Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Hey all you cool cats and kittens, welcome to YEAR 6 of the Pan It Challenge!

ElleElleG_1-1672620471899.gif

**Join us in the 2024 thread available here: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Past Panning Challenges:

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi 😄 thank you!!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

I have been slacking all summer on my panning project!  I finally sat down and took some quick photos last weekend to figure out where I was at on my 10 items.

Start of 2023

I had finished off the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask + Moisturizer 2.25 oz/ 64 g , the Princess perfume, and the MAC Cosmetics Lipglass .  The last two to leave the project were the MAC foundation and MAC concealer, they were duds for my skin and got decluttered in one last "back to mac".  My last update I'd introduced the Mac Lip Oil and the Peter Thomas Roth FIRMx™ Exfoliating Peel Gel and a bottle of Clinique Happy that mayyyyy have been in my stash since.. highschool?  Okay maybe not highschool, but a LONG time ago.

Current Status of the Project...

The PTR mask is being used. It's not a favourite, but I'll use it up probably in the next month or two. The May Coop Raw Sauce is meh. I have other essences that I prefer but I'm determined this will also be done in a month or so. I still have one more unopened... opps. The Vaseline lotion has had next to no use. Once winter really kicks in, I'll likely burn through it quicker. I think I can finish it before years end.The PTR mask is being used. The Origins isn't a favourite formula, but the scent is divine and reminds me of iced tea. With winter coming up I'll be slathering on quite the layers of moisturizers so I should be able to use this up. The Smashbox is older than it should be and I'm horrible at remembering to use a primer so I feel like this will be easier for me to get on quickly in the morning. Since the Fix + is almost done I'll be able to focus on this more as a finishing spray as well. These are the two new products I'm throwing in to replace the two Mac base products I decluttered. Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@missjeanie  I see some awesome progress here, great job!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@caitbird Thanks!!  I was just poking at my panning items this morning and I'm hoping to have two of them finished next week before November!  Turns out leaving them out in a little box makes them easier to remember to use!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@missjeanie Ooh look at that pan! Congrats! Great work so far!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Thanks @Samtian slow and steady!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Dang!!! 🙌 serious progress, excellent job @missjeanie

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@lmaster It's been stop and go through the year, but I'm happy to have some of these empty and out of the house!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Wow @missjeanie! Great work hitting pan on the bronzer - that is no small gray! 👊🏼 You’ve made some serious progress this year on the May Coop Raw Sauce and the MAC Fix+. 🙌🏼 Exciting to see you finish those soon.

About the Origins mask, I used to use that as my in flight ✈️ mask. I’d slather it on and look like a grease pit before we took off but by the time we landed, my skin would be soft, supple & hydrated.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi I love the idea of an in flight mask.... I'm just always too... shy? to try it.  Does anyone give odd looks?  Most of my flights this year have been short ones so I wouldn't be bothered, but something longer than an hour or so, I may have to bite the bullet and try.  I usually imagine a sheet mask, but this may be less obvious and easier for my first time.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

I’ve only used a sheet mask on a plane twice @missjeanie. Both times I lucked out and had the row to myself. Even so, I was still self conscious about it. 🙈

With overnight masks or wash off masks, it’s easier to manage. Sometimes, I’ll even apply the mask before I even board. With a formulation like the Origins mask, it might just look like you have a heavy moisturizer on, after you massage it into your skin. 👍🏼 Another good one for in flight use is Farmacy Honey Savior All-in-One Skin Repair Salve 1.6 oz/ 46 g. 😍

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi I've had that Farmacy Honey Savior All-in-One Skin Repair Salve 1.6 oz/ 46 g on my list!  I tried a sample either late last year or early this year and LOVED it!  Once I work through a few balms/salves I have open I'll be purchasing!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

The Farmacy salve is amazing @missjeanie💛🍯 I used it on a flight to/from Canada. On one trip, one of the flight attendants looked at me funny when I was slathering it on my face after I took my seat but on my way out, she asked about it on my way out because she said my skin looked refreshed. That sealed it for me, and I try to remember to take some with me on longer flights.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi Compliments from strangers means it's THAT good!!!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Right @missjeanie; especially because I had seen her quizzical look when I heaped the balm on my face. 😂 I too would have judged me so no problem there, but my skin completely absorbed all the goodness of the honey salve during the flight. ♥️

Meant to ask earlier, which balm(s) are you currently working your way through?

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@missjeanie  Great job! I use to love the drink it up but I feel like they changed the formula. And I feel like I wasn’t a fan of the new one. Did you ever try the old one?

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@ather Turth.... Can't remember if I tried the older one or not.  I can't even really pin point what it is about this one that I'm not nuts about.  If I'm not close to finished by year end... I may just do an overnight body mask with it lol

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

AUGUST PROJECT PAN UPDATE

Monthly Summary: I hit "pause" on the Natasha Denona Biba Eyeshadow Palette - after hitting pan on Monroe in July and after 4+ years of using it with some consistency, I was looking forward to a break. I was both happy with the break and missing Biba at the same time. 😉 That said, I wasn't super disciplined with my other products in August, but have made some noticeable traction with a couple of my project pan beauties.

August All Star: This title belongs to the Westman Atelier Lip Suede Les Nudes

Needs Some TLC: My hair care pan items are inching their way along - they're definitely in the slow and steady wins the race camp, with the finish line in sight for the JVN Complete Blowout Styling Milk. The Chanel lip liner, on the other hand, fell by the wayside. It just got lost in the mix, but that's easily remedied. I'll curate a small selection of lip liners to rotate through this month and the Chanel liner will most definitely be included in that rotation.

August 2023 Pan - Hair Care.jpg
These hair care goodies have been consistently used, for the most part. Aiming to finish off the JVN Milk by the end of September. 🤞

Just when I thought I would never see pan on the lip palette ... what's that my eyes spy?!!! It's not a bottomless lip palette! Woohoo! 🙌

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi  Your dedication is definitely worth it. You are doing amazing! I can’t get over how well you are doing with your hair care ones. I can’t believe your almost done the JVN milk!! Wow! Great job!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Thanks so much @ather! I feel like I do best using up products when I stick to a routine. I don’t have a lot of similar hair products that are open and used in a rotation, other than shampoo & conditioner, so it’s usually a steady and consistent routine. For me project pan has been really good for not just using up items but also with knowing what works best for me with certain types or categories of products. Lots of lessons learned over these last 3.5+ years. 😀

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi your dedication to panning that Biba palette has been so inspiring!  Watching that reallllly made me curb my palette purchases.  Congratulations on hitting pan in the WA!!
