Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

Has anyone experience excessive shedding of hair after Olaplex 3 treatment??

I thought it was a coincidence the 1st time, but it happened after the 2nd and 3rd tx.

I used it weekly x 3, and the hair loss after the 3rd treatment is noticeable.

I will not use it again (and only used about 2/3 of 1 bottle).

No hair scalp itch or redness, to suggest an allergic reaction.

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

My texture looks a lot like yours.  Wispy.  Pre-Olaplex my hair has always been baby fine but it never looked it does now (which is simiilar to yours).  For reference purposes, I had Covid in March 2020 pretty badly and it didn't do a thing to my hair.  Maybe it was a bit blonder.  I used Olaplex in August of this year and now my hair looks like my dog got creative with the scissors in my sleep.  It's also very wispy.

I would err on the side that it's Olaplex.  The effects are pretty hideous from that product.

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

I have to wear a wig. Are you wearing wigs? I would love any suggestions on brands etc.

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

I'm not wearing a wig. I wish I could help. I would definitely get a good cut. It helped to stop further breakage. I just cut about 7 inches off, run moroccan oil through it, and let it grow.

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

I used to use olaplex no. 6 last year, and after 2-3 uses my hair was falling out everytime I touched my head. My hair has never been dyed, and is long, thick, and healthy. I stopped using it after the 3rd use, and within about a week my hair went completely back to normal. It's been almost a year now, and I haven't ever had an issue like that with my hair again - I'm glad I stopped using it when I did!

I like the gisou hair oil now, it gives me the results that I was hoping olaplex was going to.

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

Please get your iron checked. One of the reasons for hair fall is low hemoglobin.

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

I just filed a complaint with the FDA.

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

UPDATE:

I've had Olaplex hair loss, as well.  It began about four months ago and my hair was just breaking right in pieces.  If I washed it, brushed it or if a light wind happend to go by, it broke.  Right now, it seems like the breakage has stopped (as of 12.2.21) The texture is still a bit weird but it's not the garbage it was months ago.  Meaning, I can actually brush it without it looking like cotton candy.  What has helped me is to put in Moroccan Oil on Friday night and no washing until Monday morning.  I mean LOTS AND LOTS OF Moroccan Oil (I used the official Moroccan Oil).  I also used Clarifying Shampoo and that seemed to really help. It almost feels like the Olaplex left some Chemicals Straight from Hell on the hair and it took a series of clarifying shampoos to get rid of that crap.  Since my hair is now at least styleable, I have high hopes I won't look like Carol Brady from the Brady Bunch much longer (sorry, that's the only possible way to explain my current style after all the breakage.)  I do run Ouai oil on the ends to soften it.  Oh, and for those who think it can't possibly be Olaplex, that garbage not only changed the longer hair but also the hair closest to my scalp which had no color or anything to it.  The texture had been changed so I'm guessing I'll just have to grow anything that sprung from my scalp from August and cut it but in the meanwile I think the Moroccan Oil and Ouai oil seem to be working to make me look a little less insane.  Yes, I would absolutely join a lawsuit, btw and do NOT EVER listen to any stylist who swears by this garbage.  I would quit any stylist who insists on this garbage.

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

THIS.

Any protein treatment attaches itself to the hair, hardening it, and thereby protecting it from damage. But when you plaster your hair with too much protein, it will become weirdly dry, brittle and kind of stiff over time.

As always with dry hair, it breaks really easily, leading to lots of damage even from the usual hair care activities, like washing your hair, combing it, braiding it and so on.

In short, protein overload is one of the worst states of hair: looking dull and dry while breaking like there’s no tomorrow.

These products and all of the "Bonding" treatments should come with a warning or yanked from the shelves immediately.

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

Christmas came early!

UPDATE: I tried a home treatment this morning and I swear my hair hasn't looked this normal in 5 months!

Here's my treatment: 3 to 4 Tablespoons of ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar)  I used the type with Mother and used one of those basic squirt bottles. Fill rest of bottle with water. Shake the ACV and water thoroughly.

Douse your hair completely saturating it. Put in towel because it'll smell. I left in for 10 min but will do 20 in 2 days.

Wash with Suave Clarifying Shampoo. Yes, you read that right. Moisturize with conditioner with no proteins. I'm trashing all protein or bonding products.

I didnt even use moroccan oil and after only one "treatment " or ACV rinse my hair is bouncy and shiny! My texture looks more normal.  It'll take a few treatments but I've discovered a trick and wanted to share! ACV slowly removes the toxic proteins from Olaplex! My volume is 30% increased just after doing this once. I seriously want to cry I'm so relieved.

IT IS THE OLAPLEX.  That proves it!

