Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Hey all you cool cats and kittens, welcome to YEAR 6 of the Pan It Challenge!

ElleElleG_1-1672620471899.gif

**Join us in the 2024 thread available here: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Past Panning Challenges:

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@lmaster Excellent progress. I like when I can see the bottom of the product. The lipstick looks like it is getting a lot of use aswell 💄👍

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Thank you fabulous beauty 💜 @Mellmars1185

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Happy to report I have a used up image to share. I added sheet masks to my pan project this year. I had 100 at the start. Here is one set complete. Red I gave away, white I loved, black...detest isn't a strong enough word for those bear masks.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Whatever it was with the bear masks, I’m glad you’ve parted ways with them @Samtian. If it’s not a good fit (and I’m taking your take on “detest” to mean it really was not one your skin enjoyed 😓), better to bid adieu to it - by tossing it or passing it on.

Looking forward to seeing where you end up with those 100 sheet masks by December.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi They are just a complete pain to pop the ear to saturate the mask. Beyond that I didn't notice anything special about them for me.

ps I'm doing horrible at the mask project.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

I hear that on the bear masks @Samtian! I always had a hard time trying to pop that ear. Grrrr!!! 😠 I remember just giving up and reaching for a completely different mask on more than one occasion. 😆 It’s easier to pop one of those instant cold packs for muscle aches and pains than that ear!!

Your mask projects will see ebbs and flows, especially with the cold weather. I find I tend to reach for and go through hydrating sheet masks more quickly and easily when I traveled or in the spring or fall seasons when the temperatures are more moderate.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi I have to remember to take some with me on my trip. Yes that ear was a serious pain! Physically lol.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@Samtian -- bummer those bears are so bad. Yay for using up the others!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@Samtian  Hey at least they are gone 😉

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@Samtian @I have a few of these to work through as well. I don’t mind the mask itself though ‘popping the ear’ is a bit gimmicky to me too.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

I'm trying not to chuckle. I just love the space/night sky bear masks packaging so much but then I read they are waaaay below awesome, so chuckle removed. bummer!  But way to go getting them done @Samtian

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@CynthieLu I fell into the hype of them lol. Thank you!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

I would have to, I mean look at them 🤩🐻🌠 lol @Samtian

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@Mellmars1185 @lmaster Too much work! All the ones I tried were ridiculously hard to get the serum into the mask portion. Lol my masking sessions need to be relaxing not stressful.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Yes yes,, I remember now @Samtian I feel you there! But dang it the packaging is so cute

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@lmaster Yes it is!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@Samtian @I am curious as well about the bear masks

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

What was the problem with the bear masks? @Samtian

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

It's been about a month so it's time for my first pan it challenge update!

So far, I unfortunately haven't made as much progress as I hoped. Part of that was due to circumstances I couldn't really control - I was out of one of my medications for a while due to a manufacturer shortage, and I don't function so well without it, so I had a hard time keeping up with my skincare routine as much as I wanted to. I also found out a little after I set my goals for this challenge that I can't wear perfume to work anymore - apparently one or more coworkers are sensitive to fragrances so we were asked not to wear them. So I will have to get into the habit of wearing perfume only on days I don't have work.

Despite these setbacks, I have made at least a little progress toward (most of) my goals and I hope to do better in the coming months!

Skincare:

(3) Selfless by Hyram Centella & Green Tea Daily Gel Cleanser, LANEIGE Cream Skin Toner & Moisturizer 5.0 oz/ 150 mL , COSRX Hydrium Watery Toner

- goal for each: finish

- progress so far for each: used a few times

Glow Recipe Fruit Babies Bestsellers Kit

- goal: finish all & decide which ones to purchase the full size

- progress so far: used all several times

I have been really enjoying all of these minis (especially the toner and 2 serums). I have found that using them all makes a nice 'capsule' skincare routine for days when I don't have the time or energy to do my full routine, so I have often used them like that (or used them plus one or 2 other products). I am still trying to figure out a way to balance ideal goals vs. realistic expectations for my skincare routine. Hopefully I will be able to work out a happy medium between my current ambitious 10+ step routine (nice if I have time and energy, but not always doable depending on time + mental health) and skipping skincare altogether.

Bubble Skincare Come Clean Clay Mask

- goal: finish

- progress so far: none (not used this month)

I have really fallen off the wagon with masking this past month, so I will have to try to get back on track.

The Body Shop Strawberry Body Yogurt

- goal: finish

- progress so far: used several times, went from about 1/2 full to about 3/4 full

This was probably my most notable progress this past month - the end is in sight!

Makeup

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit Unlocked Face Palette (Butterfly)

- goal: use at least weekly

- progress so far: used 2-3 times

Hourglass Veil™ Translucent Setting Powder - Talc Free Translucent

- goal: use more & decide whether I like it or not

- progress so far: none (have not used this month)

I kind of forgot about this one, oops.

Glossier Stretch Concealer (G12)

- goal: hit pan

- progress so far: used regularly, but no visible change yet

Juvia's Place Wahala II Eyeshadow Palette

- goal: use every shade at least once

- progress so far: used 3 shades so far (Nawa oh!, Dope, & Bold)

Here's the first look I did with this palette:

Flower Beauty Blush Bomb Color Drops (Bubbly)

- goal: finish

- progress so far: used regularly

I usually use this as my main blush, often topped with a 2nd powder blush

Red lippies: Burt's Bees Satin Lipstick (Scarlet Soaked), Stila Beauty Boss Lip Gloss (In the Red), KVD Beauty Everlasting Liquid Lipstick (Santa Sangre); I am also adding some new red lippies to this goal: Glossier Ultralip (Fete), mini Stila Stay All Day Longwear Liquid Lipstick (Beso), GXVE BY GWEN STEFANI Mini Originals Lip Set

- goal: use more

- progress so far: used Glossier Ultralip (Fete) once

20230208_093518-01-01.jpeg

Fragrance

Discovery sets (150 samples) & trial/travel sizes (25)

- goal: try each at least twice

- progress so far: tried 2 travel sprays (including #KAYALI SWEET DIAMOND PINK PEPPER | 25 Travel Spray .34 oz / 10 mL eau de parfum intense spray), 1 rollerball ( SKYLAR Peach Fields Eau de Parfum Rollerball 0.33 oz / 10 mL ) & 1 discovery set sample

Full size EDP (9)

- goal: use each at least once a month

- progress so far: used 1

Misc.

Free samples

- goal: use & finish as many as possible; decide whether to purchase any of them

- progress so far: 6 finished - 1 not pictured here (1 purchased full size, 1 already purchased)

The winners from this batch were Osea Undaria Algae body oil & Farmacy Green Clean Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm . I had never used a body oil before trying this one but ended up really liking it & purchased the full size. As for the cleansing balm, I actually already have & use the full size, so I knew I liked it (it's one of my favorite cleansing balms/first cleansers). I just wanted to use up this sample as part of my ongoing effort to declutter & streamline my inventory as much as possible. I also may end up purchasing the Saturday Skin moisturizer at some point because I liked that one too, but for now I have too many other moisturizers I need to use up.

That's all for now - see you next month! 💜

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

You’re making great progress @caitbird! 👍🏼 I love the mix of products and goals you chose. ♥️ There’s such good variety to keep things flowing through your collection and to take into consideration what is going on with your day-to-day. Super impressed with that TBS body yogurt - it’s not easy to move through a jar of body products and you are on your way to finish. Woohoo! 🙌🏼

btw, that blue shadow looks stunning on you!! 😍

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Agreed; that Hourglass palette is beautiful and the blue shade is strikingly beautiful on you!
