Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Hey all you cool cats and kittens, welcome to YEAR 6 of the Pan It Challenge!

ElleElleG_1-1672620471899.gif

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Past Panning Challenges:

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Small goal met for me. Serum/Oil/Essence category I hit my target of 15.

Look at you go! Small but mighty goal @Samtian! That's awecome you hit your target. Congratulations! 🎉

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi Thank you! It feels so good to hit them, not matter the size of the goal.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Exactly! It's a nice boost to hit a goal. Great job @Samtian!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

That's fantastic!! @Samtian

@lmaster Thank you!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

October 2023 Pan It!

Monthly Summary: One more item finished! Woohoo! 🙌 🎉 Probably the last product from my project pan for the year that will be used up. Everything else going forward will be about chipping away paning goals.

October All Star: This accolade goes to the Ouai Hydrating Scalp Serum this month. I went through it all earlier this month and I have to say, I'm kinda missing it. I picked up a similar product from Act+Acre as a promo gwp and need to put that to the test immediately to see if it will be a good or better replacement for the Ouai, or if I need to pick up another of the Ouai serum before the holiday savings sale ends.

Next Month's Focus: I would like to work on the Westman Atelier lip palette and a couple of shades in the Natasha Denona Biba eyeshadow palette. Both should see some use as I'll be taking them with me on my next work trip.

There it is, all gone! My hair has been missing it.There it is, all gone! My hair has been missing it.

Seeing more pan in that lightest shade! Yes!Seeing more pan in that lightest shade! Yes!

October 2023 Pan - ND.jpg

I converted the buff shade (2nd row, 4th shadow) into a tinted lip balm. Turns out, I can get 3 jars of tinted lip balm out of an eyeshadow - considering including them in next year's project pan ... we shall see.) This palette returns to the rotation; I want to try to use up more of both shadows at the ends of the first row. 🤞

Excited to hear and see how everyone has been doing with the panning project! 😍

@itsfi  awesome progress! That's great that this challenge helped you find a fav product! How long have you been working on that eyeshadow palette again (I know you must have said, but I can't remember - memory like a sieve 😅)? You've made amazing progress with it! I feel like I use eyeshadow a decent amount and I don't have nearly as many palettes as some others here, yet it's hard to picture ever even hitting pan on most of mine. Maybe I should try the tinted lip balm idea - so creative!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Thanks so much @caitbird! I started panning on BIC (and the first time ever) in 2020. This is my 4th year. 2020 & 2021 saw a lot of progress on Biba, in large part because of the Covid lockdown - I did eye makeup everyday with Biba in 2020, it kept me focus on something else. I did my eye makeup with Biba with less consistency as the years have gone by, but have still included it in my project pan. It’s an eye opener 😉 how long it takes to work your way through a pan of shadow, let alone made headway on a palette.

I only used Biba in 2020 and mostly Biba in 2021 (maybe 90 - 95% of my eye looks) - what can I say? I’m a creature of habit 😆 I feel like most folks here rotate through different palettes and shades more often, so it takes longer to hit pan on any one shadow.

@Samtian rotates through different eye shadow palettes and has hit pan on at least 1 shadow in a GXVE quad, more than one overall, I think.

Definitely give the DIY tinted lip balm a try. It’s a great (and functional) way to use up product(s). 👍🏼

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi @caitbird I do! I rotate until I've used every shade I own, with exception to a few colors. I work in hot factory though so I mostly have neutral light colors I use on those days and I've hit pan in the GXVE quad and an Urban Decay palette.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi @Samtian  wow, that kind of focus takes dedication! Now I don't feel so bad that I've never hit pan on an eyeshadow (actually that's not true, I think I did just barely hit pan on one of my Colourpop super shock shadows that I've used a fair amount, but never on a palette shade), I definitely haven't been putting in that kind of concentrated long-term use of the same palette or shades.

I do want to try to be more strategic with using more of my eyeshadow palettes and shades going forward. I feel like considering how many palettes I have (and I just bought a bunch more oops 🙈), I really don't use, or haven't yet used, most of the shades. Part of it is that I don't wear makeup every day, more like 3 or so times a week. I set as one of my project pan goals this year to use every shade in a 30-shade palette at least once, and so far I have managed...not quite half 😓. I want to try and do better with this (making better use of my stash and challenging myself to come up with different looks) next year!

You are both an inspiration to me for sure!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@caitbird It's tough I understand! I've been working on this project for a...few years now...hard to complete it when I, like you, accidently keep ending up with more! I also only use a few, not the work ones, or none a week and it can get disheartening. But I believe some us is better than none! Congrats on the pan! It can be hard when you set it as your goal, because you want to use them all, yet you want to check each shade and give it the attention it deserves 🤣. We are always happy to help and encourage your goals!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Awwww, that's really kind of you so say @caitbird; thank you. If we're talking about inspiration, have you seen your posts? You have put together so many amazing looks of the day!!!

"(and I just bought a bunch more oops 🙈)" ~ that's like a recurring theme on BIC. 😂 I feel like I've definitely become a more strategic and savvy shopper since being on BIC, and particularly since taking part in project pan, whether having my own pan project to work through or watching other people's progress and how they approach it. Some of it, too, is about figuring out what's a good cadence for you when it comes to using a product. The vast majority of my eyeshadows are nude and brown shades so when it came time to pick a what to pan, it was "oh, which one will give me the most options (of nudes and browns, that is 🤣)?" or "what haven't I used that I can start fresh with for a panning project." It's about finding what works for you and what your goals may be. I'm pretty sure I'll probably never try to pan a blush again - oh, that was so painful. 🙄

Excited to see what panning goals you'll work towards next year! You too @Samtian

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi Oh you know I'm already set and ready to go haha. I always start mine around Novemeber/December anyway. Sorry Geroge is blocking the computer screen so I can't go back and fix bad spelling

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi  aw, thank you 😊🥰 I am still trying to focus on doing better with chipping away at more of my 2023 project pan goals for the remainder of the year, but I've already drafted a (possibly too ambitious lol) list of possible goals for 2024, and I'm excited to get started on them!
