Getting Personal

I just wanted to tell you guys how much you help me out.  I suffer from EXTREME Depressive Disorder. I'm actually on Disability for it even though I was able to get a Degree with a Concentration and 2 Minors at NCState and work till I was 30.  This board has helped me to interact with other people instead of going into myself. It''s gotten me to get up, get dressed, AND put makeup on Smiley Wink, and laugh (really hard).  I even got to do something for someone else with TSB and went out to the Post Office twice that day (my parents were in shock I think Smiley Happy  So I just wanted to thank you so much for just being apart of this board because if you wern't on it, it wouldn't be the same!

Re: Getting Personal

You all are so nice to take the time to give me all this great air travel advice and the pep talks!  I have avoided flying my entire life, even when the company I worked for was paying for me to fly for training courses, I would rent a car instead and drive all day to avoid flying.  One time a company I worked for was sending me to Atlanta on short notice for a seminar and (since I wouldn't fly) I had to rent the only vehicle left in town which was a big luxury van that had a TV, a bed, table, curtains over the windows and seemed like it was 10 miles long, ha ha.  I cracked my head open on the TV first thing before I even started driving, ha ha.  My husband couldn't go with me so my mother rode with me and my daughter who was only about 2 years old then.  I had to drive at night through fog and construction zones and my mother had to run to the back of the van to look through the curtains to tell me if it was clear to change lanes, ha ha.  By the way, she cracked her head open on the TV, too, and my toddler cried through half the drive, ha ha.  Looking back on it now it seems pretty comical, but it was a horrible experience and all because of my fear of flying,  I have had other loooong driving experiences due to my fear of flying, so I'm hoping that I will get over my fear once I've actually flown.  However, my friend has never gotten over her fear and has to drug up and feels like she can't breathe every single time she flies.  I guess I'll find out how I react soon enough.  At least the flight is non-stop and the family is driving our luggage down so I will only have a carry-on with my makeup.  I would send that with them, too, except that they are leaving 2 days before us to stop in St. Augustine on their way to Orlando.  At the rate I'm reading Under The Dome, I will have to find another good book to read on the flight.  I plan to put hubby by the window and I'll sit in the aisle seat.  The particular plane we are taking has a row of 2 seats side-by-side and then the aisle, then a row of 3 seats side-by-side.  So at least my husband and I will be sitting side-by-side without anybody else right there with us too close while I'm freaking out, ha ha.  Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks again to all of you for your kind words of encouragement.

Re: Getting Personal

You've gotten some great advice! I just wanted to add that Dramamnie and Benadryl are both antihistamines, and they will both make you sleepy. So if you have to choose one over the other, take the Dramamine--don't take both or else you will be super dehydrated and zonked out! Your friendly Beauty Talk RN!!!

HAVE FUN!!!!!

Re: Getting Personal

@TennG:  My Girl, if I can put up  a picture of my ffat back for all to see we can get you to fly Smiley Wink  I, like many others, have been flying since I was young.  First back from Disney in 2nd grade (we took a train down and that was fun)with my family  and then in 3rd grade to take my bro around to look at colleges (I think that was only Boston)(he's the smart one)  Then when my Bro came home one summer he took private pilot lessons, I was flying those little planes at the age13.  In fact that's how we found out I needed glasses! Smiley Surprised Then he took stunt pilots lessons without telling our mom, and that was fun! But as others have said I flew by myself across the country at 14 when my Bro was at Stanford for graduate school and it was fine.  Personally I like the window seat b/c I can lay my head on it and fall right to sleep. I have flown A LOT in my life; Between work when I was young and the fact my college was flying time away from home. I have NEVER had even the slightest mishap. Even doing barrel rolls in a small Cessna with my Brother.  I'm trying to remember if you were the one that hadn't read the Twilight books yet. If you haven't read them then!  It will totally distract you.  Or if you have, read them again or get something else you heard is absorbing. My Mom is reading "Water for Elephants" and says its good.  I say read Twighlight.

Re: Getting Personal

@mermadelove:  Thanks for the medicinal RN advice!  You're right, I don't want to be zonked out the first couple of days of my vacation, ha ha! Smiley Happy

@katimae:  You make flying sound like a breeze!  OMG, I can't believe you went stunt-flying!  If you can do that, my soul-sister, then surely I can stand a less than 2 hour flight! Smiley Happy

Re: Getting Personal

Well, you may or may not have noticed that I've not been on Beauty Talk hardly at all in the past 2 to 3 weeks.  I just wanted to let everyone know that it's because my depression has worsened.  One week I was on vacation and was away from Beauty Talk, but right before my vacation and since I've gotten back, I've just been too depressed to log on to BT.  I've been trying to log on every couple of days to check for PMs and give hearts to posts, but that's about it.  I have seasonal depression on top of my general depression, so it may be that with it being August and summer coming to a close that my seasonal depression is moving in early (I really don't know).  But, I did want to let you all know that the reason I've not been logged on is because I am struggling right now.  I thought I'd log on this morning to get caught up on all the threads I'm subscribed to and to force myself to get out of bed for a while.  It's still a little early, but I'm going to try to log on a little later and answer some BT questions.  Thanks for listening...

Re: Getting Personal

@tenngal: I know I'm a little late, since you wrote it last week or so, but always remember that BT wouldn't be the same without you and you've got people who love you here Smiley Wink

Re: Getting Personal

For a change I have something really cool to add to this page.  I just found out that my picture is going to be in a book! it's called

Dead Letters: The Very Best Grateful Dead Fan Mail [Hardcover]  written by Paul Grushkin   and  Forward by Bill Walton

If you look it up on Amazon and then go to looking randomly inside the book like they let u do and get to page 28 on the lower left hand side there is a pic of my not yet boyfriend and eventually first x husband Steve Marcus, then me, then my best friend at the time Jen Padjett Senkowsi and the girl behind us name is Sara.  It's an awesome  book written by a very renown author in the rock world and the forward written by one of the more famous dead heads. (He's a famous basketball player, you never wanted to get the seat behind him at a show lol)

So now I've been in a picture in Rolling Stone Magazine, on a movie they played at ever show with screens on either side of the band with me (and a few others) dancing, and now in a book,  Seems like I'm bound to be famous in Grateful Dead land no matter what I do.  LOL

Highlighted

@katimae:  That's so awesome that your picture is in that book!!!  I am for sure going to look for it!  I think you are destined to be in the Dead Head Hall of Fame, ha ha! Smiley Happy
