Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Hey all you cool cats and kittens, welcome to YEAR 6 of the Pan It Challenge!

ElleElleG_1-1672620471899.gif

**Join us in the 2024 thread available here: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Past Panning Challenges:

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@Cissy63, that’s a great way to look at it. 👍🏼 I think my wanting to keep it is more a mix of stubbornness over wanting to finish something that took me soooo long to hit pan in the first place, and guilt (that’s probably not warranted if I think long and hard about it) over tossing something. But you are right, if it’s not something I enjoy wearing I need to let it go. Making note of that, for this & other items.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi -- those are all good options really, but knowing tarte blushers, I think the pearl version will get very messy fast. But it's a good shade for that treatment, not being very dark.  I'd probably either repress it, or grind it to dust and mix with a little tiny bit of face powder so it blend easy and doesn't go on too pigmented. Let us know what happens!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@heavyhedon, you make an excellent point about the possible likely mess!! 🤨 Blush isn’t a must have product for me (hello, easily flushed cheeks all the time!!! 😖) so the mess factor with a loose blush powder is definitely something to consider carefully.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

I reached my first goal today! I used or tossed 12 perfume samplers. That was my goal for that category.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@Samtian Congratulations on reaching your goal

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@Mellmars1185 Thank you!!!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@Samtian  Congratulations 🤩. It must feel good to reach one of your goals!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@Cissy63 Thank you, it definitely does!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Very cool, @Samtian January Achievement: unlocked!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@heavyhedon Haha yes!! Thank you!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Excellent job!! 🙌 @Samtian

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@lmaster Thank you!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Wow! Awesome work @Samtian! Congrats on meeting your goal! 🙌🏼 Did you find any favorites or scents you really like among the ones you used?

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi i really liked HERMÈS Le Jardin de Monsieur Li Eau de Toilette and BURBERRY My Burberry  I really don't remember which other ones they were. I think I'll start keeping a full list of everything I've used, normally I delete it after I post in the empties. I do keep a list of all my scents and if I like them or not, but not when I've tested or used them.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@Samtian -- I have little samples of both of those and they are so pretty.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@heavyhedon They are! I'm glad you like them as well.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Woo hoo @Samtian Way to go! 12 samples cleared out is a good accomplishment 👏 👌

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@CynthieLu Thank you! Last year I only did 18, so this is really good for me!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@Samtian Yes girl! The year just started and your out of the gate running! 🏃‍♀️

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

So glad I found this thread! I think this is such a great idea to make using/using up products more fun, and super useful to help with setting specific goals and tracking progress! I've never done this challenge before, but I'm very excited to participate 😁

I tried to choose a range of different products in different categories, and a range of different goals. I might have been too ambitious 😅 but we'll see how I do! Here are my items for this year's challenge, & my goals for each:

Skincare:

20230114_180708-01.jpeg

1. Selfless by Hyram Centella & Green Tea Daily Gel Cleanser . This cleanser is fine, but to be honest I find it a bit boring. I have others that I like better, so I'd like to finish this one up.

- goal: finish

- starting status: nearly full

- timeframe for goal: 12 months

2. LANEIGE Cream Skin Toner & Moisturizer 5.0 oz/ 150 mL . I like this toner (I like milky toners in general), but I am trying to phase out non-cruelty-free products from my collection so I'd like to use this one up.

- goal: finish

- starting status: about half full

- timeframe for goal: 12 months

3. COSRX Hydrium Watery Toner . I like this toner fine, but there are others I have that I prefer, so I've already decided not to repurchase. I'd like to finish this up and move on to other toners.

- goal: finish

- starting status: about half full

- timeframe for goal: 12 months

20230115_112329.jpg

4. Glow Recipe Fruit Babies Bestsellers Kit . I just got this set and like all of them so far. I'd like to use them up before they expire, and decide which ones I will repurchase in the full size.

- goal: finish all; decide which to repurchase

- starting status: nearly full (just started using)

- timeframe for goal: 6 months (the soonest expiration date)

20230115_125757-01.jpeg

5. Bubble Skincare Come Clean Clay Mask . I like this clay mask okay, but it is a little thinner in consistency than I think I prefer. I have other clay masks I want to try, but I'd like to finish this one first.

- goal: finish

- starting status: about 3/4 full? (it is a little hard to tell)

- timeframe for goal: 12 months

20230115_125836-01.jpeg

6. The Body Shop Strawberry Body Yogurt . I don't care for this product all that much; the consistency is fine, but I find the strawberry scent to be unpleasantly artificial. I will use it up because I hate to waste, but I wouldn't repurchase. I just want to finish it and be done with it.

- goal: finish

- starting status: about half full (I think)

- timeframe for goal: 12 months

Makeup:

20230115_130239-01.jpeg

1. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit Unlocked Face Palette Butterfly . This palette is so pretty, but I don't use it very often. I'd like to try to use it more regularly (aiming for weekly), partly to justify how expensive it was 😅

- goal: use at least once a week

- starting status: nearly new (only used a few times)

-timeframe for goal: 12 months (then reevaluate)

20230115_130131-01.jpeg

2. Hourglass Veil™ Translucent Setting Powder - Talc Free Translucent . I bought this during Sephora's holiday sale because I wanted to try a setting powder, but so far I've hardly used it. My initial impression was that I'm not sure I like it, and I'm not sure I like face powders in general. I'd like to play around with it some more & give it a fair chance before I really decide whether or not I like it and want to use it regularly.

