๐ŸŽƒ important information for all potential Ghoulfriends...

Spoiler
๐Ÿ‘ป ELIGIBILITY

Have you participated in a gift exchange on BT/BIC previously?

Yes
Previous participants in exchanges that either MCakes, @prettyinpa  or I have hosted without incident on their part are pre-approved. If you participated in an exchange that MCakes, PrettyinPA or I have not hosted, please kindly provide a link to that exchange thread for us to do our due diligence. If there were no issues from the exchange on your part, we are excited to have you on board!

No
Meet one or more of the following requirements:

1.Must be willing to do a $50 box deposit that will be taken at sign up and returned once your Ghoulfriend has given us confirmation of delivery.
2.Must be vouched for by 2 members of the community who PrettyinPA or I are familiar with.

*Since we are trying to be as inclusive as possible while also protecting other participants in this exchange, PrettyinPA and I will have final discretion on participant eligibility. We realize that this is very subjective, but we must establish a certain degree of trust between users as there is sensitive information being exchanged. Thank you for your understanding.

๐Ÿ‘ป RULES

By expressing interest in signing up for the exchange, you are agreeing to the following:

-The minimum spend for this exchange is $50. You do not need to go over this amount, but in the spirit of fairness you may not go under it.

-If you have not participated in an exchange previously, you must ship your gift on or before October 21st. If you miss this deadline and do not communicate with PrettyinPA or I about the reason for your delay, you will not get your box deposit back. Instead, we will use your box deposit to create a gift on your behalf. No Ghoulfriend will be left behind!

-Provide tracking number(s) to PrettyinPA or I once you have shipped your gift. This can be done via Elfster or messaging PrettyinPA or I.

-Acknowledge receipt of your gift ASAP, even if you need a little more time to do a full post. This is a courtesy to your giftor to know it was received (it is stressful waiting to know if a package made the journey ok!) and for PrettyinPA and I to keep track of the progress in the exchange. You may do this via Elfster, by posting on this thread that you have received the parcel, or by messaging either PrettyinPA or I.

-You must post pictures of your gift. This is an integral part of the exchange experience and we want to share in the excitement with you! We know how much thought and care goes into curating a gift, and we want to acknowledge your giftor's efforts as well. You may provide pictures for either PrettyinPA or I to post on your behalf if you are having issues posting, but please know that the pictures are a firm requirement.

๐Ÿ‘ป KEY DATES

Draw Day (This is the day you find out who you are shopping for, yay!): 10/1/19

๐ŸŽƒ Tips, Tricks & Other spooktacular ideas!

Spoiler
๐Ÿ’€ Elfster Tips:

-> Ask questions! Anyone can ask anyone an anonymous question, that will help you get a better idea of likes and dislikes, haves and wants, etc. It is important to note of any dietary restrictions

->When you purchase something, click "Mark As Purchased." They won't see it, but they might be using the same wishlist for other gift exchanges, so this can prevent them potentially getting the same gift from two different people.

->If you got something for yourself, remove it from your wishlist!

๐ŸŽƒ Shipping suggestions:

Spoiler

How to ship abroad/add a customs label while still using online shipping:

1. Creating an account: First, you must create a free account on the USPS website. The paypal.com/shipnow site will not let you create customs forms.

2. Shipping Label: To create the shipping label, you want to use the "Click n Ship" function from the dropdown menu under Mail & Ship. Many of the directions from above are basically the same but the key difference is under, "Where are you sending to?" you will need to use the dropdown menu to select the country of choice.

3. Finishing the Shipping Label:Fill in all the corresponding information until the end of the form including the value of the package. The Canadians on the board may have more to speak to with this but I always kept this amount on the lower side so the recipient doesn't get hit with high customs fee. (average amount I would put would be $10-$20) A great feature is at the end of the page it will give you all your options for shipping. I can tell you on a personal note that when I ship to England I always choose first class international mail and I have never had a problem. Once again, delivery confirmation is thrown in for FREE.

3. Beginning the Customs Form: You will then get to a page that will you through step by step filling in the customs form. The first question will ask you to "Enter Package Information." This is where you can just write this is a gift box for a friend. You do not need to write anything more!

4. Customs Inventory: Next up is, "Enter Item Information." Okay, this one is a little tricky. If you want to itemize, and fill in every single thing in the box, you can. If you only want to do a couple, you can. I've done both over the years and both have been okay. I'm not going to tell you though that it will work every time so ultimately, the decision is up to you. Make sure though that you mark each item a GIFT so that the recipient does not get charged increased fees. Also, and this is IMPORTANT, the total that adds up for the all the items has to be the same total you gave on the previous page for the value of the box. So if you make something worth $1, that's fine! (Again, Canadians speak up hear if I'm wrong but my abroad friends always told me it was better to do this to reduce customs fees for the recipient.) Lastly, each weight of each individual item will need to add up to the to the total weight item, so I've honestly literally made up ratio numbers in the past. (I have never had a problem in years of sending packages)

5. Tarrif Number: Lastly, you do not have a tariff number so leave that blank. Okay, one last thing, choose your AES exemption. I would choose the second one having to do with gifts.

