For best results, apply before heat styling.  Just work it evenly into your towel-dried hair and blow-dry, section by section, until your hair is dry and straight.  Using a vent-brush to hold each section of hair as it dries really helps.  I'm referring to a brush such as the brush in the below photo (second from right):
