sewing on a wig?

I am wanting longer hair and I just get a bit annoyed with the cost of weaves so I was wondering if anyone has sewn on a wig and their experience/advice. I've seen a few videos but am wondering if anyone else has done it. I have fairly straight but thick hair that grazes my shoulders so how should I do it?