6. Obtaining the Label/Customs Form: The steps following this are similar to the ones from above except that I believe the payment options for USPS may also include credit card options as well as PayPal. Go ahead and print your label which will also contain your completed customs form. (Please note: you may need to sign your customs form before affixing it to your package) On a positive note, YOU STILL SAVE MONEY BY USING THE ONLINE POSTAGE SYSTEM!

7. How to actually ship it:For international packages, my personal advice is yes, bring it to the post office, and yes, actually check it in and get a receipt saying it was checked in by a postal worker. Since many international packages take quite longer than domestic and tend to get delayed at different intervals, you want to make sure that everything is okay when it first enters the system.

Duty info (thanks Veronika23 Heart):

The US can receive a gift up to 100$ USD. If you are sending a gift from Canada and mark it as 100$ you are actually saying it cost you 100$ CAD. Today Google converts that to 73.30$ USD so your recipient should be ok and not pay additional fees.

Canada can receive a gift up to 60$ CAD. If you are sending a gift from the US and it was 60$, you are actually saying it cost you 60$ USD. Today Google converts that to 81.86$ CAD. So your Canadian recipient in this case might pay duties/taxes/fees. But if your gift only cost you is lets say 35$ USD today Google converts that to 47.75$CAD. So the recipient shouldn't pay fees.

I believe customs will check the rate on the day the item is processed.

For the US ladies. The cheapest way to ship to Canada is via USPS First Class International mail.

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

Wow! Your ghoulfriend is speedy, @CC3616! I'm with you over here still hemming and hawing about which things I want to pick up, haha.

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

So excited for the boxes. I finally started shopping this weekend, and found some awesome goodies. I also placed a few orders and cant wait to get my goodies in the mail so I can put my box together and send it to my awesome ghoul friend. Love this time, and just October in general, and cant wait to see all the unboxings.

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

I gotta say, I only do Halloween when I can think of a costume for the work contest and I don't give out candy. But, it's been really fun shopping for Halloween and coming up with Box ideas. I already bought what I decided on and am just waiting to get my orders.  So excited to put it together!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

@Buootiful I love Halloween. Sadly for me, my area has become almost exclusively trunk or treating. And get this, there was a movement to change the celebration day!

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

@Samtian that is so depressing. I live in an apartment so you can sign up to have kids in the building trick or treat at your door if you want them too but there's really only a couple in the building so I don't get many either.

they still do regular trick or treating where I grew up though. I think some people tried to suggest the trunk thing and a bunch of other people got annoyed haha. My parents live on a dead end street now though so I don't think they get a ton anymore.

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

UGH. We've had similar issues, @Samtian. Like, Halloween is Halloween- you can't just up and shift the day! Are we also going to start moving Christmas to a Saturday every year??

The whole trunk or treating thing just breaks my cold, dead heart though. Growing up, our neighborhood easily saw 300 trick-or-treaters (probably way more) each Halloween. Now, I live not far from there and we get maybe 20.

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

@Samtian-  I had to Google trunk or treat- I'd never heard of it before. Which left me with many questions. Why would people do this? Why can't they just give out candy at their doors like the proper way? Who cares what their trunks look like, unless it's an unsubtle way to show off your car? Very puzzling.

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

@prettyinpa I'm so sorry for the delay! I've been working graves. So I live in a very very Mormon area. They started the whole thing in our area. Eventually other churches and now the police do it as well. They see it as "safer." And that they can control it and decide the times and what not. It's also been said its their way of letting the kids participate with out going against the Lord. I'm not looking to get into religious debates, I'm just stating some of the things. Here is an article with the Church's stance on Halloween, basically they seem to avoid the topic haha ldsliving dot come/What-the-Church-Has-Said-About-Halloween/s/86783

Now as for trying to change the day. Like I said very Mormon area, and Sunday's are days the state is pretty much shut down haha. That was always a tricky day growing up when it fell on Sunday, like is anyone going out tonight or no? Beyond that they also aren't happy when it falls on a day where kids will be in school the next day. But anything on a school night they try to change. They have successfully gotten other holiday to be celebrated on other days in our area.

It is super depressing to me. I loved trick or treating. If I had kids I'd take them! I'd take anyone's kids haha it is such a blast.

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

@prettyinpa @Samtian *Back in my day, we used to trick or treat door to door.*  I haven't been trick or treating since I was 19, way back in 2002, but I've been so excited to be an adult and be on the other end of the trick or treat door.

In 2009, I got excited because I moved into a house (in a bad part of Boston) and I thought people would be trick or treating because I knew there were kids around and lots of other houses.  I went out bought those cellophane treat bags, and little pencils and erasers, small party favors like mazes and puzzles, stickers, and of course, candy.  I put together like 50 bags because I was in a populated part of the city and sure that I was going to get so many trick or treaters.  I had a friend come over, and we waited for the kids to come.  And waited.  And waited.  Finally, around 9 pm I gave up and realized nobody was coming so I went to a 24 hr diner to drown my sorrow in waffles.

