Post in Combination Skin

I am confused about my skin :(

What skin type is this? Overall it has an oily feel but when I put on any makeup it looks really cracked and scaly, and that is using a liquid foundation. I also have an issue with my pores looking too large. I don't know what to fix it with or what makeup to wear. I am so frustrated trying to figure it out. Smiley Sad Please help. (if it makes a difference, I am very fair with neutral undertone.) Thank you

Maybe the problem is not with your skin, maybe is the foundation, you should try another foundation and see what happens.

But you may need a regular exfoliation also, if your skin is just oily and not acne-prone, you may do a regular exfoliation two or three times a week. Exfoliation is very important to keep away oil excess and remove dead cells that may be causing that your skin is scaly and cracked, you should also try this.

Also your skin may be dehydrated, you need to do something, like drink many many water daily, and I also heard that for combination/oily skin types that are dehydrated is good using an hydrating mask once a week.

But obviously, your skin is oily, especially if your pores are large and if you also have oily feeling on your cheeks, not only in your t-zone.

Try all this, I hope i've helped a bit.

I second eveaurie: It sounds like you have oily skin and need to do regular exfoliating treatments. I myself have combination skin ( oily t zone and dry cheeks) and I exfoliate about twice a week and do a mask to purify once a week. I also make sure to use a moisturizer that's formulated for my skin type.

Exfoliation helps oily skin break out less and eliminates flakiness on dry skin.

Make sure you moisturize with an oil free moisturizer since you have oily skin. It will help combat the flakiness and will actually prevent your skin from overproducing oil to compensate for lack of hydration. Hope that helps!

Here is a simple way to determine what skin type you have:
A single piece of tissue can help you figure out your skin type.  Wash and dry your face and leave it unmoisturized for three hours.  Then press a tissue to your face and remove it.  You have normal skin if no oil comes of on the tissue and your face doesn’t feel tight or flaky.  You have dry skin if no oil comes off but your face feels dry, tight or flaky.  You have oily skin if there’s oil from your nose, forehead and cheeks.  You have combination skin if there’s oil from your nose and forehead (the areas of your face with the most oil glands) but not your cheeks.

That’s a basic, simple test to determine your skin type, but it really does work.

I think you may want to try a foundation primer to address the enlarged pores and overall skin texture.  A very good foundation primer to disguise enlarged pores is NARS Skin Smoothing Face Prep which is designed to minimize the appearance of fine lines and pores with just one application.  You can find it at:

I hope this helps you. Smiley Happy
