4th of July Plans?

Well, the 4th of July falls on Thursday this year.  So if you take off Friday, it gives you a four-day weekend!  What are your plans for the 4th?

I really only have a 3-day weekend since my mom's birthday is Thursday (yes, she is a Yankee Doodle Dandy) which means the 4th is spent with her which I don't mind.  She's lovely!   But after that I need suggestions.....it is really hot here and I'm feeling uninspired.

Re: 4th of July Plans?

I don't really have any plans set up just yet for the 4th. I've been playing with the idea of making some sort of delicious dessert (perhaps apple pie?) and perhaps meeting up with friends or just celebrating with my family.

Whimsically yours,
Janine

Re: 4th of July Plans?

Sorry, no great inspirations for you here.  My sister's birthday is the 4th but I don't know if we'll get together or not.  I have no gift ideas for her yet.  Unless she wants to get together I think my husband will take time to cook something more complicated than usual.

I have Friday off (and he doesn't) so I'm going to see my mom.  She recently had surgery and should just be at the point where she's allowed to go out but she won't be able to drive.  So if she's up for it I'll take her off to run errands, etc, and then take her out to lunch.  So exciting.

Re: 4th of July Plans?

We do the same thing every year.  Grill out, set off fireworks, and sleep in a tent in the back yard with the kids.

Sorry I don't have any inspired ideas for you.  We're simple people - we basically just honor our country's July 4th tradition of setting things on fire and drinking beer while doing it.  (With "camping" and smores thrown in for the kids!)  Smiley Happy

Re: 4th of July Plans?

My husband and I are going to take our dogs to the beach for a picnic lunch!

Re: 4th of July Plans?

I want to go kayaking if the water levels in the river cooperate. It's been very heavy rains in PA lately, so the water is really high, making some parts dangerous. If the water receeds a bit, it will be great as normal summer water levels are a bit low and I have to drag the kayak over mud flats and sandbars. I have a big ocean going 2 seater kayak, so the whole family including big dog can fit.   Pack a picnic lunch and snacks for all and paddle the day away. Smiley Happy

Re: 4th of July Plans?

That sounds like fun!  Water levels are too low here for decent kayaking or just floating.  We really need some rain!  I've been to PA...it is beautiful!

Re: 4th of July Plans?

We'll probably just watch fireworks and grill out I love summer!

Re: 4th of July Plans?

My family never plans until the day of! But every year everyone comes over and someone BBQ's and we go watch some fireworks! And the very next day is my Birthday!! I will most likely go to the movies this weekend since its soo hot!

Re: 4th of July Plans?

Happy Birthday and Happy 4th!  There are some good movies out right now and always a good way to beat the heat. Smiley Happy

Re: 4th of July Plans?

Thanks @Rikkie! It's going to be super hot unfortunately. I'm not an outdoor person so i will be inside!

Re: 4th of July Plans?

I am so with you on the staying indoors! Have tasty grilled food brought inside and I am all over it though! Smiley Very Happy

Re: 4th of July Plans?

@arielaaaaaaaa- Happy B'Day  July 5th! Hope your B'Day and the 4th are great for you!

Re: 4th of July Plans?

How fun! I love the fireworks show put on downtown by the bay, so fun to see when you have a good view! The only thing is the horrible crowd of people and the heat wave this week are making me not so encouraged to watch.. Maybe another part of the city would be fun to check them out at but I have no real plans except staying in and helping my mom who recently was in the hospital and needs some extra care. =/

Maybe I'll cook something fun like a red white and blue dish (Everyone has seen those Betty Crocker pound cakes with cool whip and berries right?) or a yummy potato salad which I've been craving!

(in my hunt for the cake I found THIS which looks incredible!)

Re: 4th of July Plans?

They do look yummy!  I usually make my mom a birthday cake decorated like the one above since it's the 4th.  I bake a yellow cake mix in a 9 X 13 pan.  While it's warm, poke holes in the cake with a fork and pour sweetened condensed milk over it.  Let it cool, cover with whipped topping and decorate with blueberries and strawberries like a flag.

I may try to recreate the cake on the bottom for something different this year.  It doesn't look too hard, just a bundt pan and food coloring.  Thanks for posting pics!

Re: 4th of July Plans?

If you do try the bottom one I recommend getting gel food coloring and not the liquid drops as the color is much more concentrated. I don't know if you have done these before, if so then ignore me, but it can be the difference between this

and this

Colorwise at least, lol. No guarantees on the presentation!

Re: 4th of July Plans?

Yes, I use Wilton's gel food coloring, but it would take a lot to get colors as sharp as the bottom cake.  I also don't think I could cut those layers that perfect, even after freezing my layers and cutting them.  It is pretty though.  Looks like everyone enjoyed the cake on top though!  Smiley Happy

Re: 4th of July Plans?

Wilton's is what I go with for sure! You do have to add more than you would for icing but I have made a rainbow cake like this and it did turn out that bright! I must admit my layers were not that perfect though. But if you don't cut your whole cake in half for a picture it's less obvious. Those are thick layers too, I've made this recipe below  with 3 x 9" circles cut into halves. The homemade espresso toffee on top and crumbled between the layers makes it amazing!

I can't wait to be able to bake again. All I have at the moment is a toaster oven and no cake pans. Smiley Sad

Re: 4th of July Plans?

Totally enabling BAKING here (amazing it's not make up this time Smiley Tongue), but if you Google "Microwave mug cakes" it pulls up a site called Number 2 Pencils and it contains 30 recipes where you microwave baked goods in mugs for perfect mini portions and to get baked goodies without cake bans or even an oven! They have cheesecakes, chocolate, chocolate and peanut butter, sugar cookie, almond cake, and all sorts!

Re: 4th of July Plans?

Oooh, I have seen the idea of making cake in a mug, but I didn't know you could do so many things! I may break down and try it out if I can't wait another week and a half for something sweet.  Thanks!

Re: 4th of July Plans?

You're welcome! I have to STOP myself from making these because my mind just goes "C'mooooon, it's just ONE mug!!!!" But then I realize I would make mug after mug after mug....you see where I'm going with this!

Re: 4th of July Plans?

That looks delicious!  If I google the recipe, what is it called?