I thought the lesson here was that people don't trick or treat in a city because neighborhoods can be sketchy and since malls offer trick or treat programs, it's more appealing for kids to do that then have them roam the streets.  I just moved to the burbs now and have learned that it's not just inner city trick or treating that has been killed, but all trick or treating everywhere.  Even here in the burbs, I think I'm 20 miles outside of DC, and I've asked neighbors about trick or treating and they say no one does it here.  I can also verify that in the burbs in San Francisco, again, highly populated, super safe neighborhood, NOBODY did trick or treat.

I have no idea if they did trunk or treat or if they did the mall trick or treating, but they definitely didn't do normal trick or treating.  I can't believe trick or treating is dying.  It's so sad and I think it's a great way to teach kids a little bit of independence (depending on their age), get them walking around the neighborhood, meeting people, and it's just an all around good time.  It's kind of sad that we're all so anti-social now and afraid of our own shadow that we don't feel comfortable to send kids to the next door neighbor's for candy.

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

@itscarin  omg this is heartbreaking!!! I live in Wetern Mass and I have to say trick or treating is alive and well in the neighborhoods out here! We have trunk or treating at the elementary schools. @prettyinpa  The PTO has games and sells tickets for the games as a fund raiser. People can vote on their favorite decorated trunk and the winner gets bragging rights but itโ€™s a fun way for the community to spend time together. We also have a Halloween parade that starts at the town green and ends at the town hall where the kids get treat bags. THEN they go trick or treating door to door and people go all out decorating their houses and porches and give out everything from store bought to home made treats and even toys and safety lights, drinks and water!,,... the toys, etc are a recent addition to accommodate kids with allergies.  Last year we had such perfect fall weather with just a hint of drizzle towards the end of the night. It was like something out of a movie!! Maybe you should all come trick or treating by me for Halloween!!!!! 3157F4B2-1A91-4E3B-A5CB-BF3E640D0AF8.gif

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

That sounds like heaven, @mermadelove. I'm definitely moving! HA! I have so many wonderful memories of trick-or-treating from when I was a little, I just hate that so many kids are missing out on that now.

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

@quspork to be fair last year was ultra magical because the weather was so perfectly Halloween like! I wish I could have filmed it!

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

@mermadelove I remember trick or treating in 49 degree weather with rain. Trick or treating where it gets cold is hilarious because you have a costume and then you have a coat that goes over it. โ€what are you supposed to be?โ€

Iโ€™m surprised your neighborhood does homemade treats!  When and where I was growing up I knew people used to do homemade treats but we were definitely advised by parents and the media to only accept store bought candy that was inspected by adults for tampering prior to eating it.

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

@itscarin Haha it's either super windy or snowing on Halloween here. I don't remember ever going out without either a dozen layers of thermals or coats.

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

@itscarin I briefly lived in VT and everyone MADE costumes to fit over snowsuits because you never know if youโ€™re gonna be trick or treating in a snow storm!!

Also, the area we live in is pretty close knit. Although itโ€™s pretty populous , everyone knows everyone else so homemade treats arenโ€™t rare. They are plastic wrapped, labeled with ingredients and the name and address of who made them!

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

@mermadeloveAww that's so cool.  Your town sounds like a Norman Rockwell painting!

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

@itscarin it kind of is in a Norman Rockwell meets roller derby kind of way! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

Oh my gosh @itscarin Smiley Sad  that makes me appreciate our bundle of trick-or-treaters even more now.  Usually 4 large bags from Costco will hold us over for a couple hours.  The streets are filled to the brim with kids and their parents and I love seeing all their creative costumes.

After the stork delivers your bundle of joy, you're just gonna have to come visit Heart

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

@ZombieMetroAnt That's a lot of candy!  I don't think we ever went through more than two bags of candy at my house growing up.

I saw an add for Reese's peanutbutter cups last night and the jist of it was, "turn off your lights and eat our candy all by yourself".  I thought that was kind of scroogey at first, but now that we're all talking about trunk-or-treat and mall trick or treating, I wonder if it's in response to a decline in trick or treating.

It's weird that it seems like trick-or-treating is alive and well in some parts, but dead in other.  I wonder what that says about the culture of places with respect to whether they trick or treat or not.

Re: ๐ŸŽƒ A Haunting We Will Go โ˜  Halloween elf Exchange (2019)

@ZombieMetroAnt ,

What you describe is a lot like what Trick or Treating is like here where I live.

On Halloween night, for several hours, little neighborhood kids in their costumes come to our door and we hand out candy from Costco.  Halloween is still alive here!

There is also Trunk Trick or Treating going on, one night in the week before Halloween, at a Church parking lot, where neighborhood families get together.  Halloween is The favorite holiday of so many people here.  Yards get decorated to the extreme!
