Kat Von creme contour patchy/muddy?

So I’m starting to get more into makeup and want to get the hang of contouring. I normally use powder but recently purchased Kat Von D’s creme contour kit. I’ve tried both spice and woodland but they looked just muddy and patchy. I have combination skin,let my moisturizer set for a couple hours,used primer and a thin layer of liquid foundation,used my fingers on the areas I want to contour then blended it out with a small synthetic brush. It’s a pricey pallete and I see so many great reviews about it so I figured I’m doing something wrong. Any tips? Thanks in advance!
