I’m trying to decide between which vitamin c serum I should get? Drunk elephant or tatcha? This is my first time using vitamin c serum.

Drunk Elephant all the way. I have tried other Vitamin C serums and I keep coming back to this one because it really helps fade all my acne scars! DRUNK ELEPHANT - C-Firma™ Vitamin C Day Serum

Both are really great products! It really depend on what you are looking for. The drunk elephant vitamin C is a great serum for day time! What is cool about the tatcha vitamin C is that it can also be used at night! So if you are looking for a vitamin C serum you can use any time that might be a better choice for you! ☺️

Tatcha’s Violet-C Brightening Serum has some ingredients that can work exactly as claimed – but some not-so-good ingredients make this a product we just can’t recommend.

Housed in an opaque bottle with a pump dispenser, this serum’s lightweight liquid texture absorbs quickly into skin, with no sticky residue after it dries down. This means it works well both over and under other skin care products.

Ingredient-wise, there’s plenty to appreciate: this contains two forms of vitamin C (bis-glyceryl ascorbate and ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate) as advertised, both of which have research proving their ability to help brighten and even skin tone, as well as reduce fine lines and wrinkles. There are non-fragrant antioxidant plant extracts too, including soothing licorice and skullcap extracts.

A quick note on pH: the main form of vitamin C used here (bis-glyceryl ascorbate ) works best for skin in a pH up to 4.5, and this formula is at a pH of 4.11, so you can count on it “fighting premature aging from daily free radical assault” as claimed.

One of the major claims about this product is that it contains 10% AHA in the form of fruit extracts and juices. While some fruit extracts have mild exfoliating properties in high amounts and the citrus juices provide some of the AHA citric acid, they simply don’t have the potency or benefit of synthetic AHAs such as glycolic or lactic acid. While this does contain lactic acid in a supporting capacity, Tatcha doesn’t make exfoliating claims about it, plus the amount doesn’t come close to a 10% concentration. In essence, don’t count on this serum for exfoliation.

Another issue is that many of the touted fruit extracts (grapefruit extract, orange, lemon, and lime juices) are known skin irritants. Over time, using these on skin will lead to more problems, not fewer, making this one to avoid (see More Info below for details).

In an ironic twist, the citrus juices increase the risk of discolorations when skin is exposed to sunlight. Remember, even if you apply a broad spectrum product, no sunscreen can filter 100% of UV rays. For some, the small percentage that reaches skin can be enough for the citrus juices to cause what’s known as a phototoxic reaction, resulting in dark spots.

While there are aspects to love about this serum, overall, it’s a disappointment and not on par with better serums or vitamin C treatments available.

The familiar 15% ascorbic acid is joined by antioxidant ferulic acid but Drunk Elephant kept going, adding several other antioxidants, reparative ingredients, and lightweight plant oils. The result is a comprehensive vitamin C treatment that is suitable for most skin types—those with oily to very oily skin may prefer a lighter formula.

We should note that Drunk Elephant recently reformulated C-Firma Day Serum (per the brand, it was to create a thicker texture) and upgraded the packaging to a bottle with a twist-up pump dispenser. This review is of the new, reformulated and repackaged formula.

Let's discuss that 15% concentration of vitamin C (ascorbic acid). There is an incredible amount of research around vitamin Cs benefit for skin, particularly for its ability to improve the appearance of sun damaged, uneven skin tone and ability to strengthen the skin's barrier. Vitamin C can also help boost the free-radical protection ability of your sunscreen when worn underneath it. At a pH of just under 3.5, this impressive formula is right for stability and effectiveness, too.

The antioxidant ferulic acid boosts the UV and free-radical defense of vitamin C and provides additional stability benefits for the additional antioxidants in this formula.

Those centerpiece ingredients aside, you'll also find pumpkin, hyaluronic acid (as sodium hyaluronate—the ideal form for topical application), green tea, pomegranate and licorice root extracts, just to name a few. There is nothing lacking here, and the addition of the brands' favored marula oil adds moisture to skin. It's just enough that those with combination to dry skin will likely find it lightweight—as opposed to heavy or oily—but as mentioned above, those with oily or very oily skin may prefer a more fluid serum.

C-Firma Day Serum earns our highest recommendation for its potent level of ascorbic acid coupled with a comprehensive series of additional anti-aging ingredients and lightweight non-fragrant plant oils.
