Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Welcome to Year 7 of our Pan It! Challenge ElleElleG_0-1704168084184.gif

ElleElleG_9-1704168647118.jpeg

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Love that you are committed to working through Il Makiage @AznAngelLiz! That's awesome that there are multiple shadows in the mini Biba. I'm super excited to see your progress.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@AznAngelLiz Ooh that is some amazing pan! Can't wait to see what shade you hit first in mini Biba!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Thanks @Samtian I'm actually excited to use mini Biba most of the time. We'll see how I feel about that in a couple months LOL

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Good luck @AznAngelLiz!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Thanks @faeriegirl I need it!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Good luck this year! @AznAngelLiz. This is a nice solid grouping and you've already come so far with your TF bronzer. ( That's impressive. 🤩) You'll be into LYS before you know it.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Seriously trying so hard to finish TF by end of Feb. I think I can do it even if I have to look like a clown some days due to over bronzing LOL @CynthieLu

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

You definitely got this, it'll be finished before you know it. @AznAngelLiz 😄

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Okay 2024!!!

I have 10 (11) items I'm looking to completely finish this year.  I tried to pick items that I like okay, but that I do not reach for naturally.  I don't need these in my collection, but I also feel bad 'wasting' them.  I have everything sitting in a bin in my washroom where I get ready.  Some of these may seem like easy peasy items, but I learned last year... that not everything is as it seems!

Spoiler
1. Vaseline Intensive Care -- This was in my 2023 project, it doesn't absorb fast so I tend to not reach for it, it also doesn't smell pretty so... again... I don't reach for it.
2. Smashbox Primer Water -- I'm just not a big primer person the last four or five years.  I do however appreciate a spray on product.  Since I put this in my project about a month and a half ago, I've managed to use a bit over half.  This one is rolling over so it gets used.
3. The Cream Shop Little Gold Mask -- This is a peeling mask.  Not my favourite but it's been sitting full for longer than it should.  I'm hoping putting it in the project will move it out of my house.  If there's a bonus for my skin... then I'm happy!
4. Too Faced Dew You Foundation -- This one is a decent match colour wise right now however it sits funny on my skin.  It slips around a lot and it just looks like foundation.  I'm hoping that if I play around enough I'll find some skincare or a primer that it works with and we can move it over to empties.  I have way too many foundations that I enjoy to keep one that is meh.
5. Pacifica Fragrance -- This one smells nice if not a bit basic.  The issue is that it's a rollerball that just doesn't deposit anything on my skin.  I'll need to perform surgery to make this one happen.
6.  Kiehl's Love Oil for Lips -- I just have too many lip products that I enjoy to reach for one that's meh.  I'm hoping this is a product that I can use up quickly, keeping it in my pocket for easy use.
7. Ouai Scalp Serum -- This is a product that I've now seen a few people fall in love with.  When I first tried it after getting it in gratis, it was fine, but I didn't see it doing anything.  It's a step in my routine that I'm just not used to so I'm hoping that putting it in my project I can get in the habit of using it and see the results others... ahemmmmm @itsfi ... love.
8.  GXVE eyeshadow quad -- This was a gratis product and one that I've clearly used.  It's been too used to pass on to someone who'd like these shades a bit more, and the shades aren't awful, they just aren't a favourite, the formula is just fine.  I do however hope that they're a way to use up a palette so that I can have a bit more space.  This is what I'm deeming an entry into shadow/palette panning.
9. It Cosmetics Brow Power Brow Pencil -- I used to use these.  I've since changed my routine over to using a tinted brow gel and nothing else.  I'm hoping to use this up so that it's not taking up space.  The Ulta clear brow gel is going to be an accompanying product.  I just don't use clear gels.  I'm hoping this will give me a reason to use it.
10. Joe Fresh Blue Eyeliner -- The eyeliner that just won't quit.  I used this liner on my upper lash line probably 5 days a week on average, every week of the year.  I thought this would be my 'gimmie' product in 2023 and I'm now so determined to finish it completely.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@missjeanie this is A great project! A good mix of products and a manageable amount. 1 definitely feel the struggle of those "gimme" products that don't seem to quit! I had a Joe fresh liner years ago and I remember it lasting forever too - so-long in fact that by the time I went replace it, the shade had been discontinued, cant wait to se new you do this Year!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@cianni Does Joe Fresh even do make up anymore?  It's been so eye opening the last few years seeing just how long some products really can last!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@missjeanie I believe you can still get a limited selection at Loblaws branded stores, but I used to pick it up at shoppers. According to google, shoppers started phasing out the line in 2018… I swear it doesn’t feel like 5 years ago that I had purchased joe fresh at a pharmacy! I don’t do a lot of my grocery shopping at loblaws so I don’t see the line anymore/have any idea what the selection is

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@cianni I'm only in either Shoppers or Loblaws randomly.  I know for a fact this eyeliner is ridiculously old.  As in I'm embarrassed that I'm still using it.  And at the same time impressed that it's still usable!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@missjeanie Youre not missing much - shoppers has gotten insanely expensive lately, for just about everything! I do recall my liner being super old too, but never drying out or not performing well, even at the end. And all for under $5 (I think?)

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@missjeanie good luck!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Thanks @lmaster !!  You too!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

Thank you @missjeanie 🎉

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@missjeanie, I’m feeling for you with that body lotion! You’re so close: sooo close. It’s gonna be one where slow and steady wins the race, but it’ll take everything you have to keep going. I wish there were a way we could make it more of an exciting product for you to use … hey, thinking aloud here … wondering if combining the Pacifica fragrance with the lotion would make it at least smell better?

Or what if you made your own foot mask with it? Since it already takes some time to absorb. Slather it on your feet, cover with Saran Wrap and wear a pair of socks, maybe even a double pair over that? 🤔

You & @Samtian will be pan buddies when it comes to that GXVE palette. I love the boring eye shadow palettes but completely get they don’t hold the same level of excitement for everyone else. 😆 Would pairing it with a shimmery shade each time you use it make if more fun for you?

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@missjeanie Ooh that is some nice pan already!!! @itsfi Haha I'm actually sitting it out this year.

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@Samtian Lol... that's the only shade I've really used!  The real trick will be using the others.  Fingers crossed though!

Re: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

@itsfi I've been contemplating combining a fragrance into the dang body lotion.  That may happen!  Once I figure out how to surgically remove the roller ball from that guy, it may suddenly empty a lot depending on how graceful of surgeon I am!

I actually like the GXVE formula just fine, and I tend to very much prefer mattes over shimmer shades.  I just find that the shades are warmer than I like.  If they were a bit cooler or rosier... then we'd be talking about buying backups!  I knew I wanted to try some kind of shadow panning and figured a quad was as adventurous as I could get and I wanted to try one that was going to be easier to use.  This one should be easy enough to use daily for me if I can give up my favourite mauve tones here and there!
