Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

I'm trying to get organized here, because I find I'm wasting way too much money buying a new one whenever I misplace the old one.  Today it's purses and makeup bags.  I've been matching sets with some success but still have so many I've gotten confused.  How do I know which to keep and which to toss? How do I organize those that remain?  Help!!!  I'm drowning here...  All best, Maggy

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

Look on the containers of your beauty products for expiration dates or the little jar symbol. Inside the picture of the jar is a number followed by M (6M, 12M, 24M) which tells you how long the product is good for in months. Then you have to remember when you opened it, this task can be made easier in the future by writing on the container with a marker the date of when you opened it. Toss anything that is past its expiration time. Then look at/open the containers and see if any have changed color/have a funny smell/ just don't look right. Toss these. Toss or donate to a shelter anything that you know (either in the front of your mind, or secretly, in the back of your mind) that you will never wear. The disco color shadows, that foundation that just doesn't match your skin properly, that mascara that always clumps, you get the picture. Now you are left with your core collection.

I went to a dollar store and bought a bunch of those Sterilite drawer type organizers and labeled the various drawers with "Shadow", "Liner", "Blush", "Highlighter", "Brushes" etc, and sorted out my stuff by category. Then I got a makeup bag and put in it everything that I would use in the AM, each day. That way I can just grab my bag off the shelf and get started. If I want to do a different look, I just pick out the items I need from my organizer drawers and use them. Remember to put them back or the system crashes FAST! Silverware organizers also work well for sorting out your stuff by category.

Hope this helps, I have OCD, so maybe you won't use all the steps, but it will get you started!Smiley Happy

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

AGREE TOTALLY WITH PRETTYINPA! (DOES THAT MEAN i AM OCD TOO??? THAT'S OKAY). USING THOSE REASONABLY PRICED PLASTIC DRAWERS KEEPS YOU FROM HAVING TO ROOT AROUND LOOKING FOR A PRODUCT, WASTING TIME, AND GETTING FRUSTRATED. OF COURSE GIVING EVERYTHING A "HOME" AND PUTTING IT BACK THERE IS A MUST. I ALSO AGREE ABOUT EXPIRATION DATES AND USING A PERMANENT MARKER WHEN YOU OPEN A NEW PRODUCT TO DATE IT. ANYTHiNG THAT LOOKS WEIRD (DRIED OUT, SEPARATED, BROKEN UP POWDER PRODUCTS) OR SMELLS FUNKY SHOULD BE TOSSED, REGARDLESS OF THE DATE. HAVE FUN SORTING. YOU'LL FEEL SO MUCH BETTER WHEN

EVERYTHING HAS A PLACE!

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

These are the guidelines that I follow:

When to replace:

1. Mascara-3 months if used daily, 6 months if not

2. Concealer-18 months

3. Liquid Foundation-1 year

4. Loose powder foundation-no expiration date

5. cream eyeshadow-1 year

6. powder eyeshadow-2 years

7. lip pencil-3 years

8. lipstick-2 years

9. lipgloss-1 year

10. nailpolish-2 years

I also agree with prettyinpa about looking at the jar logo most items have. It looks like this:

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

Hi Maggy!  What I did was went on eBay and got a bunch of med - to small bags cheap.  Like I now own 3 Sponge Bob Square Pants bags I got for .99cents and a few Miss Kitty bags and even a High School Musical Pencil Case.  I'm on Disability so I couldn't spend a lot of money ( I buy my makeup after my Birthday and Christmas which are almost exactly 6 months apart.)  --  (so yes that means very soon  YAY.)   Anyhow I got all these very cheap bags and "used" makeup cases (they seem brand new) from eBay.  I have no drawers in my vanity and I share the top of the sink with my roommate.  So I went through all my makeup, just like PrettyinPA said, and I also made sure I didn't have double colors in eyeliners, lipsticks, etc or if they were very close picked a favorite, then organized everything into individual bags.  All eyeliners are in that High School Musical Pencil Case.  Lip Pencils are in a soft Monkey Head bag with big ears (I love that one.) Cleanser, Moisturizer, Primer, and TM in an old STILA makeup case. ETC.  Then I pile them all up on top of each other on my side of the sink.  Is it the best way? no.  But it works for my situation.  I have also in the past used old tool boxes but better yet I've found are used tackle boxes.  If I had all the money and the space I'd love to get one of those big professional Train Cases.  Then I could put all my hair stuff in it too.

I just reread you post and if your talking about organizing your purses.  Get a shelf in the closet put them all on it and only keep all your stuff in one at a time.

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

I use to have many makeup bags, too many as a matter of fact, that I was getting lost with everything that I owned!! Until I went to a friend's house and saw her makeup case!! It was so organized that I wanted one badly! However, it could be a little bit pricey. But I found one at the drugstore that was pretty cheap (under 25$), so I gave it a try. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't all that good either. (It's not actually my makeup case- my camera's pretty lame-but it pretty much looks the same. (mine wasn't a Whitney-Port-Caboodle-Giveaway-0812106.jpgCaboodle). But, after a while, my "collection" was getting too big for that case, so I went to my friend's house and asked her more questions about hers. Here's what I found out. The one with the little "drawers" (sorry, can't find the correct word in English) that open on the same side, like the one pictured above, seems to contains less, then the one with the drawers that open on opposite side of the train case(see picture below).  Since English is not my first language, I think images describe my point of vue better. It's also not my case (although it's pretty similar!), but you can see that it contains a pretty good amount of stuff. I got a Caboodle one for under 20$ (at the drugstore or Wal-Mart or Winner's, I can't remember) And I love it! It's easy to find my stuff in the morning, doesn't take as much place than multiple bags! I hope it helped a little!!

