Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

Has anyone experience excessive shedding of hair after Olaplex 3 treatment??

I thought it was a coincidence the 1st time, but it happened after the 2nd and 3rd tx.

I used it weekly x 3, and the hair loss after the 3rd treatment is noticeable.

I will not use it again (and only used about 2/3 of 1 bottle).

No hair scalp itch or redness, to suggest an allergic reaction.

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

Hi everyone,

I have been on this article since November 2021. I took time away to try and forget about my hairloss, however, I felt the need to return with my updated hair loss journey.

I am a 20 year old female who has had an absurd amount of blood tests done to figure out what is causing my hair loss. I have seen 3 dermatologist, 2 doctors, 1 obgyn, 1 endocrinologist, and 1 hormone specialist. I’ve had an MRI, ultrasound, and like I said, an absurd amount of blood tests. Everything came back perfectly normal, I am a healthy female with absolutely no underlying issues. Everyone in my family has a full head of hair, baldness does not run in my family at all. With that being said, I continue to confidently say that Olaplex IS the cause of my hair loss.

Before I used Olaplex, my virgin hair went all the way down to my mid thigh. I had super long, and thick hair. The moment I put Olaplex in my hair, I started shedding insane amounts of hair. I have easily lost 70% of my hair, and continue to do so to this day. I also experience seborhhic dermatitis due to Olaplex, I have never had an issue with dandruff or oily scalp prior to Olaplex. This product has completely ruined my hair, confidence, and well being and continues to do so.

I came back on this post to update you all that I am still losing my hair, I am even considering of shaving my head if it does not stop. Words can not describe the draining and empty feeling when you see your once beautiful, thick, long, virgin hair fall out after every shower. I don’t even recognize my hair anymore, Olaplex is a horrible product. It has almost been roughly 8 months since I used the shampoo and conditioner and it still continues to damage me.

I have kept all my hair that I’ve lost in bags for evidence if a court case ever comes up. I hope you all are doing well, keep staying positive that one day this will end.❤️

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

Omg I have been waiting for you to give us update on your scalp biopsy. What did it show? I have been so depressed, still losing hair after olaplex… I don’t have insurance here but I am going to Europe next month and planning on getting scalp biopsy done there. I have no doubt this mess is caused by olaplex since the same has happened to my sister after she used olaplex!

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

FB group for Olaplex hair damage. I also started collecting my hair in bags.  If we can get enough people, perhaps we can get a class action

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

I switched to Olaplex in October of 2021. I  lost 70% of my hair in a 3 week span. I stopped all hair loss by using Alberto VO5 clarifying shampoo. My hair is growing back but it is a different texture. I have been wearing wigs because of chunks missing and patches of scalp all over my head. I hope your story ends well. Maybe this experience will save you from something else

If you start looking into what goes into our food and pharmaceuticals you will find  very disturbing facts. Stay strong and protect yourself.

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

They supposedly reformulated without butylphenyl methylpropional (lilial) which is an ingredient that is banned in European Union linked to infertility. Similar to BPA, phthalates, and parabens, lilial can act as an endocrine disruptor. Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that may mimic or interfere with the body's hormones - which is why Too much estrogen causes hair loss and thinning hair. OLAPLEX says they have removed lilial from it's product as of January 2022 - Check when you purchased it and throw it away if you see butylphenyl methylpropional as an ingredient on your bottle. ***PLEASE READ*** in United Stated FDA does not regulate what goes into ANY cosmetic/personal product list and ANY and ALL harmful ingredients can be hidden under the ingredient named FRAGRANCE/PARFUM. Only through an independent lab tests would any of us know what is actually in everyday products we are using if they are scented. This is the most frustrating, upsetting and devastating fact about products sold to us without clear laws for companies to abide by. At this point I used pretty much every product on recall list, everything with ingredients that were banned in EU in 1990 but not in USA and I lost half of my hair. Only about a month ago I had an aha moment from a random search in google about hair loss which popped up settlements and lawsuits, which ultimately took me through the rabbit hole of 'it's not what the product claims to do - it's what's in it we should avoid'. Olaplex is currently being sued in Canada: Application to Authorize: Olaplex and Sephora Class Action – March 3, 2022

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

they're being sued in Canada? Let's do this then.  This company really really really needs to pay for what they've done AND THE FDA NEEDS TO BE FUNDED AND EXPAND INTO COSMETICS. (fb group I created to try and get us all together)

