Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Welcome to Year 7 of our Pan It! Challenge ElleElleG_0-1704168084184.gif

ElleElleG_9-1704168647118.jpeg

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi I suspected seeing how long shadows would take to use up would slow your purchases... watching you has slowed MY purchases! lol.  Interesting to see how preferences change over the course of one palette though! I'm so tempted to try this with something larger in my stash... but oufff... panning shadows, not for the faint of heart!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@missjeanie, it's been a journey to say the least, with making my way through the full size Biba palette. lol, there's definitely a deterring effect for me as far as purchasing goes, seeing how long it takes to work through eyeshadows. 😲 I don't have enough eyelids to use up all my current shadows 🤣 and yet, I have a feeling I will at some point pick up more shadows (that's the truth) , but I will aim to be more strategic and thoughtful about it. I'm thinking for me personally, smaller palettes, quads make a good fit; or, I should say quints as Dior does quints and I have a good amount of Dior products I've accumulated over the past few years. 😍

Yeah, but for that lockdown, I would not have even attempted to pan this palette - I needed something to focus on and stick to, and eyeshadow from the full size Biba, every single day - every. single. day - at least for the first year and most of the second, was that something. 😅 I'm focusing on those prarie and rustic shades for these last 7 months of the year - the shine shade I feel will work through itself just given my natural tendency to reach for that shade out of these three. My next "hmmm, maybe I'll try that" approach to use more of these shades is to take some product from their pans and make cream eyeshadow out of them - either 3 different creams or one with a mix of all 3. 🤔 I have my vitamin E oil, rubbing alcohol and plastic jars so I just need to decide what I'd like to try my hand at, and when.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi  ohhhhh diy cream shadows you say… well this is a project I think you should document!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Will do @missjeanie. Probably a project for next weekend. 🤞 I am seeing upsides to it - I can use the cream shadow, of course, but I can also use the powder to set the cream shadow - that's 2 uses of the product = closer to hitting pan / full pan. 😂 Strategy comes in handy at this stage, lol.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

I'm so thrilled at the progress you've made @itsfi Seriously keeps me going on my products.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Awww! Likewise @AznAngelLiz! You are so good and disciplined with using what you have - it's inspiring and helps me to stay focused on my pan items as well. You pick some things that are challenging to use up and you stick with it. Powder products take a lot of time, or at least in my experience, and what? You have a trio with that Hourglass palette and then the bronzer. Woowhee! You go girl!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Oh that is a bummer it spilled all over your rug, @itsfi but now it's gone lol

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Yeah, I was halfway through with it too @lmaster. I came home after being away for a couple of days and went to wash up and what’s this bottle doing here? 😳

Have you used pre-wash hair oils? I’m getting the feeling these pre-wash hair oils are better suited for certain hair types - my hair is on the fine side and it doesn’t work as well for me as for those with thicker, more lush hair.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

I've used oils for pre wash but they were now specifically named that @itsfi yeah I think curly hair benefits more so, at least in my experience

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi Whooo amazing progress!!! Always blowing me away.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@Samtian, thank you. It was a good month for panning; came a little earlier than I thought - I expected end of July, but I think focusing on my body care pan items in May really moved things along. 👍🏼

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

End of June is my picture updates...maybe that'll help me start using things more haha. I did have some good progress on the Use it group this last month though!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Using it is a HUGE category of products @Samtian Great work!  You're showing such progress to goals!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

That's some great progress towards your usage goals @Samtian! I'm always amazed how you and others are so good about keeping track of your usage. I have a hard enough time with just remembering to do that with one product. 😂

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi You more than make up for it with all you remember about everyone else!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

All the progress I’ve made this year…I think I could’ve been done with the foundation if I was wearing makeup everyday but I’ve gone down to only doing my face once a week or so for the last few months. Still good progress though. Now I just need to find some other items to add to my pan list.

@AznAngelLiz You have done amazing!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

The Hourglass trio... dannnnnnng!  I have one of those and I can't even tell I ever used it.  Holy smokes that's great progress @AznAngelLiz !!!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Wowza @AznAngelLiz😍 My eyes kept getting bigger and bigger as I scrolled down your photos. That's some excellent work! 🙌🙌 That Hourglass palette!!! 👀 #inspired

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi I've been using that Hourglass palette with every single look...along with all the other products in the pictures. Trying to figure out what my next finishing powder should be.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

So impressive @AznAngelLiz! Look at all that pan! 😍 Oooouuuh, I'm interested to see what finishing powder you choose next. I find that to be harder than panning sometimes - figuring out what to work on panning next. Sometimes it's easy and I can use the next product as motivation to use up what I'm currently working on and other times, when I get close to being done with a product, I have a hard time thinking of what comes next since I'm so accustomed to having that one other thing to pan. 😅
