Health and Sanity Check-Ins

Things are crazy now. I think we are all trying to stay healthy and maintain sanity as well. I thought I would start this thread so folks can check in and discuss how they're doing. I want all my BIC friends to be okay. I will kick this off with a first post. Take care of yourself lovelies.

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

Thank you so much @curlychiquita!  I appreciate the kind words!  ❤️

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

@mrsmouseHow is your son doing now?  Did he have a flare?

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

Aw, thank you so much for reaching out @Ispend2much6!  He's doing really good now.  He's been out of the hospital for over two weeks, so I am feeling a little more relaxed (I kinda felt like I was holding my breath there for a bit).  He has Type 1 Diabetes and went into DKA, basically his blood started turning acidic which eventually leads to organ shut down, but he got into the hospital before it got that far.  He thinks he got food poisoning & that was what caused it.  My worry for him right now is the hardest part.  Even an everyday cold can be challenging and a regular flu requires a hospital visit due to how serious it is for him.  I can't let my mind run with what could happen if he got this, so I keep focusing on the positives; the good I see happening with people coming together to help each other, and the love I feel coming from this amazing community.  ❤️

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

@mrsmouse   Oh, wow.  I do understand how delicate the blood sugar balance is with diabetics.  And being a mom and worrying!  I'm glad he's better.

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

Thanks so much @Ispend2much6!!  ❤️

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

Wow, @mrsmouse, you've had a difficult time lately!  How great, though, that you can see the good in this and maintain a positive attitude and kudos for hanging in there.

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

Thank you @CookieGirl1!  I am certainly trying to keep a good outlook & focus on the positives that are happening.  I appreciate each and every person on here on BIC so much!  Thank you for being one of those amazing people I look forward to connecting with!  ❤️

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

Oh @mrsmouse  I'm so sorry for all you've hd to deal with recently. Your head must be spinning! But you are right, I believe for the most part, people are really stepping up to help one another. I hope it continues that way. Keep your chin up!

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

Thank you so much for your kind words @jozkid!  I think the worry of my son is my biggest stressor.  Just knowing how a regular cold can affect him makes me very anxious about him being exposed to this.  Part of me wishes he would come home, but the other part of me thinks it's better for him to be in an area with less people/less confirmed cases.  At any rate, I am always looking to find the bright side of things, so the good news is that his specialists are doing video appointments so no need for him to travel home to go in (this was a big concern) and his area is on a shelter-in-place too which he has been taking seriously.  That's 2 wins in my book.  Thank you again, for commenting/reaching out.  I think my BIC family might just be what gets me through this.  ❤️

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

Happy April Fool’s Day everybody! Much love from South Florida! Well, teaching online has been more of an adventure than I anticipated, because getting kids to sign in and participate in online discussions is tough, especially for the kids that have to share their devices with siblings. Flexibility is the name of the game for the next MONTH... May 1st feels like lifetime from now... But at least no hackers have invaded my classes and posted porn, which has happened to some of my colleagues, so disturbing. I hope everybody is hanging in there and staying healthy. Sending everybody virtual hugs and healthy vibes 🥰

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

First of all, big shout out and lots of love to you, @LCResz, and all other teachers!  I love your attitude of "flexibility is the name of the game"!  I think this can be applied to life in general right now.  I am so sorry you all have to worry about hackers doing crap like that!  😞  I just can't believe how freaking horrible and disgusting some people can be.  I really hope that doesn't happen to you and your kids.  Hugs!!

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

@LCResz Our school board is starting online classes from Monday. We have separate devices for all three of our kids and still I’m not sure how is it gonna work. How much of supervision or help I may have to provide them. They are pretty much self sufficient when it comes to school work but keeping them focused on their devices might be a chore for both little ones. Now this news about hackers is worrying me. People are sick, who does such horrible thing in children’s class.

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

@LCResz I heard people jumping in to classes had become a problem ! Like people don't have enough problems, who does that to kids! Glad it hasn't happened to you!

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

@Kim888 That's my thinking exactly! Why invade classes? I hope these people can be tracked down and prosecuted for distributing illicit materials to minors but I doubt it. Honestly, it shocked my colleagues more than the students, I guess kids today grown up a lot faster and are used to being exposed to more stuff online than we ever wanted to admit.

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

@LCResz   As disturbing as it is, popping into sites uninvited is the way those porn sites build business.  They hope to catch someone's interest, then get them hooked.  Even some of the ads on YouTube aren't far off from being classified as porn.  They really know how to reach their target audience.  If only they used their powers for good.

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

@LCResz Not the kind of teachable moment you want!!!! Glad there is this online option though, I'm guessing it is a relief for parents.

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

This situation does have me worried. We live in an area that's getting harder hit than others and we're due to see the top of the curve in a couple of weeks. Local health professionals post all the time on our community Facebook page asking for donations of masks or other supplies. They sound so exhausted. Yet we still have people (like my neighbors across the street) who insist on hanging out with their next door neighbors and their kids like nothing's going to hit them. And we ran into an acquaintance in the supermarket on Sunday who told us he thought this was all "overblown." How the heck are you supposed to handle that?

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

@jozkid Sending you distant hugs!!! I feel your frustration. This situation is so much bigger than your own personal choices, but so many people are still going about their regular business as if it's some sort of badge of honor! The whole, I gotta live my life, government can't tell me what to do! Great job champ, way to be an a--hole at the expense of literally everyone around you. Nurses and doctors are venting young people, getting a face full of virus, while wearing re-used PPE, but by all means, god-forbid you refrain from a few Sunday bottomless-mimosa brunches. Staying home and social distancing are LITERALLY the LEAST amount that people can do. Our governors are asking people to do LITERALLY NOTHING so we don't end up with thousands and thousands of lives needlessly gone too soon.

NYC has leased 40+ cold storage trailers in anticipation that their morgues will reach capacity in the next couple of weeks. If that isn't sobering, I don't know what else is.

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

Hey there @MissPuff ! I know you know what I'm dealing with, neighbor. I really wanted to dope slap the guy who said it was overblown, but then I would've had to get close to him — and who knows who he's exposed himself to (oooh, that didn't sound right!)

I have a good friend who lives in NYC and she posts stuff all the time about the conditions there. I saw the photo of the refrigerated morgue trucks. That was rather disturbing. That alone would keep me indoors.

Keep safe, doll.

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

@jozkid  on the news here, there are updates all the time, and they say that 95% of the tests are negative.  then there are some places where they don't have any cases.  so, that DOES make it sound overblown, but I guess it depends on where you live.

Re: Health and Sanity Check-Ins

@treestar86   I keep saying to myself that because this is a new disease that people are treating it as they would something familiar, because there is so much that is unknown.  It's understandable, but a little disconcerting.

I've been reading (a lot!) of reports that state that several states look like they are flattening the curve earlier than expected, which is wonderful news.

Another possible bit of good news I read is that there are probably waaayyy many more cases than originally thought, and some occurred way earlier than suspected.  That would mean that the fatality rate (as awful as it is,) may not be any higher than the yearly flu.

The trouble is, this virus is so much more contagious, sneaky, and is very opportunistic.