- goal: use & experiment with more; decide whether I like it or not

- starting status: nearly full (only used a few times)

- timeframe for goal: 6 months, then reevaluate

20230115_132836-01.jpeg

3. Glossier Stretch Concealer (G12). This is my favorite concealer at the moment - I like the natural, skin-like finish it gives, and that it's light enough to look natural on my very fair skin, yet doesn't make me look pasty. I am going to ambitiously set the goal of hitting pan on this one by year's end.

- goal: hit pan

- starting status: at least 3/4 full

- timeframe for goal: 12 months

20230114_215303-01.jpeg

4. Juvia's Place Wahala II Eyeshadow Palette . I bought this on a whim recently because I thought the colors were beautiful (I love jewel tones, and cool colors especially), even though I don't use eyeshadow palettes that often. Part of the reason I don't buy or use full size eyeshadow palettes very much is that I rarely can find one where I like every shade. I want to challenge myself to use every shade in this palette at least once.

- goal: use every shade at least once

- starting status: new (haven't used yet)

- timeframe for goal: 12 months

20230115_130050-01.jpeg

5. Flower Beauty Blush Bomb Color Drops (Bubbly) . This was my ride or die blush for a while, but I've since found others that I now prefer a bit more. I still like this one and would like to try to use it up this year.

- goal: finish

- starting status: I honestly have no idea how much is left 😅

- timeframe for goal: 12 months

20230115_125953-01.jpeg

6. Red lippies: Stila Beauty Boss Lip Gloss (In the Red), KVD Beauty Everlasting Longwear Liquid Lipstick Santa Sangre , Burt's Bees Satin Lipstick (Scarlet Soaked). I rarely wear red lippies even though I always admire them on others - I am more likely to stick with a nice safe tinted lip balm. This year I want to try to venture out of my comfort zone a bit more by trying a bold red lip more often!

- goal: use & experiment with more

- starting status: nearly new/new/nearly new

- timeframe for goal: 12 months

Fragrance:

20230114_180539-01.jpeg

1. All my discovery set samples & trial/ travel size fragrances, including but not limited to Boy Smells Fragrance Discovery Set  PHLUR Discovery Sampler Set  Commodity Exploration Set  Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume Sampler Set  CLEAN RESERVE Reserve - Perfume Discovery Set  The 7 Virtues Peace Perfume Discovery Set  Maison Louis Marie Discovery Oil Sampler Set  NEST New York Mini Fragrance Discovery Set eau de parfum set  By Rosie Jane Fragrance Discovery Set  DedCool Discovery Set  Ellis Brooklyn Scent DIARY Fragrance Discovery Set perfume set KAYALI SWEET DIAMOND PINK PEPPER | 25 Travel Spray .34 oz / 10 mL eau de parfum intense spray  NEST New York Turkish Rose Perfume Oil Rollerball 0.20 oz / 6 mL  OUAI Mini North Bondi Eau De Parfum 0.34 fl oz/ 10 mL  SKYLAR Honeysuckle Dream Eau de Parfum Travel Spray .33 oz / 10 mL Eau de Parfum Spray  SKYLAR Peach Fields Eau de Parfum Rollerball 0.33 oz / 10 mL  SKYLAR Sun Shower Eau De Parfum Rollerball 0.33 oz/ 10 mL  I have amassed quite the collection by now (I might be a little obsessed - this drawer isn't even all of my travel sprays and rollerballs 😅), and my ultimate goal is to try each at least twice (I find that I can have a different second impression of a fragrance compared to my first wear test, so I try to always give everything at least a second chance,  even if I didn't like it the first time). This goal is going to carry over into next year, because in combination with my next goal there aren't enough days in the year for all of them!

- goal: try each at least twice; decide whether to purchase any in the full size

- starting status: 150 discovery set samples (8 already tried 2x), 25 trial/travel size (2 already tried 2x)

- timeframe for goal: 16 months (reevaluate at 6 & 12 months)

20230115_133349-01.jpeg

2. All of my full size EDP . Here is my little collection of full size fragrances (so far!), including NEST New York Indigo Eau de Parfum 1.7 oz/ 50 mL  NEST New York Wild Poppy Eau de Parfum  Floral Street Sunflower Pop Eau De Parfum 1.7 oz/ 50 mL  By Rosie Jane Rosie Eau de Parfum 1.7 oz/ 50 mL . I haven't actually used them much so far because I've been focused on trying out new scents (see above), but I'd like to set aside some days to wear the ones I already know I like (most of these I got after I tried & liked the sample/travel size, though a couple were blind buys).

- goal: use each at least once a month

- starting status: 9 full size EDP

- timeframe for goal: 12 months, then reevaluate

My more general goals for my beauty collection this year include: using & finishing as many free samples as possible, and deciding whether to purchase any of them; using & finishing as many mini products as possible, and deciding whether to purchase any in the full size; trying all my new products I haven't tried yet; and using & using up as many products as possible before they expire.

So this should keep me busy for a while!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@caitbird  You have an impressive goal.  I’m always looking for a new concealer, glad you like it.