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

So glad this thread exsists..let the stylist tell it Olaplex is the next best thing....I knew somthing was wrong but truly couldnt figure out what it was since this was recommened by a curl pattern specialist. I had started using new shampoos based off her recommendation and the Olaplex 3/0 products were recommended. Now since the products is so expensive for such a little amount I used every two weeks as a treatment for my hair. I noticed each time I used it I had an incredibly itchy scalp and lots of hair shedding. I thought it was one of the other shampoos she recommended so I did process of elimination and found that each time I used the Olaplex that's when I had issues. Its good to see this thread as when you have a recommendation from a syllist you just assume its going to work but not really. I guess it is a person to person situation but seeing so many people have this issue and knowing how expensive this product is..Im actually appauld now..and wondering is the stylist using these products are getting some type of kickback at their salons for recommendations cause I just dont understand how this products keeps being pushed as a great thing...not for me..and apparently not for the 765 people on this thread...but I guess by numbers standards that still pretty low...looking at the number globally of people that seem to love it....

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

I used #3 ONCE one week ago and have also lost about 1/2 my hair since, feeling devasted - wondering if anyone who has experienced this can tell us how long we should expect shedding. Also, Is there a lawsuit against olaplex yet??? SO many people mentioning that there should be a class-action lawsuit but no evidence that there is one...

UPDATE: (Not sure if we can post links here) One thing we can do is submit a consumer report to the FDA for adverse events with cosmetic products. It can be done all online, which I am going to do right now. I hope that you will consider doing the same: https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/medwatch/index.cfm

Including a little more info from the FDA site here:

"Health professionals, consumers and patients can voluntarily report observed or suspected adverse events for human medical products to FDA. Voluntary reporting can help FDA identify unknown risk for approved medical products. Reporting can be done through our online reporting portal or by downloading, completing and then submitting FDA Form 3500 (Health Professional) or 3500B (Consumer/Patient) to MedWatch: The FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program."

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

Hi,

i’m so sorry this is happening to you it truly is a heart breaking journey.

my hair started falling out april 7th and hasn’t stopped since. i’ve tried a ton of products and nothing really helps. the purador shampoo helped me for a while. but if you look through the thread there are lots people who found products to stop the shedding. it’s been over 3 months for me but hopefully it stops sooner for you! i’m praying for it to stop every day</3

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

@grat Thanks for your response. It really is. I am considering just shaving my head and wearing a scarf because I can't mentally deal with this loss. Can I ask how often each week you used Pura dor to see a result?

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

update on my hair loss journey

the hair loss was almost completely gone from using the pura’dor shampoo for a while…

then i decided to use clarifying shampoo one time and now i am back to square one, no idea why.

but i wanted to come on here and ask anyone if they had dyed their hair while they were going through this?

my hair is a really ugly orange/yellow blonde with crazy roots and kinda just want to dye it dark brown so it won’t look so awful…

i know it sounds like a awful idea but this is seriously messing with my metal health and if i could at least dye it a better color it will make me feel better

please help..

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

I colored my hair with Madison Reed. My hair is growing in but still very fine and wispy in texture and wierdly wild and unmanageable, so wanted to give it a little "weight" with the color. No issues. The best thing I've done since this ordeal started is a salon in my little town has started specializing in "COVID hair loss solutions". I still don't know if my hairloss was from Olaplex or COVID, but I am betting on COVID since I have used OLaplex Shampoo and Conditioner again with no problem. Anyway, I got tape-in extensions and I feel human again! I have now had one set in a few months and had them removed and "moved up" with no damage, no hair loss - all good. Cutting it all off was just not a happy option for me. Glad the Purador worked for you!Regrowth after approx 6-7 monthsRegrowth after approx 6-7 monthsTape-in Hair ExtensionsTape-in Hair Extensions

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

Hi !

Sorry for you, I know what it's like, I have written my journey on page 21 if you want to read it (and with some update if you search my name in the search bar) anyway, I'm one of those who always have colored hair. I had pink hair when I lost nearly 50% of my hair because of olaplex, and after the loss was reduced with the help of clarifying shampoo, I decided I needed a new haircut and color for my mental health, because having pink hair just kept reminding me of the big mistake I made with using olaplex and all the hair I lost...

