BIC book club!

Some of us here have expressed an interest in a book club, myself, @mermadelove, @LCResz, @ZombieMetroAnt, @Mcakes. If you'd be interested in joining, reply below. My initial thought was to mail the books around but if it means that some people can't participate, then I'm all for dropping that requirement. I'd love this to be a place where we nominate our favorite book and others can read it and comment. Something fun for the new year!  ETA: the booklist:

Re: BIC book club!

Hi, @IndyQT317 !  I didn't know about National Book Reading Day!  Smiley Sad

I haven't heard of that book.  I'd love to hear your thoughts when you're done!  Enjoy!

Re: BIC book club!

So would Friday work for starting the discussion of The Book Thief?

Re: BIC book club!

Ooh, I have the Book Theif (and the Wedding Dress). I will maybe pause the book I’m reading now to see if I can read the Boof Theif in enough time. And if not, I’ll start on the next book.

@prettyinpa Do you mind/want to try starting a new thread for the next discussion? I think also maybe bolding the title you’re currently on or the next one up with a date of discussion next to it, might be helpful so it’s more clear from the main thread what people are focusing on? Idk, it might be helpful, or it might just be more of the same. Feel free to ignore me......

Re: BIC book club!

@snoflakefaerie- That's a good idea about starting a new thread for each book discussion. I don't think we could be accused of spamming the boards, lol. I also edited the main list per your idea, thanks!

Hey book loves! I wasn't sure when to start the next book...

Hey book loves! I wasn't sure when to start the next book. I kept circling back to the thread for an update. Lol. I will catch the next book to keep upπŸ˜‰

Re: Hey book loves! I wasn't sure when to start the next book...

For what it's worth @IndyQT317 , I start the next book within a few days after I post my comment(s) about the current book.  I never know how long it will take me to read a given book, so I start as soon as I can.

Re: Hey book loves! I wasn't sure when to start the next book...

Thanks @Titian06 that does help. I will do that going forward. Also ladies I won't read The Wedding Dress after all. I will jump back in on The Fault in our Stars. I have read it prior, but will reread it to jog my memory.

Re: BIC book club!

@prettyinpa I’m halfway through The Book Thief and I find it a very easy read. I think I’ll be done by Friday.

Re: BIC book club!

@fatimamummy-  Would it work better for you if we waited until Monday? I probably won't be on BIC much this weekend but I didn't want @Titian06 to forget so I just chose Friday.

Re: BIC book club!

@prettyinpa- How thoughtful of you!  I think I'll make it through the weekend.  Now if you were talking two or three weeks...

Re: BIC book club!

@prettyinpa Monday is more ideal. With kids being home, day to day routine is very unpredictable sometimes πŸ˜€ So let’s talk about it onMonday!

Re: BIC book club!

Good point, @fatimamummy- Monday it is, thanks for helping me decide.

Re: BIC book club!

@prettyinpa @fatimamummy - Monday works for me.

Re: BIC book club!

Hey, all, I finished reading The Book Thief this weekend.  No hurry for anyone else to start or finish.  I just want to let you know.  I'm going to read a book of Erma Bombeck's newspaper columns while I wait.

Over my vacation last month, I read The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked a Hornets Nest.

Re: BIC book club!

I finished The Book Thief too, @Titian06. Do you want to start discussion soon? Actually, are we the only ones left, lol?

Re: BIC book club!

Hi @prettyinpa@& @Titian06, I've been stalking the thread, in the shadows, waiting for one that grabbed my attention that I haven't read before. I can rejoin you for The Wedding Dress.

Re: BIC book club!

That's great, @RachFace2921!  I was reading the abstract for the book and it sounds like it could be interesting.

Re: BIC book club!

@prettyinpa @Titian06

If I had realized this book was on the list, I would have bought it when I saw it used for $2 since it looked interesting.  Anyhow, I read your post and it looked like people were participating less...?  Would it be worth it to create a new list?  For me personally, many of the books thus far I either read already, saw on-screen, or just wasn't interested in.  IDK...just food for thought!

1. Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng (16) - I was late to the game with this one, would have gotten a copy if I'd been on time.
1. Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie (16) - Read already
3. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (13) - Read already
4. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (11) - Read already
4. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson (11) - Saw on-screen
4. Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie (11) - No interest
7. Exit West by Mohsin Hamid (10)
7. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (10) - Read already; saw on-screen

Re: BIC book club!

@greeneyedgirl107 @prettyinpa - Was a good size list of people who said they would like to participate.  From that group only a few people post comments.  I have no idea whether the others are reading the books and choosing not to post.  If only a few of us are actually participating, then I think we may want to concider the timetable given per book.

I am open to altering the list, but most of the books I am not familiar with or I know, but did not read in school.  There are several I am looking forward to, but a few I plan to skip.

Re: BIC book club!

@Titian06 @greeneyedgirl107@prettyinpa

I'm just popping in to comment, since I was one of the people who said they were interested but hasn't been able to participate. My biggest problem is timing when ebooks are available from my library and when other people are reading it. It's especially difficult with the more popular titles as the waiting list from my library were hundreds of people. Unfortunately, I am not in a position (or perhaps desire) to be spending money on books when I can get so many great ones for free from my library if I am willing to wait.

I've also stayed away from the thread because I would like to read many of the books on the list and didn't want to spoiler myself. I don't know if having separate threads for each book would be helpful or if that will just overcrowd BIC with off topic stuff that most people aren't interested in. But that at least would be super helpful to know when people are reading what and to be able to stay away from the books I haven't read yet.

Anyway, I'm sorry that y'all haven't had the participation that was originally hoped for. I will also admit to having my personal life get in the way. I totally missed being able to download some of the titles I had been waiting forever for due to my brain being elsewhere and getting discouraged that it will take another couple months before they become available again Smiley Sad

ETA: also given the cluster that is the search function on these boards, it's really difficult to go back and find where people discussed a book if I was able to finally get to it, which would maybe be another reason to have separate discussion threads for each book.

Re: BIC book club!

I definitely understand what you're saying @snoflakefaerie .  I'm really glad you stopped by to say something.  One of the early books I bought because the wait list was horrendous.  I wasn't very happy to buy it, but I've since let it to two other people.  I like your idea about separate threads.  I never thought about people discussing at other times.  That may be something to look into.  Yes, the search function within a thread is nonexistent.  Many threads could be so much more useful if you could search within!