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

Hey so how do you know if your shampoo or conditioner have protein? Does it say it in the label? Or how does that work? It might be different bc I live in Mexico 😭 I started using the tresseme stop hair loss shampoo but haven’t noticed any difference. I will start doing acv, hopefully it works

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

what clarifying shampoo did you use?

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

Sorry for delay.  I've had a bad cold.  So you can go with the Aveda clarifying shampoo, Ouai clarifying, Neutrogena clarifying or even the Suave clarifying.  I know it sounds crazy but they've all worked equally well.  You're getting rid of the garbage Olaplex left on the hair.  I think the chemicals in that product stays on for a very long time (even after regular shampooing) or changes the hair to its very root which is why the breakage continues long after the last time we used Olaplex.  Also, I hate to say it but a drastic haircut probably saved months of even MORE breakage.  I had my hairdresser cut layers into the hair but working with the all of the different lengths that Olaplex broke into my hair.  Once you have that type of breakage the hair tends to continue breaking up the strand.  I think the emergency haircut was the best idea.

On a happy note, it's now been about five months.  Post clarifying shampoos and lots of Moroccan Oil/Ouai Oil and a pretty drastic haircut, I am starting to see my old texture return.  I don't look like my dog macheted my hair in the night or I suffered some tragic burn.  It feels like I'm past the worst of it.  Doesn't look great but it's no longer severely tragic.  NEVER DOING OLAPLEX EVER AGAIN.  I don't care if they offered $1M.  What a mess!

Your post is literally my experience as are many of the others. I had an amazing first week w/ Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother Leave In & the No. 7 Gold Bonding Oil. My hair was so smooth, soft & shiny. Within a matter of 3 months I went from INSANELY thick hair (that close friends of mine that are celebrity hairstylists have offered to thin in the past as a joke) to that of a balding witch. I don’t know how else to describe it, but those witches in the scary kids movies w/ straw like balding heads of non existent hair. I get the sparse cotton candy references! 💯 The Olaplex made my hair akin to that of someone who had been exposed to radiation. I mean that in the most sensitive light, as this is that traumatizing for us Olaplex!  I can’t take my 6 year old daughter to school w/o a baseball cap. It is heartbreaking. She has a televised concert in 2 weeks…do I wear a wig?  I can’t dye my roots or any gray strays, bc more hair will surely fall out and I have very little. Someone called her hair Carol Brady hair. That was one of my phases…I totally related…thank God for this form, bc I googled Olaplex hair loss & found out I am not crazy!!  I had my Dr. run every lab/blood work under the sun…nothing came up. Everything was fine. I haven’t changed anything except using these two products.  That is when Olaplex came to mind. Then, everything made sense!  My heart goes out to everyone here. If you have any tips or advice plz lmk…

PS: This is a SUPER embarrassing pic to post, but I am doing it in hopes it helps someone else… ❤️

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

I’m so sorry you’re going through this too! I would recommend filing a complaint with the FDA with your clear bloodwork and pictures to support your claim that Olaplex caused this. The more people who file a complaint, the more likely the FDA is to take this seriously and spare other women the same trauma we’ve experienced. Good luck & I hope your healthy returns in time!

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

Thanks for the suggestion re FDA. I was cleared for any potential other causes and saw a hair loss specialist dermatologist That said it was the product. I’ll file a complaint as well.

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

Thank you soo much for the update.  I'm having to wear a wig but this gives me hope for the future! From what I understand, an attorney will want a letter from a doctor stating that it is, in their medical opinion, the Olaplex causing/ caused the hair loss. That is what I have found out so far. Did you contact the FDA?

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

I did.  I filed a complaint yesterday.  There is no way that so many women are experiencing this and it's all in our heads or vitamins or whatever.  One slight bit of hope is that this morning I ran my fingers through my hair and didn't see hairs breaking in all directions so I think that after about 4 1/2 months, the devastation is coming to an end.  I can now go on dates without having a panic attack.  It's the little things.

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

Olaplex caused me huge hair loss, after using it for 4 times, my hair fell in chunks full of my hand

it is clear this case is happening to tiny users, but it happens anyway.

I will stop it and pray for me to regain my hair

Re: Olaplex 3 and hair loss?

Yes, this hair loss is happening to me and has for the last year after using Olaplex 3 and Olaplex 6. I did use the shampoo and conditioner as well on occasion. My hairdresser uses Olaplex as well when she creates my color.

I am going to stop all treatments at this time after reviewing some of these notes. I have many photos of the hair shedding every day and have lost much length on the sides of my head.

I am here to find out if hair ever comes back? Can anyone suggest a product that helped them grow hair?

I've lost over 40 percent of the thickness I once had and I have long, naturally curly blond highlighted hair. Any advice is helpful!