So I cut my hair and dyed it dark green.

I knew the brand of the dye as I used it for years and so I knew it was not going to damage my hair as it's only semi-permanent color and so only conditioner with color in it.

So I think it's safe for you to color your hair, but only if it's a semi-permanent color. Do not use permanent or Demi-permanent color, those with peroxide etc... In it !

I'm not a hairstylist, I just have colored my hair for the last 12years but I really will not recommend using those dye box with women face on it etc.... any other time but especially now after this olaplex disaster.

You say you want to dye your hair dark brown, there is semi-permanent dark brown dye that exist, and for the brand I would recommend, it's lunar tides, artic fox, they don't do dark brown but if you mix some of their colors then it will be brown.

Any semi-permanent brand will do really, just do not use anything else to color your hair. Semi-permanent is only like I said, conditioner with color in it so it's will be like putting a mask or conditioner (without proteins in it) and tho not really affect your hair in a bad way.

If you're not sure, always do a test on some of your hair on the back of your head.

Sorry if I'm not helping...

I hope you are going to be okay, don't hesitate to ask questions if you need 😉

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

Hello all - I posted back in October 2021 as I had experienced 50% hair loss which I’m now convinced was from

the use of Olaplex 0 and 3 treatment. As an update, my hair started growing back after about 3 months and now I have a full layer within my hair of about 6 inches of regrowth - thankfully! It was incredibly stressful. I used the Ducray Anacaps and still do every other day. I try to eat healthy and massage scalp once a week. I also saw my hairstylist recently who also noted that it’s likely from the protein and she’s heard of others having this issue with Olaplex. As I have fine curly coloured hair - I don’t think it could handle the treatment. Olaplex should really deal with this given how many people are noting this hair loss issue. It’s incredibly stressful. Anyway I wanted to let people know it takes time but in my case hair is growing back. Wishing everyone well!

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

But Olaplex 3 doesn't have protein

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

@Tonroslin thank you for the update, wishing you well too 😘

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

For the last year, my hair has started feeling thinner - my ponytail was getting smaller.  Then, about 6 months ago, I noticed a thinning spot on the crown of my head.  Soon, the thinning spot was spreading in the same area. So I was just reading this thread and I had a "Eureka!" moment!

The thinning began when I switched to Olaplex products. I am also confident that the reason for the thinning spot at the top of my head is because that is where I pile up my hair while conditioning in the shower.

I am going to stop using immediately.  Going to go back to my previous brand shampoo/conditioner. This is the only way to know if it's the Olaplex. Will come back here to report if there are any improvements.  So excited to think that maybe this horrible thinning issue will be in the past!

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

@layne1 good luck!! I suggest you to go see a trichologist (dermatologist for hair) if the issue will not be resolved.

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

Thank you!

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

I am so grateful for this thread. I used 0 and 3 coded product 3 months ago (used it before twice in small amounts) and immediately my hair started falling like crazy. I had no issues with hair loss before, only when I was 11-12 when puberty kicked in and it was never noticable. I used the product to make my hair better, and it was non threated hair so no issues at all. I found this forum directly, but then I assumed I had hormonal issues as I have PCOS for many years. Tests later, they found no underlying conditions in my blood. Started taking biotine and upped my vit D doses. Yesterday found a bald spot in my scalp. I was shocked. For months people have been telling me I was just paranoid with hair loss as I don’t have visible loss - but would assume 10-15% loss. What freaked me out was that I was losing all hairs from the roots, and they looked super healthy. Finally went to the doctor after the bald spot and she said it looks like minor sepp. Dermatitis which doesn’t make you lose hair. So I came back here, reddit and twitter and saw many women had the same. I have oily, fine, super straight and a lot of hair naturally. I see others with similar hair losing hair in this thread. Also saw that it did trigger dermatitis in others as well. I feel a lot better as I saw here many people here got their hair back eventually, and I hope the best for the rest as well. My doctor gave me seleniumsulphate shampoo for twice a week, and I also bought pur a’dor and a hair spray. I’ll update the process here, but even with one wash with the seleniumsulphate I feel like I have less fall. Its really horrible, can’t believe I did this to my hair. Here is a photo of the bald spot, I am suspecting it is where the product had direct contact by the way.

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

Top of my head looks a lot like yours… Have you had any regrowth this in the area where it fell from the root? Any advice for something that has worked?
