’s becoming too much for me to maintain. I haven’t had any success with booking model jobs for my natural hair. I don’t think there’s a need for my type of natural hair by hair companies. I am sad about this because I would have loved to represent others with my hair type. Does anyone have any tips? Should I wait it out a bit before relaxing or just make that change?

Re: Shrinkage

Hey there

I also have fine natural hair.

I've had only 3 stylists who I entrusted my hair with, and not at the same time lol. I completely understand what you're saying.

Most say to use wigs or braids...but braids completely break my hair so I can't use them...and wigs also break my edges. Besides that, they just don't look very natural on me like they do on others.

What I do is do keratin smoothing treatments. If you find a stylist who does it, try it. My hair can go from curly to straight more easily. It gives you a relaxer feel but isn't a relaxer. When you wash your hair, its curly again but the curls are not so tight. Here are a couple of pics of me with straight and curly hair, both with keratin. Google it and you'll see what I mean.

Re: Shrinkage

My advice to you before relaxing your hair you should wait a bit and try different natural ways to maintain your hair without damaging your natural hair you can get a blow out with treatment that can make your hair be straight for couple weeks and ask for it to be silk pressed based on the length of your hair when stretched out it will definitely have a good volume to it.when washed you can also used shea butter to keep in moisture.

Welcome

@dasdaisha!  Oof, it's rough not having a knowledgeable stylist.  I can't decide what to do because I'm not you, but the length of your hair is crazy!  I'd wait.  You could always try wigs and other protective styles to change up your hair without using a relaxer, the latter which will likely damage your hair.

I'm transitioning from a relaxer to natural , btw, and my old hairdresser became an issue on her own.  I loved how straight my hair was with a relaxer, but now a year out, and it's thicker than it's ever been.  At the same time, it's also tedious to deal with, and I have to relearn my hair and what works.  I've debated going back and I'm trying not to, but I want convenience.  So, everything for me is a basically trial and error.  New products do come out they do often, hence why I say wait.  Not to mention, you never know what's going to be trendy.
