question about return

i recently bought a fondation but i tried it and it was too light for me, i bought it at a sephora inside jcpenny so when i tried returning it they told me i wasnt able to because i had no receipt but they said i’d have better luck at a sephora that isn’t in a jcpenny, could i return/exchange this fondation without a receipt?
