How difficult is it to maintain pink/rose gold hair?

Thinking of making a change once itโ€™s safe to

go to the hair salon regularly. I heard rose gold hair is a pain to keep up. Thoughts?

Definitely depends on how you feel about your roots and how fast your hair grows, @Over40Glam. @kristenyhan made some great points in that regard, below.

If you have light hair (naturally or chemically), and you've gotten the rose gold permanently rather than semi permanent as many are, you could maintain for a while using just using color protect products (Briogeo's color protect products are good, but definitely need to use the primer plus shampoo and conditioner). To supplement color, a weekly or every two weeks (depending on how often you're shampooing) color depositing shampoo or conditioner (the Watercolors Rose Gold shampoo is a fave of mine) will help maintain vibrancy. You might need to up usage if it was a semi permanent color to begin with. I'm someone who likes/needs to shampoo daily, so I would add the Watercolors every 2-3 days.

Re: How difficult is it to maintain pink/rose gold hair?

First of all, I think that rose gold hair is beautiful! I'll try to answer your question to the best of my ability; while I don't have rose-gold hair, I have a golden brown balayage, and I think that I can answer some questions about color maintenance.

To answer your question, it really depends on a number of factors. First, are you okay with your roots showing when your hair starts to grow out? If you want to maintain an all-around rose gold color that even covers your roots, then you'll have to go back into the salon very often to get your roots touched-up. I have a balayage, which means that the dye is painted in highlights across my hair, which can go a while without being re-dyed, since the roots have room to grow out a bit without looking weird. I can probably go about 6 months without going back to the salon.

Second, you'll probably want to purchase shampoos and conditioners that focuses on color maintenance. If you continue to use regular shampoos and conditioners from drugstore brands like Pantene, I guarantee you that your hair will become brassy within a couple of weeks. I use the Fade-Defying Orchid Oil Shampoo and Conditioner from OGX - they're each around $6, which is really good for a 13oz. bottle of shampoo/conditioner, and they really do help maintain my hair color and nourish my hair, which has been damaged from being bleached/straightened all the time.

I hope that answers your question! Feel free to reach out if you're confused about anything!