Ooups!! I have a hard time posting photos!!! here's another try!

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

Oh, Gawd.

I asked for advice on organizing  "makeup bags and purses" not "makeup, bags, and purses".  See the difference?

No harm done, though.  FF Sonja (who made straight As at the college again, yay!) helped and the job is done.  FWIW, I threw out makeup bags which had been FWYP or broken.  Matched remaining makeup bags to coordinating purses and placed them together.  Black purses on one shelf, then brown, then patterned purses last.

All best Maggy

Oups!! I'm sorry I didn't get it right the 1st time!!! All of my purses are in my closet, in a Ikea "organizator" (it's actually for shoes and clothes, but 3 of the 5 "drawyers" are used for my purses. As for make-up bags, I trew the old ones away when I bought my Caboodle case, and only kept 3, that I keep in one of the shelf of my closet for when I go away on vacations.!!!

Have a great day and have fun organizing your stuff!!!

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

@prettyinpa:  The organization saves me soooo much time!  Knowing you, I'll bet your stuff is super organized! Smiley Happy

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

@tenngal: Wow. .....wow.  Okay, so if I ever need any organization advice i'm going to call on you (or prettyinpa!)

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

@ohhenri: Okay, I want an organizer like that one now, and I think I want you to just organize it for me!

@prettyinpa: Your organizing tips are great, too! Really great tips.

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

@milbank- I would love to be a makeup organizer for people!  I just find it so relaxing to sort through stuff, I take it all out of the closet, arrange by types, throw stuff out (haha, more room for new stuff)Smiley Very Happy  Too bad there isn't a big market for someone to do that.

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

@PinP & TennG:  Ok I've decided we have to take a weekend and you two come to my house and help me clean and organize the spare  room off the bath and then set it up as a dressing room complete with my organized make up! It would be a miracle if I ever got it done on my own.  Keep it in mind!  Smiley Very Happy

PS  the shore is rockin!  My friends come down today as my brother and family go home.

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

@katimae:  I'd love to help you get organized, but, oh my gosh, I think that might involve me getting on an airplane, ha ha!  Smiley Happy

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

Hi! I keep all of my makeup in one place; with the exception of a small zip black makeup bag that I place into the purse/bag of the day.  When I do my makeup I bring the small zip bag with me into my makeup area in my home and remove what I don't need to maintain the days look and add what I will need to the bag after applying my makeup for the day.  Typically, I keep a concealer in it, lipstick for the day, and a NARS multiple for the day (actually a multiple stays in there just as back-up in case I am having to run quickly out then I can quickly create a coordinated look on the go).  For special days I have thrown in my pressed powder, a short-handled powder brush and mascara.  But that's how I stay organized.  Everything in one place and if not, then it is in this one small zip black bag that travels with me in my purse.

I find this is a way to stay organized and not misplace things.

Hope that is helpful!!!

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

Like prettyinpa, I have my cosmetics and skincare products stored in Rubbermaid-type storage containers that I sit on my dressing room table.  I have 4 stacking containers with 4 drawers each that pull out which I've stacked to make 2 "towers" and I've labeled the front of each drawer according to what it contains, such as, single eyeshadows - browns to greens, single eyeshadows - purples to blues, face brushes, eye brushes, etc.  Organizing my eyeshadows and lipsticks by color really helped me get organized even better, too.  I don't really even need to look at the labels on the drawers anymore after becoming used to where everything is at, but it really helped me in the beginning when I was first getting organized.  I also have a second smaller 2-drawer container where I store my lipsticks, lipglosses and skincare products which sits directly beside the other 4 containers.  I just took a photo which I'll insert below of how I've got my things organized since what I'm describing probably doesn't make a whole lot of sense, ha ha.  The photo is not the best, but I think it's good enough so that you can get an idea of what I'm talking about.

Hope this helps! Smiley Happy

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

@tenngal-  Gee, organization like yours puts mine to shame!  I have 2 Sterilite drawer organizers, 4 silverware trays and 3 train cases, but my closet looks nowhere nearly neat as your setup. I have something to aim for.......

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

tenngal---Dang girl I thought that was a salon at first glance! Smiley Surprised

I bow to you my BT friend!

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

@sephoramusthave:  ROTFLMAO!  You're so funny!  I love organizing so I'd be glad to help anytime, ha ha. Smiley Happy

Re: Please help me organize my makeup bags and purses

I'm very organized as well, thats why I dont support the new BT system. I like things in categories like they are right now. I dont have that much makeup ( although I have bought a LOT more since I started BT). I can fit everything I have into one cosmetics bag ( I posted a pic of it somewhere on the boards).
