frizz

I have curly hair, but not very curly. I have the kind that is wavy until the bottom of my ears, when it gets really curly. It is soooooooooooooo frizzy! I have tried every product under the sun. Is there any way I can make the frizz go away?

Wow ladies! Thanks for providing denden798 excellent recommendations and tips to get rid of frizz. I've heard of the curly girl method and saw great results from doing that. I personally don't have curly hair, but my sister tried that method and loves it!

Cheers,

Tiffany

I have a few suggestions-

First -  Ouidad Hair Care I used it for a long time and LOVED it!  My hair has gotten a little thinner and it wasn't working as well, either that or they changed the formula a bit. I say it is **definitely worth a try** It was awesome for me. They had a set that included like 5 different products, mini size, so you can play with different items.** Very Important Note - after you shampoo and condition, before you even get out of the shower, there is a product you use, (call and talk to someone at Ouidad and they'll tell you the name for sure) do not even blot your hair, apply to soaking wet hair and comb through - it will not work as well if you don't use immediately on soaking wet hair, don't even let your hair air day for a second. I think you should try this line first, it rocked. Sephora carries Ouidad, I'm pretty sure they will take it back if you don't like it, just double check. If you get directly through Ouidad, double check their return policy.

After that I recommend - Ojon it  worked nicely for a while, it has a strong scent and I just couldn't tolerate it. Living Proof is what I'm currently using and I like it. I didn't try it in very high-humidity though. I'll try to think of some others that may work for you, if I can I'll post them.

***Super Important - find a hairdresser who knows how to cut curly hair,  my hair dresser is incredible,  he really knows what he is doing. This has made a huge difference for me, all the products in the world don't work half as well unless your hair iscut properly. Ouidad has a salon in NYC, she created the line for herself,  she has really curly hair.  She's very experienced with cutting curly hair. I have never been (although I live in upstate NY) from what I hear she is a master, a goddess.

Finally, if you are thinking of having your hair chemically straightened, think again. Even before the Brazilian Straightening(which is controversial)it's a scary process. Straightening treatments are serious business and you need to think long and hard before getting into that. A few years ago when I was having my hair cutwhen one of the owners of the salon(my hairdresser owns the business with him) asked me if I would like to have my hair chemically straightened, for free!! Whaaattt? He was giving a 'how to' class and needed clients with 'virgin' hair, like mine (unprocessed, no color or anything) I told him I'd think about it. When I spoke with my guy he said he didn't think it was a great idea for me. You really need to maintain it....religiously. The straightening process straightens from the roots to the end, right? So, think about what kind of hair grows in. Yup. Curly. Now you've got lots of straight hair and curly roots growing in that need to be treated chemically to match your straight hair or you'd have to straight iron the roots like mad..not a terribly appealing idea to me. Imagine the damage being done. Also, if you decide to stop, you have to let it grow out and have the same problem, part straight and part curly. Doesn't sound fun to me.

Well, Hope this helps you. (Sorry if there are typos, I don't have time to proof this. Hope it's not too bad.) Hopefully, you'll keep us all posted. Thanks.

One thing that most people forget about curly hair is the...

One thing that most people forget about curly hair is the fact  that due to it's nature, it tends to be drier.  Now, you will not be able to get rid of all frizz, for you need to expect some frizz with curly hair, for that is the nature of it.  You can get rid fo the frizz completely but it tends to give that "fake" curl look.  Not pretty.

There is a method called The Curly Girl Method in which a lot of curlies are converting too.  There are many ways in which people do this method.  The most common is the original way, which I have broken it up.

1. No Sulfates. Sulfates tend to be drying to not only the hair but to the scalp as well.  Think of it this way.  Would  you put dishsoap in your hair?  Chances are you said no and yet the same ingredent,  sodium laureth sulfate, is in dishsoap.  Ouch.  What sulfates do are remove not only the dirt, but the natural oil from your hair.  Hair needs natural oils in order to stay moisturized.  By shampooing, you are limiting the oils you hair is getting.

2. No Silicones. Yep, those silicones must go as well.  There is a reason though: they do just about as much damage as sulfates do.  Don't know what I mean?  Silicones were made in order to coat the hair in order to help lock in the moisture that might be in the hair.  Sounds good, right?  Wrong.  Without sulfates or any harsher ingredents, silicones cannot be removed unless they are water soluable.  Good luck trying to find those in styling products and conditioners.  Water soluble will be harder to find.  But anywyas, when the hair is coated in silicones that cannot be removed, the same problem arises.  Hair because dry and brittle, due to the amount of moisture that is unable to get into the folicle.  Oh plus silicones only help to produce product buildup.   Yuck!

3. No Blow Dryers/Flat Irons. This is the part that most people modify.  They use a blow dryer but keep it on low heat.  Flat irons however, are a big no-no in the Curly Girl Method.  The point of this method is to get the curl looking beautiful and shiny and not dull and flat.

Below I have listed the steps for the Curly Girl Method as copied from the site wikiHow.  As for step two, when I started the method, I didn't do that and my hair turned out fine.  So, some of the steps can be taken out and modified but this is the whole basis of it.

1. Clarify with a sulfate shampoo (for the last time) before beginning

2. Have your hair trimmed

3. Replace your brush with a wide-toothed comb

4. Stop shampooing your hair

5. Wash your scalp with conditioner (conditioner washing).

6. Distribute conditioner throughout all of your hair and untangle gently.

7. Do the final rinse of your hair with cool or cold water.

8. Apply products to your hair.

9. Gently scrunch your hair with a t-shirt, paper towels, or a micro-fiber towel to remove excess moisture.

10. Decrease the drying time of your hair by plopping.

11. Dry your hair.

12. Find an experience hairstylist.

13. Have your hair trimmed every six to eight weeks.

14. Give your hair time to adjust.

15. Enjoy your beautiful curls.

If you would like more information on it, you can search Google.  There is a website called Naturally Curly that I recommend checking out.  The people there are amazing and willing to help out anyone.

Now, as for products.  If you go with this method, Carol's Daughter is one of the few (if not the only) Curly Girl friendly products out there on Sephora.  Again, it is all about being open with your options.  I use products called JessiCurl, which I love because I am supporting a woman who basically built her own at home business.  Plus, the products smell amazing to begin with.  Oh and if you are allergic to scents, JessiCurl is the way to go.  There is a non-scented version as well.

Hopefully, this helps you in some shape or form in controlling the frizz.  If you have any questions about the method, don't be afriad to ask me.  I am more than willing to help others.
